Safari park by far the best. but that is all personal preference.. also im Bias as I did do tours for roar and snore at one point. The Zoo is fantastic but it just a zoo, although one of the best. Safari park is just something different. Also if you have the money and time def look into roar and snore. It is cool to get a wake up call from lion roars and cheaper than flying to Africa

@GarageCycling
@

There is zero tram line if you just wake your ass up and get there when the safari park opens. No line. Plus, more animal activities in the morning and the heat is not as bad.

As someone who has a bit of social anxiety in crowded areas (my eyes track everything that's moving, a sensory overload that take me out of the moment occasionally. which is also why i never go inside of an In-n-out anymore, its just pure chaos in there), the Wild Animal Park ;) is a much more relaxing experience than the Zoo. Yes it involves at least 5 miles of walking up and down hills...but the park is much more spaced out, the scenery is great, plenty of opportunities to not look so closely and stare out into the vast spaces to reset your eyes (if you know you know), and you have much more angles to view the beautiful animals. The Zoo you are often bunched up in a little crowd to get the right angle, but the Wild Animal Park gives you more freedom to choose from where you view the animals.

You can't overstate the difference in the weather. We go to the zoo during the summer temperature months (approximentally june through october) and and the safari park during the other months. The safari park is simply unbearably hot during the summer, we end up leaving before noon. Also I am pretty sure there are bears at the safari park, though probably not the type of bears that most people are looking for.

just visit both

The wild animal park from 20 years ago was the better back then. Now the zoo is better. I have been a member for over 50 years. I would take my kids 2 or 3 times a week(the wild animal park, i refuse to use that weak new name).

I grew up about a half hour from the safari park, which will always be wild animal park to me. We had annual passes for several years, and in the summers they had day camps, which were neat. The trams were after my time, but there was a neat monorail that went around the outside of some of the big enclosures. Some of the notable animals I remember from the park were the condors, meerkats, lorikeets, okapis, and white rhinos.

A lot of what made the WAP nice was that it was relatively unknown at the time. The tourists would go to the zoo, but the WAP was mostly visited by locals. The times my family would go to the actual zoo was when we had visitors in town, or to see the pandas. I doubt that’s still the case, especially after the rebrand.

Weather differences are actually quite big between regions in San Diego. Inland in the winter the Safari park get colder and rainier than the Zoo. In Spring you’ll get the famous California Marine Layer at the Zoo, but not at the Safari Park, so the Zoo will be cooler and wetter those days. Of course, hotter at the Safari Park in summer as you said, and in late Summer and during the Fall California weather can be pretty stable except that the Safari Park is far enough inland to get hit by the occasional monsoon. California monsoons are not nearly as frequent or intense as you get in deeper inland areas such as Phoenix though so it’s not too big a concern.

Nice report

At those prices, I think that you would want to spend the entire day at either park.

One of the things that contributes to a larger attendance at the zoo is the annual pass which is less than the cost of two daily admissions. A lot of the people living near Balboa park purchase the annual pass and visit for an hour or two several times a month

I was an annual member for several years. This video sounds correct from what I remember

Chris, is that San Diego safari park tram sort of like the tram in WDW animal kingdom safari ride?

@oriondivad
@

The Safari Park has a very different "vibe" than the zoo. I've never been there when it felt "crowded", while the zoo can be a zoo on weekends and holidays and, since you have to make an effort to get there, you tend to see a different kind of person at the Safari Park.

As for the heat in the summertime? Even if you're one of the people who isn't bothered by the heat, it makes for a less-than-ideal experience, since most of the animals are just hanging out in the shade trying to stay cool.

One clarification: the free tram at the Safari Park does not go INTO the habitats; it goes around and between them. If you want to actually get INTO the habitats, you have to spring for a "Wildlife Safari" where they take you into the habitat on a stakebed truck.

The zoo has a surprisingly large number of bird exhibits.

I miss the monorail.

My last trip we were staying in Oceanside, as this was a Legoland trip with 3 kids so the Safari park was what we did. The ticket prices were a bit of a shock, but honestly the zoo's ticket price would have been equally shocking I think. The Safari park was ok, the outdoor area gave me vibes of Disney World ride that did something similar. And we got to see how fast a cheetah could run, like actually see it run, and that was cool. But I think next time I could very easily skip the Safari park, where as if I was closer to downtown San Diego probably couldn't say I could easily skip the zoo, but it has been quite a few years since I went so yeah.

It will always be the Wild Animal Park to many long-time San Diego residents. :)
