Snowdon Mountain Railway, Ride to the Roof of Wales!
Video Overview & Insights
Join us on a scenic and historic journey as we "Ride to the Roof of Wales", aboard the Snowdon Mountain Railway. We'll climb to the peak of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, and try and take in the views (if slightly misty) views. The history of the Snowdon Mountain Railway is quite something, an epic feat of engineering. Along the way, we'll share the history of the line and give you some tips to have a wonderful day on the railway and in Llanberis.

Shocking prices. Gone up so much in just 3 years and they want 4 quid just to book it online. Rip off Britain again. Cheaper to go abroad.

Lovely memory of my trip up the mountain in October this year, seeing your vid (although great to see it again) makes me so grateful and appreciative of how very lucky I was to have perfect weather on the day I visited - mid-October so cool but crystal clear skies and fantastic visibility at the top. An experience I'll never forget. ❤

Went on this train in 2000 the carriage was so overpacked I’m surprised they didn’t have to put 2 engines on to pull it up the hill, due to the over packing of the carriages it spoiled the whole trip😠

Such a shame you didn't have the best weather. I went in August 2018 and had great weather for the ride up with amazing views. At the very top it was misty but from inside the visitor centre we could cleary see the summit and walkers making their way up. Sadly it was impossible for me to do it due to disabilities but it was nice the see it.
The ride down was equally spectacular. We passed a point where the walking trail converges with the line and there was lots of happy waving from us and the walkers. It was rather sweet really like a scene from the railway children.
It is rather disappointing that you made your way there in a car. There are plenty of buses. We travelled all round by rail and bus seeing spectacular scenery. To get to Snowden we stayed in nearby Betws-y-Coed. Then got a bus from there to Llanberis. I think it may have been nice if you could have mentioned the public transport links even if you didn't take advantage of them yourself.
Some people see things like this but think they can't go as they have no car or do have a car but don't realise they can get there in other ways. I had no idea i could get there until i read an article about bus links. We stayed in 3 places on the Conway Valley line. Blaenau Ffestiniog for the Ffestiniog railway, Betws-y-Coed for the Snowdon Mountain railway and Slate museum on the Llanberis lake railway, then finally Llandudno for a ride on the tram up Great Orme and lovely seaside to round of our trip all by train and bus. It was great fun and would love to do it again.

Well, a few of the locomotives are just barely older than my grandfather. The rest are younger.

I used to camp at Llyn Gwynant. I think that’s how it’s spelt.

Weather is important.
@stevenliao8599My wife and I will be there in August 2025 from Qld Australia,,cannot wait!
@honkytonk25That railway looks amazing
I wish i could volunteer there
Omg they rebuilt the super heated engines 0:06
For those who don’t know the 3 engines 6 to 8 were turned into spare boilers
Wow! Thank you for the tour of Snowden and the railway! I got the true Welsh experience, lots and lots of fog!
@Freakymum-l1cThe basis for the Rev Awdry's Mountain Engine book. :)
@minicle426Sadly you visited on the wrong day. Very cloudy. Couldn't capture the beauty of the place

I walked up the mountain when on a school trip (in the 60s) and we came down on the train .one of our class mates wore a pair of stilettos ,😂 bad move .❤❤😊
@lynneburns4303Fabulous views even if cloudy. I was not really surprised to find that there are 2 geocaches at the Snowdon summit.
@catherinewoods3132Do you know if there are civilians living there?
@brayan20yAre dogs allowed on the train ride?
@janerobinson1876Best time is summer i think??
@syedmahidalam1349This Is Cool, Love The Music You Pick At The End ❤❤
@francinebarr1204Train times?
@kannanmuniandyThank you so much for precise Knowledge about the Snowdon mountain railway with it's history, i really enjoyed it as a second year travel and tourism management student this video helped me alot to know about the history and locomotive that Snowdon uses thanks !❤
@JOONIEFICS1994Prices for a return ticket in 2024 are £55. I'm sure to some people, this seems good value, but £110 for a couple to travel up a mountain and back down again is, no pun intended, a bit steep!
@thechriswhewellI'm considering to head to 1st train 9AM. Is it foggy at the top in the mornings? Would be wiser to take an afternoon train to the top? Thank you.
@trifunivanov2269Just where is the tilting engine? I havnt seen it in over thirty years now
@expattaffy1954That’s a little lie. In the late 70s I fell out the door age 6. My dad pulled the emergency thing and got me all safe and well. We happily continued our journey. No harm done. The reason I’m here watching this is because I’m planning to go up the mountain by rail again very soon. 😊
@sharonconley1007there are many other mountains. snowdon too busy.. Try Cadair Idris.
@ephebo2025Llanberis was joined to Caernarfon by a branch line.
@tompritchard1943What if you want to ride up but walk back down??? Is that allowed??
@jaynorris3722Nice landscape, nice video!
@Mt.MitchellpacemakerAt 16:22 we catch our first glimpse of what we came to see: the sheep!
@acratone8300How long does the entire trip up and down take? Thanks,
@ClaymanGamiing❤️
