thank you for confirming. I was misleaded for a long time, by thehatedone... The "thread model" of a general user should be just to improve its privacy by reducing the exposure of data to the data miners, mainly big techs and ISPs. Yes, VPN might not totally erase your fingerprint, but it already does A Lot only by hiding your IP. If they have automated systems to track us easily just by our IP and we break that capability with a Vpn, then that's it, we are achieving our goal to diminish their business model, but don't tell me that a vpn is "useless" just because I'm not 100% anonymous... Not everyone seek to be an Eduard Snowden.

Maybe this was out of the scope of the question so you didn't mention it, but when on public wifi it's essential. I know most sites are E2E encrypted so it shouldn't matter but I think there are still ways of intercepting your traffic and hacking someone who is NOT on a VPN.

@soulbrother5435Reminds me how I recently had an argument on r/linuxmint when I was asking regarding an issue with it using any sort of VPN via NetworkManager. It quickly turned into people going on about "why are you needing a VPN because it doesn't do anything for your privacy" when I clearly said I have this to remotely manage servers without exposing those devices to the internet. (facepalms hard) This is why it's so hard to get people onto Linux, I'm a freaking sysadmin who knows what I'm doing and I can't deal with these people sometimes, new users are fracked, and the Mint community (at least used to be) one of the better ones for new users. :'(
@Technopath47DNS-PN, DNS Sevice Providers are another way to get around a lot of the things you need to without needing a VPN, and can be tailored/fine tuned for monitoring, blocking 🚫 etc. Highly recommended.
@donshadows5501Some public wifi‘s block my proton vpn wireguard, so I have to dis- and reconnect my vpn to establish a stealth-connection. Is my phone still secure/protected from malicious influences in the network because there is a short time my phone was in the wifi without vpn turned on? If not, what can I do about this?
@MM-ik4ltopsec note: on public or enterprise wifi networks that force you to install root CAs to access them, such as universities, VPNs can mitigate SSL bumping and prevent DNS snooping. some networks even block encrypted DNS (DNS over TLS) and only DNSOH will work. A VPN circumvents all of those issues and secures your browsing history (and even passwords if SSL bumping is occurring) from network admins and anyone who asks them for a peak.
