Secretariat's record-breaking 1973 Kentucky Derby run (FULL RACE) | NBC Sports
Video Overview & Insights
Take a look back at Secretariat earning the first jewel of his Triple Crown run with a still-standing track record time on the 50th anniversary of his historic Kentucky Derby win. #NBCSports #HorseRacing #KentuckyDerby
Breaking the Derby record is a tribute to the quality field he beat. I think he throttled the horse down in the stretch, knowing there were 2 more races in just a few weeks. Perfect horse, perfect ride.

Some people believe war admiral was actually better

Imagine if he ran the rails maybe nock of 1 or 1/12 more seconds
@RDS60What a Godsend!!!!❤❤❤❤
@ladydi2086Big Red!!! Greatest horse ever!!
@PaulaKaminskeI remember watching horse racing growing up. I always liked Secretariat and Foolish Pleasure
@Anthony-g2zMy boy❤
@terriholley4555Check it: overcame a 4-lengrh (?) lead
@Jephro79Well, I’m disappointed that the movie was such a misrepresentation. It showed Secretariat winning by 15 lengths, so imagine my shock that he only won by two lengths.
@marysheffield7028Sham must have been an incredible horse born in the wrong year.
@christopherschleeper7186Isn’t there another horse named recently ‘twice a prince’?
@slowlybutshellyMY ALL-TIME FAVORITE HORSE
@ronhunt9396Sham would have set a new record too if not for Secretariat. It would have stood until 2001, according to Grok. Amazing stuff.
@nilsbrownmusic4507Secretariat's great. Another famous horse, Seabiscuit, was too old to compete for the Triple Crown by the time it developed into a great racehorse, although it beat several great horses in other races, including War Admiral.

That horse that got second was actually a beast in his own right he was right there with him until the last bit
@Crazyjedi2What a beautiful creature! ❤
@tanyav7888What a beautiful thing! And, as far as I could tell, the jockey never used his whip. Secretariat: A horse for the ages. And now his progeny comes through.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@harrietsmith9604Was this record set before they tested for performance drugs?
@samuelcuellar8699Love American Pharoah too !
@sabinadoughty9122Thank you for the magnificent race! Secretariat🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
@robertataylor4301Horse abuse
@bobbybalogne2565Real deal.
@Alan-v8rSecretariat was awesome!
@Sammy-k5z3hToo strong .... way too strong for em'
@markswain365Too bad he didn’t continue to race and was retired as a three year old. It would have been fun to see him race against the Mighty Forego as a four, five, and six year old.
@99somervilleLove watching Secretariat race!!
@PrayDatePossibly the greatest horse to have ever raced.
@MyDinkCanTalkAndItSaysI watched Secretariat win all three legs of racing’s Triple Crown and to this day it’s the greatest feat of athleticism I have ever seen.😮😊😅
@frankcoverjr.-jz3neSuch a bad assed horse
@apeman1300I watched this, and the rest of the Triple Crown, in real time. Words cannot express how it was when the world saw the first non-human super-athlete. Secretariat was a phenomenon that was indescribable---poetry in motion! Perfection in the flesh!
@miketranfaglia3986I was a thirteen yr old. As an inner city kid, I knew nothing about horse racing, but you knew about the greatness of Secretariat. Everyone was mesmerized by his performances.
@JW-do9wqLoved the content, keep it coming!
@FerewAyele-i3sGreatest athlete of ALL time !!! Wow
@rds990Greatest race horse ever.
@philipbassist8255Greatest racehorse of all time. Inspiring to watch.
@MatthewGubisch-o5zPoor Sham
@fjbxrploverI can't believe such a great artist jumped off a bridge
@Sinho_PombadasSham gave Secretariat all he wanted on that day... what a race!
@bucksdiaryfanImpressive
@ryanedwards4512Incredible horse
@waynealvarez6519That jockey on sham thought his horse was so fast he didn't have to hold them back even lengths ahead early on
@JoeBroughton-n3kThat sham horse may have been better then Secretariat had it been trained with it's jockey cause for a record sham was right there and he led the whole race even by lengths in the begining can you imagine had it been held back early on slightly
@JoeBroughton-n3kSecretariat is the GOAT!!
