I only eat Faroe Island Salmon when possible. I've probably eaten Norwegian salmon and didn't know it, but that's just the nature of food at this point in history. Faroe Island salmon tends to be the best quality and cleanest possible farm raised salmon. Only beaten by wild caught salmon, where you actually gamble on parasite free. If I ever see "Norwegian farm raised" salmon, I always pass on and never buy. There's a lot of controversy over this topic, so don't flame me as a perfectionist or advocating for one company over another. My understanding may change as more data becomes available, but for the moment, Norwegian Salmon is not the absolute best choice - (definitely wouldn't eat it more than one or two meals a month).

Costco salmon is BBQ grade, not sushi grade fish. I wouldn't do them in sashimi but I'm very picky.
I suppose you could get away with it.

🍣 ABOUT

I’ve been unlucky in purchasing meat and fish from Trader Joe’s. I no longer will buy any unfrozen meats or fish there, too many stinky, spoiled experiences. I theorize that it’s because of the way they stock their shelves and/or no refrigeration between the delivery and getting it to the refrigerated displays. They bring stacks of boxes out onto the floor then their stockers leave it unrefrigerated for too long because they get dragged away by customers needing help…lived across the street from one for fifteen years and shopped there at least weekly, saw this happen many times. Anyone else experience buying spoiled meat from TJ’s?

Want to make sushi at home but not sure where to find quality sushi-grade fish? In this video, I compare fresh, raw salmon from three major retailers: Costco, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s, to find out which one is best for sushi and sashimi. I’ll break down the pricing, quality, and taste of each option to see which salmon comes out on top. By the end, you’ll know exactly where to shop for the best salmon so you can confidently make delicious sushi at home.

🍣 WHAT'S IN THIS VIDEO:

Not good advise! Farm-raised salmon is naturally gray. They are fed cheap pellet feed instead of Shrimp and Krill. Astaxanthin is added to the feed to make the flesh orange.
The color is an illusion, not a sign of health.

00:00 Intro

01:41 Quality Check

This is a great video.. I'd like to see them shifted around in different orders not knowing which was from what store and see if there was a consistent one that was a little bit better. That avoids the mind playing tricks on you with confirmation bias. For example you have A, B and C but not knowing which store they're from. And they're not telling the taster which one is A, B or C. Only that there are three different ones. Would the taster be able to match up consistently A being A on all three taste tests?

I was under the impression that it was unsafe to eat fish raw from supermarkets like this and it had to be sushi grade. Is that not the case? Does anyone have more information?

🍣 ABOUT THE SUSHI MAN:

Jun Nakajima, CHEF AND FOUNDER

That how I smell my wife 😂

— @perrocaliente9281

Raised in a restaurant household, Jun's love for food began at a very early age. His parents have owned and operated a Japanese restaurant for over 30 years where he practiced and honed his culinary skills.

Somewhat forced upon, he was taught the art of sushi making in his teenage years. He quickly fell in love not only with the art but the endless opportunities that came with it.

I don't buy the idea of using grocery store fish for sashimi because no grocery store will ever guarantee you that their fish is safe from cross-contamination through the knives or cutting boards. For sushi, it's better to buy a whole fish and fillet it yourself.

— @zakoh85

He has traveled around the globe to try different styles of sushi, most importantly to Japan.

After college, Jun had taken an opportunity to live in the motherland of sushi, working for something completely outside the culinary field. In those two years his appreciation of the culture, people, history and food deepened.

I read never buy Norwegian Farmed Salmon because the feed they use is all chemicals.

— @rockys7726

He became addicted to the food scene and found himself traveling from one end of the island to the other, eating and drinking some of the best foods and drinks he's ever had. This experience became the seed which eventually bloomed to become The Sushi Man.

Love how Whole Foods is 33% more than the others AND is skin on, making it more like 50%. Such a ripoff!

@PeterMoore-q5k
@

Wholefood wins because of the package size and more parts to cut.

@netseraph08
@

To be honest, Costco's salmon does not always pass the smell test, same with their pork ribs, among others (the worst was during 2021-2023, recently it was improving). Trader Joe's skin on salmon is cheaper at 9.99 though, which is a better deal for those who likes skin too.

@yunfanfan9452

Just wondering if Chilean sea bass from Costco can be sushi or sashimi, after watching your Costco salmon sashimi?

@KLeQ-ee3fm

what exactly are we looking for in a smell check?

@karen.johana

If you can find farm raised salmon from scottland, I would recommend over the norway counterpart.

@gogogacho
@

They all fail, they all are farmed, fish chow fed salmon.

@graphguy
@

hello, are you sure the trader joe's one is ok to eat? it says not for raw consumption on the package.

@peterparker6472
@

Thank you! I wonder, what are the odds that they all come from the same salmon farm in Norway?!

@IryBee
@

I didn't know that Costco's salmon could be eaten raw. I'm guessing it all depends when Costco gets the fish but am skeptical of trying it althougjh I buy and cook them all the time.

@VibeCuratorHQ

I can’t believe you trust the FDA!!

@galations22o
@

Which salmon do I buy from Costco: with antibiotics or regular?

@jaekim5397
@

I have seen enough eye-opening videos on the farmed salmon from Norway that I stopped eating salmon sushi. I have never seen wild salmon sushi even at fancy sushi restaurants. Way more nutritious wild salmon just doesn't have those appetizing white fat streaks and unnatural stained orange color that comes from being raised in a large net pond.

Whole Foods is just fresher. They get it every morning.

TJ’s salmon is super fishy. Costco is also hit or miss. I have found whole foods to be most consistently fresh

You just consume raw salmon from a big box store?!

@majordude
@

Same salmon from the same origin. Doesn’t matter who sells it, it’s the same product. It’s like test driving the same Toyota Camry from 3 different dealerships. Can you tell the difference? This video is such a waste of time both for the producer and the audience.

@lxu1711

If you are eating farm raised salmon, then you also wouldn't mind eating sewer rats. Much too filthy for human consumption.

Can you eat Costco salmon raw?? I thought it was not sashimi grade

@Soriyou3
@

lol my husband tried to give me salmon raw from costco, and i became violently ill the next few days.. dont do it...

@hanna4292
@

I remember it all said “previous frozen“ in all 3 stores.

@Steven27206

They are all perishable raw fish. Not a manufactured product. Every packaging could be different.

You are such a Dzaddy!

@Sofi-ji4jl
@

I’m surprised you didn’t mention one important fact when discussing the prices. The Whole Foods price includes the skin! Once you remove that, you have even less to eat. So their price is actually even higher

@robertedwards5456

I'm Japanese and live in NoCal. I always buy sashimi-grade salmon or tuna at Japanese supermarkets, which are not close to my house. Trader Joe's is near my house, so I definitely buy salmon from there and try sashimi! トレジョのサーモンが刺身として食べれるなんて驚き!素敵な情報ありがとう!
