The BIZARRE World of Jurassic Park Toys

Video Overview & Insights

With Jurassic World Rebirth on the horizon, dumbjake takes a look at Jurassic Park & some Jurassic World toys by Kenner, Hasbro, and Mattel.

Hey all, Universal claimed some clips in this video, so I had to cut them out. I don't think the video is too badly messed up, the toy info is mostly intact, but you can watch the original version of the video on my patreon, it's available for free members so you don't have to pay anything. Apologies for the inconvenience: https://www.patreon.com/c/dumbjak

I had WAY too many JP3 toys. I had the JP1 young t-rex too and want to kick myself for getting rid of it.

What a shame to mention the bizarre Nedry figure without mentioning his play feature-- literally ripping his arms off. So weirdly violent for a kids' toy. I mean I had plenty of aliens and robots that exploded or got dismembered. Weird to see it happen to a human figure, though.

1:27-13:58 Jurassic Park (1993) by Kenner

13:58-21:05 The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) by Kenner

I was hoping they'd be covered here, but I had a pair of toys styles like the spino animatronic that I've been trying for a while. It was a rex and a dilophosaurus that I had in the early 2000's (no later than '04). They had the rubber skin, but all they did was react to motion (or maybe with a button), start growling and moving their head in a circle, then they'd do a roar. The dilo's frill would jump forward and it honestly sort of scared me.

I wish I still had them, but the frills on the dilo were so thin they broke fairly quickly with how often I played with them, and the skin and motorized parts in general just didn't last long. Hoping you cover them in a later video, they were amazing! 💖

21:05-28:00 Jurassic Park: Chaos Effect (1998) by Kenner

28:00-36:39 Jurassic Park 3 (2001) by Hasbro

Its worth acknowledging that the Chaos effect toys bear a strong resemblance to the PRIMAL RAGE toyline by Playmates you could often mistake the toys as being part of the same line

It puzzles me how you acknowledge Dimetrodon as not being a dinosaur, but consistently refer to pterosaurs (such as pteranodon) as “flying dinosaurs,” when they aren’t. They’re pterosaurs.

Unrelated to the video, but things such as mosasaurus, plesiosaurus, ichthyosaurus, etc. were not dinosaurs, either.

It’s quite a shame realize that I don’t collect those toys anymore. I kind of moved on.

@tyrannotherium7873
@

I remember the old days I used to get some Jurassic Park three toys I know that in 2010 I got the Thrasher t Rex with my six grade money the original version and then on Christmas day I got the 97 ball tea Rex before that I also got the 2009/10 bull T-Rex the orange one and it looks super dope

32:00, had that exact same Triceratops when i was a kid. Named him Chomp. He was my buddy back when i was four.

Sadly, hes not in the best shape anymore

7:33 i totally agree with you

I never understood why they made the “battle-damaged” dinosaur toys look so disturbing. I loved the toys growing up and had a few myself, but I’m kinda glad they phased that out because, let’s be real, it just looked gross.

I used to have the Thrasher T-Rex and the Chaos Theory variant. Those were awesome.

"Dino-Dammage" is such a dark concept for a kids toyline.

@ArchieSonicFan-k5t
@

4:52 Oh hey I still have that Dilophosaurus!
Edit to nitpick: Pteranodon is also not a true dinosaur.
8:01 Oh hey I still have that T.rex; poor things tail was always bent and her arm pegs broke.
9:28 And I still have the Bracho and Tim, must have immediately lost the Night Vision Goggles and I don't know what became of the snare...
Edit to add: Yeah, Spinosaurus was literally pushed as "BIGGER AND BADDER" by Jack Horner, who like a lot of Paleontologist suffers from T. rex fatigue, and was behind such slander as insisting T. rex was a pure scavenger.

Dinosaurs 🦕 are actually Dragons 🐉

Dinosaurs got a new scientific name in the 1800s.
Longer (but still fun) version 🦴🐉:
Before the 19th century, people didn’t have a scientific framework for prehistoric reptiles. When large fossil bones turned up, they were often explained as:
dragons
giants
biblical monsters
or legendary beasts
In medieval Europe, “dragon” was a common catch-all for anything big, reptilian, and mysterious. In China, fossils were literally called “dragon bones.”
In 1842, British anatomist Sir Richard Owen officially coined the term “Dinosauria”, meaning “terrible lizards.”
This is the key moment. From then on, these creatures were:
classified scientifically
separated from myth
studied as extinct animals rather than legendary monsters
After 1842, as paleontology grew:
“Dragon” stayed in the realm of myth and folklore
“Dinosaur” became the scientific category for real prehistoric animals
Why dragons and dinosaurs feel connected
Early dinosaur reconstructions looked:
huge
reptilian
tail-dragging
sometimes winged or spiky
So culturally, dinosaurs felt like dragons with the magic removed — which is why the transition feels like a “name change,” even though it was really a shift from mythology to science.
If you want, I can also tell you:
which specific fossils inspired dragon myths
why dragons exist in so many cultures
or how dinosaurs still influence modern dragon designs

The Kenner Star Wars toys are great. Probably one of the largest collections of figures from one series I have not counting Lego figures is my Kenner Star Wars figures. Some were even my moms she got back in the day when the movie was new.

God I wish and hope that they bring back those hybrid monsters I mean look at the ones on Rebirth they got Velociverns ( Wyverns+Velociraptor ) and a mutated T. Rex if they ever make a full on dragon looking hybrid then I will be blessed

WHY ARE YOU CALLIN MAH BOY PTERNADON A DINO!! ITS A FLYING REPTILE.... RAAAAAAAAH!!

@ILOVEDINOS-n4y
@

I had to impulse buy the Juv T-Rex from the 93 collection because it looked so similar to the recolor juv T-Rex from the 2nd line of the original movie.

I had that original one as a kid, but it got lost somewhere. And I couldn't pass up such a big hit to nostalgia. 50 bucks though? Jesus.

--------

I'm kinda bummed out (just slightly) that you glossed over the biggest play feature with the original Nedry toy. His ARMS RIP OFF!!!

Look for the JP mark!

@Endocrom

I've hesitated collecting the new JP dinos for a long while because my nostalgia for the old Kenner line is too strong. I still have most of my old JP toys, and I was so over the moon at my mom getting me the giant Bull T-Rex, my absolute favorite dino toy ever.
