Sons of Mars - Norse Version | Farya Faraji & The Skaldic Bard

Video Overview & Insights

Here is a Norse adaptation of @faryafaraji.and.worldmusicians's epic song Sons of Mars. Music by Farya Faraji, Old Norse lyrics by me, vocals by Farya Faraji and myself. This is my arrangement adapted from Farya’s original Norse arrangement, which features in our symphony The Varangian’s Saga—I’d encourage you all to check it out! The lyrics of the refrain come from my song Brothers of the North Sea, which features as a leitmotif in the saga.

This is my arrangement adapted from Farya’s original Norse arrangement, which features in our symphony The Varangian’s Saga—I’d encourage you all to check it out! The lyrics of the refrain come from my song Brothers of the North Sea, which features as a leitmotif in the saga.

The runes chanted in the middle of the song spell out the 16 characters of the Younger Futhark—the runic alphabet in use in Middle Age Scandinavia, which was gradually replaced by the Latin alphabet (though its use continued in some parts of Scandinavia until as late as the 19th century). I included them because rune poems are an ancient custom in Germanic culture, so this is a little nod to that. I also couldn't help but think of the runic inscription in the Hagia Sophia; the Futhark here is meant to symbolise the Varangians' Norse roots and their new Hellenic/Roman reality. I also love how they fit symmetrically with the amount of bars in the musical interlude.

Links to The Varangian's Saga and the original Sons of Mars are in the description.

I hope you enjoy this arrangement! Feel free to leave a comment if you did; they’re always a pleasure to read.

Lyrics:

Komi sigr eða bani,
verðum vér ei hugvani.
Betra er, at mey siti í sorgum
en lifi í náðum með ǫrgum.

Brǿðr erum norðrsjóvar,
einskonar eiðs, blóðs ok trúar.
Fyrir sakir Miklagarðs
lifa ok deyja Væringjar.

Lyrics:

In Icelandic:
Komi sigur eða bani,
verðum við ekki huglausir.
Betra er að sitja í sorg
en að lifa í skömm með öðrum.

Bræður erum við norðurhafsins,
bundnir af sama eiði, blóði og trú.
Fyrir málstað Miklagarðs
lifa og deyja Væringjar.

— @CarpathianWolf-ZSU

They would most likely not have been brothers of the North Sea though, but rather the Baltic Sea. - Austrmarr or -Eystra Salt.

As a Greek I am so thankful forr the Varangians that lost their lives and gave their sword not obly to defend Orthodoxy, but also my ancestors.
They are as much heroes for me as the recent WW2 or Independence war heroes. 💪🏻👍🏻

As a Romaios, a descendant of the "byzantine" (Roman) greeks, born and raised in Germany, I greet with great reverence all descendants of the old Scandinavians, the Rus, and the Anglo-Saxons. For the Varangoi, who were made up of these peoples, were unparalleled warriors, renowned for their extraordinary strength, courage, and their loyalty.
