The 5 levels of arthouse movies
W list and W edit, great work but a W thought is to realise there are no tier lists, they're all just stories a person tells from his subjective perspective.
Movies mentioned in this video:
Parasite (2019)
Interesting concept. My level 5 would be something like: Inland Empire, Bu San, Hausu, Holy Motors, Pacifiction, Amer, Ayneh, The Color of Pomegranates, Memoria.
Challengers is a tricky one because it really does have a "blockbuster" feeling but that's just a facade. It's waaaay more artsy with cinematography than something like Requiem for a Dream. It's also one of the best psychological movies I've seen. Having a love triangle as a plot element doesn't make a story "cheesy" by default.
Burning (2018)
Arrival (2016)
I really really loved Greener Grass. I’ve only seen it once but I watched it straight through and was into it the whole time. I had no clue what it was and just put it on because it was on Mubi.
Anora (2024)
Uncut Gems (2019)
Luis Buñuel, John Cassavettes,, Pasolini, Fellini, Jodorowsky, Greenaway, Paranajov, Svankmajer, Buttgereit…
Challengers (2024)
Annihilation (2018)
Level 1: Kubrick
Level 2: Kubrick
Level 3: Kubrick
Level 4: Kubrick
Level 5: Random 1970s Polish or Russian auteur director’s passion project.
His opinion about Possession was right until he said he liked it.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
I wonder if The Holy Mountain count as a Arthouse Movie?
The Battle of Algiers (1966)
Bicycle Thieves (1948)
I love how 2 of the categories in thumbnail are just Kubrick films
The 400 Blows (1959)
Beau Travail (1999)
Зелёный слоник
Blue Velvet (1986)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Lars Von Trier movies, Dancer in the Dark (with Bjork), Eraserhead, Salto (Polish), 8.5, Enter the Void...
Angel's Egg (1985)
Persona (1966)
My cracked head started with 6:48 david lynch filmography eraserhead yeah 😅😅😅😅 but that shit is crazy
All That Jazz (1979)
Climax (2018)
MONONOKE. Not princess Mononoke. Just, MONONOKE. S Tier if you're into japanese shamanism like me.
Possession (1981)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
The card style ranking and effects are legit my guy. Do more. I've seen most of those and the effects are accurate.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Videodrome (1983)
Eternal Sunshine, Donnie Darko, and Being John Malkovich were three great Level 1/2's from the 2000 era. Maybe even Stranger Than Fiction gets a nod in there.
House (1977)
Suspiria (1977)
Beau is afraid must be somewhere on the list surely
Sanctuary (2022)
Greener Grass (2019)
4:21 i have adhd but somehow sat through this entire movie with my attention unbroken, which is probably why i hold it to such a high degree
More User Perspectives
Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders is perfect as pure arthouse level entry.
@cnoeromanHate to be that guy but the Barry Lyndon aesthetic is actually not renaissance at all. It is very much inspired by the Rococo painting style tho
@MrRavan218bro forgot to mention Delicatessen and the city of lost children or any of jean pierre jeunet's movies
@swaglazio43annihilation is trash and putting it in the same sentence as Stalker is a fucking travesty
@romic8427Foreign language movies
MUBI movies.
High level Film connoisseur stuff
Level 6: Jodorowsky
@trashyaqua6239Level 5; But I'm a Cheerleader
@BrockBarrNo Jodorowsky? Disappointing.
@feeshpilledyou forgot jack and jill
@spoogleh9813This video is so Tubi coded. But fr recommend pink flamingos and Czechoslovakian new wave films like daisies
@user-re3jx7eg5tNo a brighter summer day is crazy
@AeltrunThe holy mountain
@Pork_RoadkillMad god
@Pork_RoadkillEl topo
@Pork_Roadkillthanks for the recs man! will def watch greener grass, all that jazz and bicycle thieves (haven't seen these)
@quakuaqThanks for mentioning Angel's Egg. What a movie.
@methanolfortheblindTop 4:
1. Blade runner 1982 Final Cut
2. LOTR Fellowship of the ring
3. The Shining
4. Oldboy (korean one ofc)
Oh and merry Christmas
I mean if you take the colors away from Suspiria…the hype wouldn’t be there
@LeahDadai think you forgot about the Jurassic park
@paresh6166I think the only tier I truly consider Arthouse in this vid, are the classics. Everything else is too crossover prone, dovetailing into genre cinema and Mainstream and such. There are at least 3 tiers missing: Auteur cinema (worldwide but especially Europe), Slow Cinema (like reeeally slow, not like "Burning" or "2001" but even half their pace - Lav Diaz, Bela Tarr, Apichatpong Weerasethakul) and finally, experimental cinema (try: Movies that are shown at Berlin International Filmfestival in its Forum, especially Forum Expanded section). I think the last two tiers I mentioned are the very highest tiers of them all. Friend of mine sat through an 8-hour screening of a Lav Diaz filme once in Berlin, absolutely crazy, and the screening was sold out.
@EldenRinging"Requiem for a Dream" did traumatize me... as a 15 year old, ngl.
@EldenRinging"Climax" is Gaspar Noe on easy mode.
@EldenRinging"The Lighthouse" Tier 3? I think "2001" is more deserving of Tier 3. I fucky my brain as well 😂
@EldenRinging"Uncut Gems" is great, but it's highly stressful and unnerving, maybe even to the point of annoying. So I get the controversy.
@EldenRingingthx 4 "Arrival" 🙏
@EldenRingingI have watched greener grass twice! I think it just needs to be approached from the mindset of this is an abstract comedy with elements of Todd Solondz and honestly Lynch if he was real silly and it will be a lot more enjoyable
@dialecticalmagicI sat through all of Greener Grass. It’s an extended 12:50am SNL skit trying to be Blue Velvet undermined by surreal goofiness not elevated by it like House.
@cujomillerYESSSS mate love the love for Uncut Gems!! Can't BELIEVE it's got 52 percent on rotten tomatoes!!!
@hessflixLevel 4: Russian masterpiece by German "It's hard to be a god". A unique experience.
@usun_politics1033I get his calling all those movies over-the-top acting-wise, but come on, Isabelle Adjani in Possession? That's some crazy daring all-time shit that ranks as one of the most impressive female screen performances
@ShadyCopernicusThe Holy Mountain definitely should have featured
@nilanc1670Love inland empire soooo much
@SalemzSinzBelladonna of Sadness - Level 4
@rileyray3699Level 6 - The Room
@diginyan8:20 Even if you're not a musical person —ok chat i gotta ask. is there something like a non musical person?
