Steve Reviews: Mary and Max
Video Overview & Insights
This week we take a look at the critically acclaimed film Mary and Max. The story of a pen-pal friendship between a young girl in Australia, and a middle aged man in America.
Toni Colette's range is crazy, 'cause what do you mean she later went on to do Hereditary lmao

I love how Mary's letters to Max are in sepia as well.

9:11 For some reason, I get a small feeling of joy everytime Mary eats her food. Like, look at her!
@YaelDuldulaoi dont get it, how was he a pedophile? all he did was send her letters, and even then they werent sexual. he didnt plan on marrying her or making kids, he only wanted a friend.
@FancyThinkerCosmoAverage night in NY
@Bloodtwin161Oh. Aspergers is autism. Ok that makes sense.
@the_god_of_the_english6:17 Toni Collette is in this ? More reason to like her she’s amazing in hereditary and little miss sunshine
@Kingkevo17384:39 that's not a limp bizkit reference, isn't it?
@callmebrandodyno287orsomethingWe watched it as a film studies course study. I couldn't hear Ce Sera (spelling aside) for YEARS.
Good film, Aussie made.

@FrameendI sure wish I liked being an aspie 😐
I'm not having fun with it lol
I think the age gap is odd, no 40 year old man should be talking to a minor

I'M SORRY DOES THAT MEAN A CURE FOR AUTISM-
I Too Have Autism
@sydneyhamilton2575I just realize that there a piece on each of their head that was red and different from their living color. And max died looking at mary letter almost make me cry
@m4dnessn1ghtyears late but i remember...oddly seeing this when i was young and broke down crying my granparents asked me why i was crying over a silly looking movie i told them that i didn't really know but i felt like i should and needed too
@butterballmach2Watched it today, ngl I got very invested in the story and characters. It's tragic yet also beautiful. It's real and doesn't hold anything back.
@Captain_Yorkie1The Character Max looks like Shrek
@jarron2479how did Mary's child and her not die... didn't she take the pills? Wouldn't she still overdose and die?
@PaperMan15When I saw this film for the first time, the ending utterly broke me. My grandmother asked why I was crying and I tried explaining the ending of the film to her only for her to assume I was worried that I would end up like Max someday. That only made me feel worse and I've tried to avoid seeing this film ever since.
@THEnicholasvancoskyI literally almost cried at the end
@simonhorton43186:40
me.
You know back in the days of being handed a folder full of burnt DVDs as a kid and watching random stuff? Yeah, I saw this movie at the age of like 14. To this day at the age of 26 it’s now one of my favourites ❤
@AuzzieAnxietyYou ever have to stop a video multiple times and just process not even the video but just life oh lifes great irony
@forrestwallis7885Well toni collete is for adult mary specifically kid mary is berthany Whitmore
@BZGR-484People always call Adam’s films “misery porn” and its disheartening. People are disgusted by movies where peoples lives aren’t perfect. Id say my life is something out of a film of his. YES its possible for someone to suffer that much, it’s just rotten luck.
@onlinesafety3635Is Max meant to be Autistic..?? As there are QUITE few things that he has that relate alot to autistic people, aswell.. Also, OH..MY...GOD! This film got SO dark and heavy...
@pheonixfire9517Mary learned to love herself.
Max learned to forgive others .
Both accept imperfections of ourselves and others.
I got distracted by the ugly baby at the end 😭
@Sara-pk8wvThe stop motion is perfect for this kind of film.
If Coraline looked like this film, and this film looked like Coraline, both movies would look wrong

@7_revolboy_75:06 okay that would be fall out much here laughing. I hope that animation wasn't too hard to do, either way it was totally worth it though.
@nelsonbelanger4422I watched this when I was a kid, not knowing what it was when I was like 7, and was lowkey haunted by how real the depression felt

@Chicaplush-y7sToni Colette voiced Mary? I'll be darned.
@coffeecat83i don't really find aspie as an insult. it's just an abbreviation of the word. grandma, granny. transgender, you know the rest.
@shelby5809tbf tho, chocolate hotdogs do sound like a good way to spend money
@V1snumThe face the dad makes b4 he gets killed cracks me up every time 😂
@peterdavies2960What song plays at the start
@Hydrisk231If you enjoyed Toni's vocals as Mary I recommend you checking out "United States of Tara" if you can find it or get it in the UK since it's been along time since the show was canceled in the US via Showtime.
She plays a women with a form of Schizophrenia & has multipule different characters that she plays throughout the show including a teenage girl, a 50's kind of trad wife & a sort of animalistic being that wears a poncho named Gimme (if I can recall). Even though it's not an animated show It's hilarious but also dark & pretty interesting.
