I got my hands on some fancy solid-state dehumidifiers from the company Rohsal and tried to build the filament dry box of the future, which is maintenance-free and very efficient. Yet how does this novel technology compare to regular silica gel and how often should you replace the silica gel in your dry box?

I love your videos and willingness to dive deep into the 3D printing world, however, I was extremely disappointed to see that you showcase a product that was the result of a company that ripped off their customers! I am talking about SUNLU and the way they funded their development of the S4 Filadryer via Kickstarter. Turns out SUNLU did not send out the dryers to all the backers who paid for them, leaving hundreds without the dryers they promised to provide...then ghosted everyone they ripped off! To this day, they will not answer any inquiries into that project. Were you aware of this? This is why I will not do any business with SUNLU, and I encourage everyone in the 3D printing community to do the same. Shame on SUNLU for their criminal attitude towards the very folks who helped fund them!

I made a dehumidifier with a cat litter substrate that can be reheated in the microwave to dry out.
It's not as effective as silica gel, but it's practically free!
Would you consider including that method in your comparison video?
Thanks for your content.
It's very valuable!

combine this with a heating element and circulating fan and we can turn the AMS into the ultimate all in one box (once that price comes down).

Just one tip: The reason there is more humidity when the temperature increases is because warm air by nature can hold more moisture. That's just physics. So if you want the most dry air in your box, keep it in a cool place.

I found myself thinking your dryer cage might be better if mounted on the outside of the AMS shell. Just a bit though for air circulation within the box.

i think a low power fan blowing in the direction of the dryer element would make the initial dip in humidity falls much faster and get a little lower baseline humidity ... it would be a cool experiment to make.

Hi Stefan,
This was a very interesting video. The problem I see is the customer, let me explain:
Printfarms are usually in a separated room with a HVac system, that keep the room dry. So no luck here.
Also companies that have these Rapid prototying usually have producting grade maschines by compannies that offer maintenace service .
So I think the solution is definitly on the cheaper side and enthusiats solutions where the market is harder.
I think it is more cost effective to upgrade to metal or glas enclusers and keep the selica.
Ultimakers material station has a dehumidifying system with selica that get heated periodically to reset it.

I just received my Bambu p2s combo mid January 2026 loaded it up & started printing. Canceled the job because it was very stringy (detected by the camera). So I used the AMS 2 to dry the filament rolls. Printed the desiccant boxes for the front & back of the printer (the center box has a place for temp & humidity) then I printed the desiccant for the center of the spools. Now the humidity is near 0 % according to the AMS & the center desiccant box shows 10 %.
Spools from the factory are sealed at what ever the humidity was at that factory & definitely need to be dried before use.
Thanks for the video, I think the commercial dryers do the best then storage in a sealed box with as much dry desiccant as you can to keep it dry & ready to print immediately.

Hi, I just want to thank you. I've put small one on my sealed Euro box (~7m^3). I have no problem since than. The humidity always stays around 30%. 0 maintenance, Now I'm considering to upgrade my bambulab ams with a smaller one. But damn, they are so expensive...!

IF! The Oxygen really stay on the dehumidifier, or even stay in the AMS / container .... then you have a lot of free hydrogen in the air around of the AMS / Container and a lot of free oxygen in the container. It will not react by itself slowly .... it will accumulate .... this seems a little dangerous.

If you have just one of these units .... i gues its not a problem. 30g isnt that much.

Guten Tag Stefan!
One thing I rarely see considered when trying to keep things dry is diurnal pumping in rigid enclosures. Due to changes in atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, and even pressure changes due to HVAC cycling, there will be an exchange of air in and out of a rigid container if it is not perfectly sealed. Flexible containers (bags?) do not have this issue, as the internal volume just changes to balance the internal and external pressure. A flexible bladder (bag or balloon) can be added inside or outside a rigid container to absorb the pressure changes, greatly reducing the exchange of air. The bladder or diaphragm must be very flexible, so that it is easier for the air to expand or collapse it than to leak through any tiny openings in the container. The bladder material must also be very light (like thin polyethylene sandwich bag) so that it's own weight doesn't squeeze the air out.

I would be interested to see what combination of silica and membrane dehumidifier. The silica should help with drying faster and the membrane dehumidifier should dry the silica for longer use

That MDL-7 Membrane dehumidifier is insanely expensive, at $458.

@CookieManCookies

Would you consider doing a similar analysis for a peltier based solution? That's going to require a bit of design though. You need to buy a peltier module, heatsinks for the cold and warm side, fans, and design a funnel that lets the warm air circulate to "collect" humidity, and then be pushed to the cold side heatsink where it will condense, and finally design a funnel for the condensed water drops to flow outside

@sephirothbahamut245
@

Very nice, as usual!

@targetfun
@

AMS or similiar product cost so much and don't even provide solid state dehumidifier to dry filament

@acessoon8518
@

Is there any data available from them that would indicate how much area a particular Rosahl model can dehumidify effectively?

@SpangledOne
@

If you want more stable water content readings, you should convert relative humidity to partial pressure of water or mg/m^3 of water.

RH itself is a function of temperature, so you will see the RH reading fluctuate with temperature even if the absolute quantity of water in the air stays the same.
