Seth Godin – Leadership vs. Management - What it means to make a difference

Video Overview & Insights

The world-renowned marketing and leadership author Seth Godin talks about the difference between leadership and management, the confusion surrounding them, and why the world needs more leaders.

Transparency

— @LatarshaHill

Key Points:

• Management works well in terms of increasing economic efficiency and productivity. But, in the face of rapid change, the world needs leadership to get through this stage of unprecedented transformation.

Honesty

— @LatarshaHill

• You should strive for excellence. Producing something truly great is the only way to build competitive advantage because sophisticated robots, artificial intelligence, and low-paid labor will handle the trivial job of assuring quality.

• You should focus on “soft skills” which are actually “real skills”. Those are the characteristics that differentiate a potential employee from a robot.

Accountability

— @LatarshaHill

• Effective leadership can help companies navigate difficulties and failures, and eventually find successful processes to get forward.

Questions to consider:

Unfortunately, there is a cost and price to pay if you practice what he is talking about.

— @clintonnolan476

• How can you become more of a leader than a manager?

• How can you and your organization strive for excellence instead of just quality?

poor guy he stil belive americans went to the moon. hahahah

— @gusino34

• Are you focusing on real skills?

• How can you make better processes in order to fail more efficiently?

How might the intrinsic properties of these biomass-derived carbon materials, such as their composition and structural features, be optimized through variations in the synthesis process to further enhance their performance as anode materials in energy storage devices?

Once it's possible then you can be responsible and once it's responsible you can build a process

Three mins in and this is a mess. He comes on, insults his audience (by asking where he is) and talks gibberish for the first 3 mins. Then he admits he has only ever done this presentation once before, says it's confusing and promises that it will all make sense soon. He couldn't even find a fresh title for the talk - leadership vs management was a novel idea 40 years ago, but now? 2/10, Seth.

This is really odd because I started in construction where management is the plumber giving someone a golden shower. And that actually works because now the people go in talking about how much money they're going to make and the system of going from apprentice to journeyman to master plumber. It's crap. You're working on making sure crap goes down hill. That's why they go nowhere and then they use illegals. And I don't think the manager even know what's going on because they're in an ivory tower. They just see the illegal group producing better numbers than the american group that they taught teamwork too. You're lying. You guys are doing it as a scam on the top. We need to break everything up.

What that is proforma analysis. That's the crap for borrowing the student loan. How many of those get paid back? Then they applied that to the 120 percent financing no doc stuff saying that you were going to make more in the future after you got your degree or gained experience. The government is forcing everyone to work for the banks and the banks are thieves.

That's exactly what they did. Ben Bernanke for example was just a professor that wrote the economics textbook. In that education business he learned how to finance or work with the student loans. Which is a fraudulent business because no one pays it back, and just inflated the price of education. Then they applied it to housing. Really it's all quackery.

Now I get because that's how they got everyone. It made sense to everyone and I was confused what in the hell are you talking about "I'm going to make more in the future." I didn't have a student loan I just wen to a cheaper community college first and then a state school. I think not to make more in the future but not be broke in the future. If you have to borrow more, you're going to make more and not keep it. you're working for shylocks. It doesn't even make sense. How are you going to make more in the future. You're going to be old and then dead. I don't want to make more in the future. I want you to make me something in the future.

I think there is a Statue of Responsibility. It's a statue in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William B. Travis. His role at the Alamo is the epitome of "responsibility". I read his Victory or Death letter nearly everyday to remind myself of what responsibility is suppose to look like.

Wrong!! School wasn't invented by industrialists a 100 years ago. In fact, the first university in the world was created in Morocco by a Muslim woman named Fatima al-Fihri. It's called the University of al-Qarawiyyin

Wow, it's either you don't start at all or just quit at the end. This is accountability and telling one to be conscious of what they sign up for because you owe it to yourself to show up for it.

Important topic, but the "vs." framing is misleading. True management isn't the opposite of leadership; it's the framework that requires it. Leadership is how you execute the human side of managing plans and teams. They're parts of one system, not rivals.

When things don't go as planned, that's when the tension between leadership and management really shines. When things are stable, efficiency wins. But when things aren't stable, leadership counts.

It's a very good point that greatness is different from quality. Quality has become so important that robots can do it for us. To be excellent, you need to have good judgment, good taste, and be ready to make decisions that aren't clear when there isn't a playbook.

I also like how "soft skills" are now seen as real skills. Automation can't do things like empathy, making decisions when you don't know what to do, or getting people to work together toward a goal.

Effectively failing feels like the thread that holds everything together here. Leaders don't get rid of failure; instead, they set up processes where people learn faster than things get broken. That's what makes companies move forward.

Thank you for this. In the high-stakes world of healthcare and organized leadership, the shift from managing processes to leading people is everything. When systems take over vision and culture suffers. Great leadership shows up when management fails to inspire. Here’s to making the difference that matters!
