Songwriting, ep 1: How to Turn Your Ideas Into Songs

Video Overview & Insights

I'm gonna do more of these. More than anything, I am the world's biggest creativity cheerleader - DO COOL STUFF!

my mind is blown, im currently picking the pieces off the ground.

— @PrinceOSpades0124

If you know key chord functions and understand time signatures you can manipulate all your ideas into songs. Some cool progression that you came up with 4 years ago actually works well with tonight's random riff! You just gotta line them up into the same key and feel.

Whistle, hum, or scat your melody, then play it. It has built in rhythm Deconstruct the chord progression. If the chorus is singable for you, then It is automatically in the right key. I've been writing titles. Song structure is easy. Subject matter is more difficult.

not even a minute into your first video on this and i completely agree. Find a way to capture anything inspired. I've been playing forever but lately really trying to learn to actually write and i cant tell you how many times i've had great sounds in my head or just tried something on a guitar and was like OOOOOH I NEED TO RECORD THAT.... so yeah, great advice. will continue watching for sure now

Also a small thing, but if you find a music idea in guitar, you can try it out on the bass or vocals, or the other way round. Some things might not work well on one instrument but better on others

Eric: you’ve accumulated $700.
You want a nice combo amp with reverb.
It’d be cool if it can keep up with a drummer, but whatever. Used is cool.

What do you pick?

I was absolutely hearing B as chord one in mixolydian harmony in the first example

I’ve begun to “think” of the form visually linearly like a mini-movie storyboard and it helps me shape the song keeping attention to low and high points dynamics and intensity/density tension/resolution and firmly maintain the form.

Thanks for this very informative instructional video on songwriting. I’m a musician, singer, and songwriter. Right now, I’m sick with a bad cold and headache and was looking for some inspiration. I’ve been told that I’m creative when it comes to writing songs but somehow I feel the need to stretch my creativity. I’m hoping for the day when I’ll have the courage to record my own original compositions. You mentioned something to the effect of having the knowledge of music theory—I think it was that you only needed to know what was essential and/or the basics..sorry I had a hard time understanding. Interestingly, I’ve taken many courses of music theory yet in some ways, I’m not sure if they’re really useful—e.g. counterpoint in which you learn to write music in the form of Gregorian chants. Nevertheless, I found your video to be quite helpful. I’ve subscribed to your YouTube channel. Thanks very much!

Good stuff! Thank you for your excellent content!
We are a couple of old school guys that live in different states and use two TASCAM DP-32's to record our original music by sending SD cards back and forth (I said we were old school) then we post it on our YouTube channel. We do it for fun and keeping our friendship alive despite the miles between us.

i never got into song writing and these days i'm kinda too disillusioned with learning anything new on youtube since looking anything up throws a million "HERE'S THE SECRET TRICK TO LEARNING HOW TO BECOME AN EXPERT SONG WRITER IN 5 MINUTES" videos that i know won't get me anywhere, so finding a nice, calm and more sincere series on a topic i'm genuinely interested in means the world to me. not only do i learn something, i also get to sit back and feel more at ease as if i'm just in a classroom learning and not having as much information thrown at me as is possible with hyperactive editing, thanks a lot for this <3

Listening to you talk about songwriting and messing around with different sounds is similar to watching Bob Ross paint a masterpiece. I'm completely relaxed and inspired, and the world seems a bit brighter.

For those of you with an iPhone, there is an app called “tape it” that is a great little idea grabber. You can put a record button on your Lock Screen, and with one tap it opens the app and automatically starts recording audio. You can then stack up to 4 tracks and do little cursory mix. Great for catching this sudden inspos.
