Super Mario 64 120 Star TAS: 2012 vs 2026 (Side-by-Side) SM64
Video Overview & Insights
How much did the Super Mario 64 120 Star TAS improve in 14 years?
Great video, would appreciate an original, thumbnail that didn't use generative AI tho
This video compares the legendary 2012 TAS with the new 2026 TAS, placing every star side by side so you can directly see how the routes, movement, strategies and optimizations have evolved.
**Compared runs:**
you're back!!what have you been doing in your absence
2012 TAS: 1:20:41.517
2026 TAS: 1:14:04
Almost perfect. One thing I would have loved to see is the levels synced up to start of control - for example when text boxes appear at the start of the levels due to star count. That way the comparison is better, and it won't seem like the old TAS did Whomp King quicker. Also maybe pause the new one just before Bowser 2 and 3, and MC so we see the fight comparison clearer and just MC run comparison.
Total improvement: approximately 6 minutes and 38 seconds
Each star has been synchronized individually, making it easier to see exactly where time is gained and how dramatically Super Mario 64 TASing has advanced since the previous run.
2012 TAS: It doesn't get any better then this.
2026 TAS: Lets talk about parallel dimensions
This is a fan-made comparison edit created to document and showcase the evolution of the 120 Star TAS. I did not create either TAS. Full credit belongs to the TAS creators and original uploaders.
**Original videos:**
I've watched this TAS about 14 times now, it's just so amazing to watch.

Previous 2012 TAS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgLoyL4dBt8
Amazing work but i would have enjoyed a Single Star Timer + Textbox outcuts but still really nice to watch
Which star has the most impressive improvement?
#SuperMario64 #SM64 #TAS
I wish that there was a clock at the end of each star that starts to count up the time delta between the new tas and old tas completion.

I wonder how much time save is just down to knowledge of parallel universes
@RaindropEyewashThis really lets me appreciate the effort the new TAS went through to save time after these long years. Every 100 coin star had some good time saves, furthering the gap between the already great TAS.
1:14:56 Was this a star duplication or star displacement? I'd like to hear or see a video more about this one.
good video for the most part, you just forgot to account for the time spent in textboxes that differ between the two tases. For example, the wall kicks will work star in CCM. The old tas starts with that star, and therefore has a textbox. The new tas does not start with that star, so it does not have a textbox. That makes the difference between the two times seem different than what they actually are.
@fizitdaboiSimpleflips literally just mentioned that someone needs to make this in his video reacting to the new 120-star TAS. Well done! Try to get him to react to this!
@Benobot99For years i didn't know what TAS was, as a dumb kid i was so impressed that somebody was actually playing like this. And i've spend many hours trying to copy those moves and was shocked how impossible they were :D
@OmewgaThe Womp Boss is slower?
@GreenMeansGOFloved this
@arski27"Durrr AI slop thumbnail detected IMMEDIATELY DISLIKED!!!" Y'all mfs need to grow up and judge videos based on the content of what's inside instead of the cover.
@FrahdChikunUploader: provides great content
Viewer when they see 0.000001% AI used: I CAN'T WATCH THIS
Thumbnail made me think some ai slop farm got prompted to ramble for 20 minutes about "TAS hasn't just changed β it's evolved!" because of the new TAS's popularity. Pleasantly surprised its the actual star comparison.
@Lolzer_BruhVideo disliked because of AI thumbnail, which is a HUGE HUGE shame because there was clearly a lot of effort put into making the video otherwise. I would take comic sans on top of a screenshot of the video instead of AI. Don't tarnish your hard work like this, the video you made doesn't deserve to be dismissed because you used the slop machine to "make" the thumbnail.
@WoahItsWeejThe new TAS somehow makes the old TAS look human-viable
@MxPokirbyWhen's the Star by Star comparison romhack going to be used
@helton3425The time save on Snowman's Land 100 Coins is crazy. And seeing how much faster matching 100 Coins with Koopa the Quick is on Tiny Huge Island makes you wonder why they did it with the 8 Red Coins before.
EDIT: And Quick Race through Downtown is so much faster with Parallel Universe strats. As is the Wet Dry World 100 Coins.
EDIT 2: Cannonless has progressed a lot in the past 14 years, huh? And I really should have waited to watch the whole thing before commenting...
Very well edited!
@animtronvideoJust one star in, and I'm already wondering why the old run took such an indirect route through the Vanish Cap stage.
@JorWat25merry video πππππππ
@luisfranciscolecarosgalvez-e7okill all ai user
@RichConnerGMNWhile crazy new strats like the sign clip in HMC and that weird invisible-ceiling BLJ in TTC are the coolest bits of the new TAS, the vast majority of the work went into the invisible eking out of frames here and there, it's only with this side-by-side comparison you get to appreciate all this.
@alexpotts6520why is the thumbnail AI slop
cmon do better
The one 14 years ago was ahead of its time tbh
@jackbosshardt669Sick.
