The 7 Levels of Psychopaths

Video Overview & Insights

Inspired by "The seven levels of..." videos, today we will be analysing the seven levels of Movie Psychopaths. This will be a film video essay critiquing the least accurate portrayals of psychos in movies to the most accurate portrayal of psychopaths in cinema.

This is a bit more of a sciency/nerdy video channeling my love for psychology.

The info I presented is based off the study by Dr. Samuel Leistedt’s paper “Psychopathy and the Cinema: Fact or Fiction?”

Do let me know if you enjoy this style and what other psychopaths did I miss?

Genuinely asking, is Bond really a psycho? I mean, I understand he kills and manipulate but precisely because of the context in which he operates (governmental/national security) I´m not sure if he can be categorized as one. He is by no means a pure soul but I´m just wondering if he really belongs here. I´m no expert but I´d say he belongs in the sociopath category.

There are no "clinically perfect" Psychopaths since the term is not clinical.

In the medical profession "Psychopath" and "Sociopath" are not diagnostic terms, they all fall under ASPD (Anti-Social Personality Disorder)

I would put Lalo Salamanca very high on this list. He's highly intelligent, a master of interpersonal relationships, extremely cunning and patient, and would just as soon kill you as he would take the trash out. There is just something about his character, but every time he's on screen, it is absolutely terrifying.

I'm curious to ask, but sorry if that's rude of me to mention my own creations. The character I've used the most is Kylie Wade, a mercenary who is definitely willing to kill and doesn't feel particularly guilty about it, but also extremely protective of her family, and unless specifically hired to ice someone, will usually verbally issue a warning before her madness takes hold.
I would guess tier 1 ?

The vast majority of psychopaths are not violent and don't commit crimes. Most, like everyone else, they don't want to go to jail or prison, so they don't do things that could land them there. Instead, they take on jobs or roles where their psychopathic traits make them more successful. The jobs that hold the most psychopaths are typically ones that require a lack of empathy or the ability to manipulate others. Think corporate CEOs, politicians, lawyers, stuff like that.

Most psychopaths are low functioning and have below average IQ. However, this could be because most studies are done on people already in the criminal justice system and usually in prison, meaning they are the most violent or just not smart enough to hide their ill-intent, so most likely to get caught. The smarter a psychopath is, the harder it is to identify their disorder.

The psychopath stare is a Hollywood trope, more likely to be found in schizophrenics or people with PTSD. Psychopaths do communicate with their eyes, and can use them to manipulate, although low-functioning psychopaths may react inappropriately with their eyes as they aren't smart enough to mask their emotions. Crocodile tears or the 'crocodile smile' (aka narcissist smile) may be present when dealing with high functioning psychopaths who haven't quite mastered the manipulation (e.g. Elizabeth Holmes), but generally psychopaths have normal eyes. However, because psychopaths don't feel fear or anxiety when confronted with unpleasant or traumatic images, there pupils don't dilate with the fight or flight instinct so there is some degree of truth to the concept of the psychopath stare but only insofar as the eyes look calm when they should look shocked. Eyes that look through you are a sign of cognitive dissociation, not lack of empathy. The confusion comes from the fact that in severe psychotic episodes (not psycopathic), a Schizophrenic may have a crazed look in their eyes when they violently attack someone, but Schizophrenics are by definition not psychopaths as they are suffering a mental illness/psychosis, whereas psychopaths suffer a personality disorder/neurosis and are fully aware of the actions they are taking, even if responding through anger and impulse. The same is true for people who commit violence during drug psychosis.

Norman Bates is either Schizophrenic or has Dissociative Identity Disorder (i.e. psychotic) rather than being psychopathic, so he may not be a good representation of a psychopath but he was never intended to be. The problem is that the public use the term psycho to refer to both violent psychopaths and people who commit violent acts due to being psychotic. Someone who is psychotic may harm individuals (though usually they are non-violent), but a psychopath is capable of harming millions if put in positions of power. Norman Bates is a sensationalised though not unrealistic example of the former, whereas Walter White or Frank Underwood/Francis Urquhart are good examples of the latter.

Hannibal Lecter would probably be diagnosed as having Antisocial Personality Disorder (i.e. sociopathy) with Machiavellian, grandoise and Sadistic traits, though some clinicians don't distinguish between psychopathy and sociopathy. His hyperfocus, gifted verbal intelligence and unusual interest in eating people suggests autism, with his charm and faux extroversion suggesting the autism is co-morbid with ADHD. It's a rare combination which is why it's hard to think of realistic parallels from recent history (although figures like Hitler or Stalin do fit the mold somewhat and probably helped create the media archetype of the intellectual, high functioning psycopath in the late 20th century).

What separates the likes of Hitler and fictional figures like Hannibal Lecter and Dexter from a diagnosis of being psycopathic is that they are capable of feeling compartmentalised though genuine human empathy and affection, which is why autism and Anti-Social Personality Disorder are a better fit. Hitler, for example, seemed to have a genuine love of dogs, whereas a psychopath may have a casual affinity for dogs but if left alone with a dog is more likely to kick it than pet it. Psychopaths typically have an IQ in the 90-95 range meaning they would be unlikely to be able to attend college, whereas people with neurological conditions like ADHD and autism cluster as above or below average intelligence, with most people considered geniuses (e.g. da Vinci, Aristotle, Einstein, Churchill) demonstrating ADHD or austistic traits as well as being able to compartmentalise empathy and having unstable romantic relationships and friendship groups.

Bit of interesting trivia is that Bardem ended up being a bit traumatized by allowing his mindset to go down the path of a true psychopath that he had to take several months to recover and wound up doing a cheesy rom com as his next project specifically as a 'palette cleanser'. Ralph Fiennes portrayal of Amon Goethe ended up being so accurate that he actually triggered PTSD in a number of actual holocaust survivors. I would've also like to have seen where Antony Starr's portrayal of Homelander would've fallen on this list. And, damn you, now I can't see James Bond the same way ever again.

Ive met a few people that I would strongly consider to be psychopaths and they are all usually dumb as a box of hammers but like to hurt people for zero reason other than it makes them feel good. The highly intellectual cunning psychopath is not real. Even the most infamous ones are usually smart but have dog shit interpersonal skills which is why they have to play tricks on people to get them to fall into theyre trap to be murdered or swindled.

Psychopath is a term no longer used or diagnosed in this manner. Antisocial personality disorder is the recognized term. this stuff is useful for literary analysis and inspiration, but bears no resemblance to what is currently taught to psychology majors.
