Planning first time Porto Portugal trip? One thing that catches first-timers off guard: Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia are technically two different municipalities. The port wine lodges you see across the river — Sandeman, Taylor's, Graham's — are all in Gaia, not Porto. When locals say "Porto" they mean the city on the north bank.
São Bento train station is worth visiting even if you're not catching a train. The azulejo tile panels inside depict Portuguese history and took 11 years to complete (over 20,000 blue and white tiles). It's genuinely one of the most impressive train station interiors in Europe and entry is free.
For food: avoid sitting down at restaurants right on the Cais da Ribeira waterfront. Tourist pricing. Walk one or two streets back into Miragaia or the Bonfim neighbourhood and the quality goes up and prices come down. The best francesinha in the city is never on the main tourist strip.

We’re in Porto now and as beautiful as it may be, It’s dirty,over crowded,full of beggars,people trying to sell you drugs,it has a massive homeless problem and parts of Vila Nova de Gaia are pretty unwelcoming.Big migrant problem and in the evenings away from the river you’d think you were in Delhi…to be honest if you want to eat anywhere other than by the side of a main road stick to the river,where you’ll be able to eat in relative peace other than people trying to sell you shite every five minutes….i definately won’t be returning….

@NadegeNormilYou might think im crazy but ive been to Porto 13 times since 2015. Its only a 2 hour flight from the uk where i live. Its amazing and so beautiful and ive made friends and met some lovely people over the years. I know i will have a great time every time i go. My accommodation company has a shuttle service i get free transport from the airport and they take me back to the airport. I use the same company all the time they know me it saves me a lot of hassle. I also get a little discount on my stay.
