This is something you see across all organisms called biomimicry. When 2 species converge one my quickly and dramatically adopt physical characteristics of the other.

More nutrient dense foods lead to greater size and development. In other news, water is wet.

Fun fact : The latest research in paleontology links the morphological traits of the Megalodon to a mako shark, rather than a great white shark, like we believed in the past... Imagine the power and the speed of an 80 feet mako... It is even more terrifying IMO...

I applaud these scientists for their work. I would not be able to do such disgusting work, even in the pursuit knowledge. I don't have the stomach for it myself. Just watching it was making me a little green. 🤢

When Orca scare off Great White sharks there will be plenty of pinnepeds for a Mako that can easily outswim Orca.

Interested to know how squids sastofy big white sharks in the cafe but not makos . But definitely needed the seals to get huge .

Mako sharks are also well known and documented to prey on various dolphins as well, so sea lions and other pinnipeds are not the only large marine mammals they prey upon.

Honestly, not shocked that if a predator exceeds its normal size range it would have to adapt to get enough food to survive. At that size, it has enough power to actually bring down an adult sea lion. A younger, smaller shark would lack the size needed to guarantee a kill, and when hunting another predator, if you cannot kill it outright, you run the risk of becoming the prey yourself. Younger Makos could very well find themselves on the sea lions menu. Just like if a mako was too small and tried to hunt squid, it could very easily find itself becoming a meal.

Anecdotal evidence from some divers, to include a dive buddy from a dive I was on. There have been a couple sightings of a Sea Lion carcass off the coast of La Jolla, CA at 60ft of depth, that appeared to be a shark predation event. Horizontal visibility is often 5 to 25 ft, so it's very rare to see sharks on a dive, especially Makos and White shark.

I remember watching Monster Mako with my dad when I visited. It's a memory I'll hold forever, even if I harely remember the show and only focused on the Mako😅

This is nothing new... And the mako's aren't the only sharks that are doing it. In the early '80s during an El niño year We witnessed an enormous great hammerhead shark probably about 17 ft long kill a California sea lion. We were catching Bonita and mackerel and the sea lions were going after the fish we were reeling in. This shark came under the boat and hit one of those sea lions like a freight train, ripped its tail flippers off then spun around in a tight circle and hit it again shredding its belly/ side and ripping its guts open. This happened literally right at the boat. The shark then swam off for a couple minutes and let the sea lion bleed out. Then the shark came back and started parting it out . By the time the shark returned after the first bites, the sea lion was barely alive. It was floating at the surface disemboweled and gasping for breath. To this day... It's one of the nastiest most violent things I've ever seen. We were close enough to look the sea lion in the eyes and it was very sad watching it suffer. That shark's head was massive The eyes on the ends of its hammer must have been close to 5 ft apart and the dorsal fin was absolutely huge. You can't really appreciate the body mass of a shark that size until you actually see one up close.

White sharks naturally progress through fish on to mammals. Seals, whales, etc.. A Maco doesn’t have the instinct to start feeding on mammals as a normal prey animal, but if for some reason they do. Well then you have a food source to maximize that Maco. None of us know just how big they could get.

Stable isotope analysis graph at 9:15 says delta 15 C % on X axis. I assume 13 C is meant, 15 C has halftime of 2.5 sec. Not exactly stable.

It is interesting how little changes can make a species change behavior and size... So that in relatively short time, species can change a lot.
