Signs your cat may have IBD/Lymphoma
Video Overview & Insights
IBD and Lymphoma form the third of the three common age related conditions that older cats experience. This is my series of videos on common old cat diseases that features the IBD/Lymphoma complex. In it I review the common presenting signs, diagnostic steps and management strategies for this common disorder. You can find the other two videos on common old age cat diseases here:

We think my cat has IBD. He poops and smears it everywhere...but he seems strong as usual. Has anyone had this problem!?

If the cat is almost 14, struggling with diarrhea for almost 2 years, kept under control with gastrointestinal food, entero-chronic probiotics and activated charcoal, and we havenât diagnosed her correctly until now, the 1st recommendation almost 2y ago was to do a biopsy from a younger doctor, but I thought she was too old to perform this kind of surgery. I have an appointment to do another ultrasound next week as the cats condition is worsening. Due to some human food she started defecating with little red blood cells and mucus next to her poop. Is it still a good idea to do a biopsy at this age and her condition if it will be recommended?

And hey, if you enjoy Dr. Uri Burstynâs advice, feel free to tip him what your vet charges for a consult â or, you know, $2 for a coffee to keep him going :
I lost my calico Hayami yesterday, she was 6 years 8 months old. She lost weight rapidly , took her to the vet emergency room. It was confirmed that she had two masses in her intestines, she wouldn't eat any more and could barely even stand up. unfortunately I had to have a her euthanized, there was nothing that they could have done. I miss her dearly.

IBD and IBS are vastly different in humans. Some similar symptoms but vastly different pathology.

My cats vet didn't want to prescribe Budestinine instead of prednisone. I tried but they were just not open to the idea. I'm not sure why.

I've followed you for years, Dr Uri and Mr Pirate and the whole family. My cat got diagnosed with IBD yesterday so I'm trying to learn and I was so relieved to see you had a video on this so I can learn from such a reliable source. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do đ«¶đââŹđŸđ±
@charlieblackrosemy cat has these symptoms, had an ultrasound and got the doubt answer : its either lymphoma either IBD. its a cat with epilepsy, a 9 years tomcat treated orally with phenobarbital for 5 years and a half. do you think this condition could be from long phenobarbital usage? this thing apparently happened after i gave it 2 doses of phenobarbital at a shorter period of time than normal but not overdosing it in total. i discovered first that it got fPL greater than normal, and then, at ultrasound the pancreatitis was confirmed too (besides intestinal and maybe stomach inflammation).
@nps3bBecause veterinary clinics are so expensive I couldnât bring my cat on time to get the proper treatmentâŠ. He passed away in pain and lived in a couple of years in pain. I blame myself for not giving proper help and I blame veterinary clinic for being so freaking expensive.!!!!
@Citibank639These days it cost $3,000 to walk in the door of an emergency vet. How are we supposed to take care of our cats if we are not wealthy?
@akelevenOur 12 year old cat has IBD. She wanted to eat all the time but we suspect it wasnt sticking as she lost .5 kg in hardly any time. we tried gastro food, different varieties, loadsof money, but she didnt like them. So we tried one titield sensitive and she loves it. She has gained .4 of a kg back and we noticed, not sure if its connected, we can stroke her back and she doesnt squeak in pain. Is this a totally good sign? We were told on her next checkup ifvet isnt happy she would need an x ray to rule out cancer. Her thyroid and sugar levels were fine but her white blood cells were slightly elevated on last check before the new food
@kazbaz8645Thank you for these videos. I had to euthanize my cat, nearly 14. We thought he had intestinal lymphoma, but after autopsy(I had requested) we learned he actually have pancreatic cancer. Absolutely surprising. But after the year and a half of living with a cat with ibd, and the vomiting. I am glad he is now at peace because anything like this, with the weight loss, medication, and various vomits and poos.
Also he mentions the smell. I CAN NOT emphasize how bad the smell is.
Thank you doctor for this precious information. I lost my kitty due to exactly these simptoms and the vet did not know what to tell us exactly she had, maybe lymphoma, they suspected it at last minute, but it was too late, even though we told them to investigate everything 3 months ago.. I still beat myself for not going to
another vet as I trusted them.. đą We found our siamese on the streets and she survived with us only 3 months.. Theu also said that she was older than she seemed.. I'm still greaving as she was so inteligent and sweet.. She had us only for 3 months but we loved her so much.. †The Universe put this info a bit late, but I'm still searching for answers regarding our Minnie, and I still got other 4 kitties to take care of. â€
Thank you so much for all the valuable info on ibd. My cat has just been diagnosed with this and is going on a special diet
@sunny4ladyHow is the mentioned alternative Medication to prednisolon called? Couldn't quite catch the word
@ginasubras5753What's that drug that can be used as an alternative to prednisolone? Spelling please! It sounded like "budenocide" but when I looked it up, Google corrected it to "budesonide" which had mixed reviews. Please clarify!
@sarahm7889It is Budesonide not Budenoside.
@andreanicholson5939Took my 17 year old cat to the vet yesterday. For the last 2 weeks he wasnât eating at all, just licking wet food but not eating it. He would just go hide and be by himself. He would look weak when he walked but mostly he just laid. Heâs stomach looked a little swollen. He was a very vocal cat and he stopped meowing for the most part. They told me surgery would be a few thousands of dollars but also take in consideration his age. They suggested I think about euthanasia. I went ahead and did that and guilt had hit hard. I keep thinking if I made a mistake. The day before we took him to the vet and the morning before the vet I gave him shredded chicken and he ate it all and I was so happy for him. đ
@Squishmallows24I'm so sorry to read all these sad stories about people losing their precious cats. I wanted to provide a bit of hope. We got our little lady at 3 1/2 years old (she,s just turned 7) and we suspected IBD almost instantly. She's had some major flare-ups, the most recent lasting around six months, and she lost a LOT of weight. However, we found a diet that seems to agree with her! It's a hydrolised protein diet. We suppliment it with a daily steroid and two teaspoons of pumpkin puree a day, which naturally reduces inflammation and serves as a treat (she enjoys it anyway). Recently, she even started playing again đ„Č
@bananamanchester4156I don't know why small cell lymphoma is a good diagnosis. Sure better than large cell where you can spend thousands and maybe get a few months to a year tops. Small cell looks like maybe 1-2 years or so.
@schadlarryYou have to be wealthy to afford all the tests, imaging, and treatment for animals. I wasted $500 or more (a decade ago) on imaging for this on my cat only to have him die several weeks later. I wish the vet had just plainly told me he was dying. He basically starved to death. He ate, but his body was wasting away. It was horrible, and I didnât realize how sick he was until it was way too late. I was dealing with my own health crisis at the time.
@MM-d289Is the Microscopy stain used on biopsyâs Hematoxylin ?
@mybigsteaminjohn4027May your kitty remain healthy for a long time.
@xindaxoxou7431My 11 yr old cat Natasha stopped eating & I took her to the Vet. She had 2 massive tumors on her abdomen. It was an ending sadly. She was given a good life.
@deannadiehl6849My 7 month old baby girl is suspected to have IBD (because of her chronic diarrhea, occasional bloody poop, low bodyweight and quite possibly pica). I'm aghast because it's rare for cats this young to have it, isn't it? The vet has put her on a prescription diet and probiotics. She's a super fussy eater and I'm worried she'll hate the prescription food and starve herself.đ
@pixiedustinajarI had my baby at the Airport Energency Hospital for 7 hours last night. They ran blood work and did xrays and said he needs a thick cut biopsy done of his intestines. I'm so scared. He's lost alot of weight and has stopped eating. His surgery is Friday. I can't give him his meds they prescribed for nausea and an anti acid bc he won't eat. He threw up alot of blood on Tuesday night then again yesterday. It smells like death đ. I'm praying it is just IBD and can manage it.
@jonibarnett2138Really appreciated watching this! My almost 11 y.o. male cat is being treated for IBD at present. He went from 13.6 to 9.8. I'm worried sick about my lil boy! You gave me hope. Thank you.
@SSaaNNddYY77I think that my cat has ibs but her hind legs and half of her body is swollen. What can be wrong with her?
@violainemarty3052My best friend passed away Tuesday 5/13/25 at the age of 20. He had primary lung cancer, and the rapid weight loss was one of the first things we noticed. He ended up passing away from pulmonary edema, it just got too bad.
@thriftycharmscrochetBeen dealing with IBD symptoms for a while, too long actually. One of the many unspoken struggles the impoverished deal with, watching their animals remain ill for too long while you scrape and save what you can to one day have enough to see a vet. My 13yr old Russian dealt with pancreatitis for almost a year, dropped down to <10lbs because of the anorexia/nausea combo and now that the "symptom disease" is taken care of, he's been dealing with loud tummy gurgling and diarrhea and even more muscle wasting. I finally have enough again to get him in the clinic next week. I'm hoping with every fiber of my being that it's ibd and not cancer because that's when the hardest decision of my life must be made. I just hope he can forgive me or at least knows I love him and have been trying my hardest, he deserves better than what I can barely seem to provide.
@cbhoundgamingCancer treatment in cats is too expensive in USA
@michelletripp655Hi, can you tell me exactly what the less invasive surgery is called. I would like to discuss with my vet.
Thank you
Wow you described my cat exact situation
@asooltyOh bless pirate, he does not look his age.
My Betty is 16, she had a bad UTI a few weeks ago, all seemed ok, now she has developed a runny poo, fortunately only small poo, she lost a lot of weight, but seems to be putting it on, and now this, poo. I feel sorry for my cat đą
What is a good food for IBD? I am just starting this journey with my beautiful girl Kitt. I want to give her the best fighting chance. I havenât gotten a biopsy only X-ray that show inflammation so itâs not clear if itâs IDB or lymphoma. I will be hearing from her doctor tomorrow about her thyroid test. On the videos Iâve watched regarding these diseases all state throwing up and diarrhea. But thatâs not her issue she has chronic constipation. The severe constipation leads to diarrhea then to vomiting. This has been for about 5 years Iâve taken her off dry food. I keep looking for a better diet but it all leads back to here. It just happens more frequently, about every 3 months. If someone could provide me a food alternative thatâs help your cat, Kitt and I would greatly appreciate it â€
@itsmystupidnameMy 9 almost 10 year old boy as of last week started having diarrhea in small amounts that is smelly with mucous in it. He's had it before in the past but it ws very short lived after giving him purina fortiflora, he does get hairballs once and a while, and he will get some smell large firm poops with hair in it but this small amounts of diarrhea with mucus thats lasted for a week? Thats been something hes never really dealt with before. Hes currently taking fortiflora and an antidiarrheal pill 3 times a day but hes still about the same. He still eats and has an appetite, though his love for his hydrolyzed dry food has decreased ever so slightly but over all be still begs for his food. Hes active, he drinks his water, urinates, and is social and cuddly. He will even let me rub his belly.
Doctor, do you think my cat has gi lymphoma or Ibd?
My boy wonât eat novel proteins or prescription food
@lizashaw1809My cat has ibd we think itâs chicken. They want to do a fine needle aspirate in his stomach is this safe or should I just give steroids
That point about them being allergic to the alternative meat over time is something I suspected in my cat. That's so helpful. We also give him proviable-forte and psyllium husk.
@MaryFrank-UlgenThank you so much! This was very informative!
@pamelaevans-schink8707Thank you for the information Dr. Uri! How did you know that Pirate would be ok coming off budesonide? At what point did you decide you wanted to try tapering off of it?
@sarahtatleyMy 16 yo cat just diagnosed wirh ibd. 1cm inflammation in his stomach and small intestins ultra sound scan showed. He's been put on 1mg busedsonide. Will it be strong enough to help bring that inflammation down.? We are day 26 on bude. Still no appetite and vommitting episodes. I expect it's going to take quite some time to get the inflammation down Moved him to novel protein
@dawnmartyneThank you for this video so much! It is really interesting about food exclusion diet, i want to switch my baby from chicken to ostrich meat, should it be a total switch or steady gradual adding in ? As i am worried sudden change can cause upset stomach too
@lana_puWhat is the least invasive method for getting a full biopsy? Is it keyhole or something else?
@ishwarilaughing6256
