Live action Moana suffers the usual errors studios make with franchises. The first and second made a bunch of money, so let's spend 60% more to make a third movie that won't make as much.
The Terminator franchise peaked with the second movie and box office fell off with each passing movie, but each was more expensive than the last. Until they lost money.
Transformers had a really good run, peaking with the 4th movie. Then the 6th cost 16% more than that one and made half the money. The 9th one lost buckets of money.
Indiana Jones was a money machine. Until they were stupid enough to drop over $400 million on Dial of Destiny and were not going to make that back. It pulled in $387 million, so if it had a more reasonable production budget of even $150 million, it would have made money.
By Moana 6, Maui will be voiced by Tim Allen and produced for $2 million.
