The results of this election really are bizarre & worrying. I'm not making allegations of fraud or anything like that, but the numbers are so strange & unlike any election in LA Co. history.

This is a vast oversimplification, but basically, the way it works is that LA Co. announces the election results in 3 different sets of votes. The 1st set is the early mail-in ballots. They are very 1st results announced on election night. The 2nd is the in-person ballots. These are counted & the results announced in small batches throughout election night & into the early morning. The 3rd set is the late mail-in ballots. These are ballots that were mailed/dropped off on or just before election day & were not received in time to be counted as part of the early mail-in voting. This 3rd set of results are released daily in the 2 wks (mostly 1 wk) after election day.

In this election, the early mail-in ballots represented about 47% of the total votes, the in-person about 18%, & the late mail-in about 35%. The total results after each set of votes were released are as follow:

After early mail-in: Bass 37%, Pratt 30%, Raman 30%.
Total after in-person: Bass 35, Pratt 30, Raman 22.
Total after all ballots: Bass 34, Pratt 25, Raman 29.


There are some demographic differences between people who vote by mail vs. people who vote in-person, so it's completely normal to see some differences between the 1st & 2nd sets of numbers. And historically, the in-person voting has been more liberal than the early mail-in ballots, so it wasn't surprising to see Raman do better in the in-person voting than she did in the early voting. But what happened between the 2nd & 3rd set of votes is just shocking & cannot be explained by simple demographic differences between people who turn in their ballots on or just before election day w/ all other voters in the city & county. Breaking down how each round voted, it looks like this:

Early VBM: Bass 37, Pratt 30, Raman 20

In-person: Bass 30, Pratt 30, Raman 27

Late VBM: Bass 32, Pratt 15, Raman 42



Again, the demographic differences between in-person & mail-in voters can explain why Raman's & Bass's numbers are different between the 1st 2 sets. But that 3rd set is just so wildly inconsistent with the other 2 sets, that it can't be explained by simple demographic differences. I don't know if there is voter fraud, but any statistician who looks at these numbers can tell you that some external factor has to be affecting these numbers...
