The Brilliance of Team Rocket in Kanto
Video Overview & Insights
Welcome to the first episode of my series on the many evil teams of Pokémon! Each episode will serve as a deep dive and a retrospective on each of the respective villainous teams of the Pokemon video games. In this episode, we take a look at the team that started it all: Team Rocket.

Chapters:
I wouldn't say Rocket only wants money... Giovanni is at least wanting control of Kanto... Eventually adding Johto. I'd throw in the Mewtwo stuff, but some people try to discard that canon.

0:40 What is a Villainous Team?
Team Rocket for me would have gone in C-Tier. Not so much A Tier.
1:19 Rating and Ranking the Teams
4:16 Team Rocket, The Blueprint
what I would have done was change Giovanni's first and second evil teams in his first 2 battles. Keep his gym battle the same but have him have a Gengar for the whole Silph Scope thing (because how the hell does he not have a Gengar despite all the effort of stealing a Silph Scope. ) along with an Alakazam, Hypno, maybe a ground type like Rhydon, and then Kangaskan. a 4th battle should have featured Giovanni with 6 pokemon and Mewtwo being his last pokemon before he disappears for the end of FR/LG

I wish you didn't know that Giovanni was the leader of Team Rocket and it was one of those (you would get an understanding of who he is, and then Honestly, his last battle being a gym battle was kind of lackluster. I wish you fought him at the league and he had Mewtwo with him. This would have helped out in teasing Mewtwo with Giovanni (which if you didn't explore the abandoned Pokemon Mansion in Cinabar island.) heck, you wouldn't know about Mewtwo except for probably the anime where they actually point blank show you Mewtwo in his armor form briefly when Gary battle Giovanni. also.... this is more or less an insult to Fire Red/LeafGreen and the Let's go games, but for Giovanni to not even have a unique boss theme for his battles. Even his final battle. there isn't much else to say about Giovanni than Game Counterpart Giovanni is super weak, while the Anime and Manga do him far more justice.
25:11 Villainy Rating
26:40 Plot Rating
I think Team Rocket is the second weakest pokemon Team, only in front of Team Yell but behind Team Star. in the games, the team is one of the weakest
What makes Team Rocket Stand out is the iconic trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth in the anime, and How threatening they are in the Manga series, where their admins are actually 3 of the Kanto Gym Leaders, Lt. Surge, Sabrina, and Koga (all 3 terrifying gym leaders that actually would fit very well as Rocket Admins in their own right.

Have you heard of the Rocket Edition (Pokémon Emerald) rom hack? It touches on some of the origins!

Let me know in the comments whether you would like me to branch out into other Pokémon-related content as well, such as hardcore nuzlockes, rom hacks, spinoffs, etc.
I wanna see how you handle Team Star
More User Perspectives
I wouldn't call Giovanni being a Gym Leader the only plot twist in Pokemon. Especially not since Volo and the AI Professors exist.
@MissRoraPaul does say, in 1 Timothy, that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Not that money itself is the root of evil. Other than that, I do love you putting the Bible lesson in there, and the video itself was quite good!
@MayBeSomethingA whole video about Team Rocket in the Kanto games without ANY Jessie, James, and Meowth references? You have done the seemingly impossible, good sir!
@incrediblefunk7220Team Rocket and their grunts specifically are based off yhe SHOCKER grunts from Kamen Rider
@bramzwingliI don't think the Elite Four had any association with Giovanni. The Gym guide at the gym was also unaware of the Gym Leader's identity, so that shows that the Pokémon League wasn't aware that one of the Gym Leaders was a crime boss.
And no, Giovanni did not have a change of heart. He just realized he wasn't strong enough in his current state and decided to better himself as a Trainer before doing anything else.
Giving away a nugget is more like giving away $50, since Poké is probably more similar to Yen. There's also a quote that says something to the effect of "It's like how every 100 Poké is made up of several smaller Poké," implying Poké is measured out in 100 Poké bank notes, like our $1 bill or the British Pound.
@Charmaster04Great video! I think if your focus is on the team as a whole, you missed a lot by ignoring Yellow and Let's Go. Jessie and James are a great addition as the main grunts, and Let's Go actually includes Archer as Giovanni's right hand man.
There's also a lot of evil team content in Pokemon Masters, though admittedly that's a secondary canon. Team Rocket really shines in that game where Giovanni learns the ultimate power of Evil Friendship.
currency in pokemon is based on japanese yen, and 1 yen is approximately $0.01, so the nugget is only worth around 50 dollars, which is a far more reasonable bribe for new recruits.
@zerosugargrapesodaBefore we begin, remember all Pokémon exist for the glory of Team Rocket.
@jrk1984I think we can safely say the male and female admins at Sevii Islands are Archer and Ariana (or atleast Archer). Their teams are similar to their GSC/HGSS teams and what male admin says is pretty much the same to what Archer says in Lets Go post game.
@ExecutiveSondaTeam rocket is based in Yakuza not Italian mafia…😊
@petersfmTeam Rocket isn't really a villain of the story or an antagonist. They are bad guys who happen to cross paths with the players. Your goal in the game isn't to fight evil. Its to catch and train pokemon. It is your rival who is more an antagonist though not really a villain. If anything they are the evil in the story because your rival, though conceited, isn't really evil and so they help fill that missing hole.
@AndrewTheFrank8:47 Pokémon gangsters is crazy. We need a ROM hack where Team Rocket act like west coast gangbangers
@roscoedash6673I would say that the true villain of Legends Arceus is just as good of a plot twist
@Spark-GoldPlay the rocket edition game, it just fills in so many gaps
@samwinwood218Giovanni's team was actually pretty good, for gen 1.
Not the way he used them, but as a team, they were oretty solid.
Fun fact:
Cerulean cave is part of Mt Moon.
Top class video, you deserve 10's of thousand of subs subs of notorr
@VallgorAs someone who is part of pret that works on Pokémon game source codes too there are hints in the game Rockets did a lot more stuff. For example, in the original RG in some of the beta stuff its heavily implied the rockets are the reason the safari zone warden is missing his teeth and a whole host of other things here and there. Why this got cut I have no idea as I feel having the rockets being a looming threat even more so would get the point across, they are a threat. The rockets in RGBY are fine enough as is but wish there was a bit more.
@idkaname1085Fantastic job brother great editing and awesome content overall keep it up 🫡
@Emiel88Team Rocket as a whole might want money, but Giovanni wants more than that: he actually does want world domination. That's why he's the Ground-type Gym Leader and why his badge is the Earth Badge. But he has something the other evil team leaders don't: he's a grounded realist. Most of the others are idealists who are out of touch with what the world is. They rush off to change it to what they think is better, only to ruin it and lose in the process. Not Giovanni. And what makes the world great? The Pokemon. Control them, or the strongest of them, and you control the world. Giving credit where credit is due, Ghetsis also had an idea of this, hence his goal of divorcing people and Pokemon.
@clarkside4493Love the foreshadowing 😂 to Johto 👍 good job game freak
@quancarlos934Your BYU shirt reminds me of how I think they got the colors backwards. When I think of Provo (and Utah in general) I think red. BYU-Hawaii's color was red. Which is wrong because Hawaii is very blue and green. I would know, I lived there. Well, I lived in both places but I'm only ashamed to have lived in one.
@felman87Bring back criminal baddies and asshole rivals 📢
@CharseptImmediately subbed after you dropped the Bible verse. Great content.
@yung-MNWOnly point I have here is a technicality. Kanto is based off a region in Japan. Team Rocket is the Yakuza, not Italian Mafia.
@agentotterWith mentioning Malva in the E4. It made me realize they haven't done an evil team champion yet. I think that would be an interesting story element
@consumer1184Dog great video! Glad you were able to finally get started can't wait for more! Doesn't matter that it was a year later than promised but I am here for it!
@OrdiMan28Team Rocket is peak
@Aday011914:44 Idk… I hear Mr Fuji has a shady past. May just be catching up to him.
@OrphoidYakuza.
...they're the Yakuza.
Team Rocket did not keep Mr. Fuji hostage, he was there of his own volition
@ashleyvanbeek7045This vid was so sick I was shocked at the sub count. I’m here to stay!
@Matty2Saintsreally excited for the rest of the series!! good start
@nemuii303028:38 that was done fine it was just going for something different
Malva was retired for awhile so it wasn’t the same situation as Giovanni
Not me looking for the next in the series when everything is fresh off the press 😭
But seriously, I loved this entire thing and I'm keeping an eye out for sure
