Ranking Every Christopher Nolan Film

Video Overview & Insights

Every Christopher Nolan Film Ranked

Thanks!

— @ianreleford9067

Nolan Retrospective FINALE

Over the past few months, I've covered each film in Christopher Nolan's filmography. So, to cap off this retrospective series on his career, I figured I'd rank every Christopher Nolan movie. Of course this ranking is going to be subjective so we're going to disagree, and specifically with Nolan, there's plenty of room to do so. Let me know your own ranking in the comments, and subscribe for more content like this. These types of rankings will probably continue as I complete more review series. They're pretty fun to make. Thanks for watching.

Where would you place The Odyssey?

Next up is going to be a review on the 1982 film Blade Runner. If that sounds interesting to you, feel free to subscribe.

I’ve seen a few Nolan ranking videos and this is by far the closest to my own. The glaring difference is I’d have Oppenheimer as a clear no1, I believe this to be his absolute masterpiece. And I’m saying that 3 days after seeing the odyssey.
Great video.

The critiques of Batman begins makes literally no sense. And TDKR is way less flawed than you made it out to be. Easily in his top 5. Tenet is also a masterpiece, and should be in the top 3 imo

There's no justified ranking it's about
1) Concepts by Nolan - Prestige, Interstellar, Inception, Tenet, Memento
2) Concepts not by Nolan - Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Odessey, Dunkirk

I am with no. 1

Inception is undoubtedly my favorite. Funny enough interstellar is so hard for me to judge. I love it and see it as a masterpiece but the ending with the 5th dimension is difficult for me to get behind. But at its core the movie is a masterpiece. Deeply scientific yet themes rooted in abstract emotions (love). 2 opposite ends working together perfectly, backed by one of the best (maybe No.1) film scores ever made.

Solid director, one of cinema's only few new current directors worth mentioning. He only has 2 trash films and one weak one, so pretty good ratio if u ask me. Here's how i rank his films.

12. Following: TRASH
11. The Dark Knight Rises: TRASH
10. Tenent: WEAK
9. Batman Begins: GOOD
8. Dunkirk: GOOD
7. Insomnia: GREAT
6. The Prestige: GREAT
5. Interstellar: CLASSIC
4. Oppenheimer: CLASSIC
3. Inception: CLASSIC
2. The Dark Knight: CLASSIC
1. Memento: CLASSIC

No interest in his new movie though, that cast puts me off so i'll pass on Odyssey.

@Mysteriousgamer89-b6h

You're right! All of his works are so hard to rank in any order and neither is he hard to rank within the best of all movie makers as in directors, producers, etc. I'm simply thankful for the experiences that all these talented people gave to us.

With that said, I like to compliment you on a great video that surpasses the rest. ❤

I would only swap Oppenheimer for Inception. Inception's concept was ground-breaking, the construction of all the layers is astonishing and how it keeps you on the edge until the end and how it wraps around the beggining just does it for me. Oppenheimer is one of the greatest biopics ever but Inception still gets me more. And yeah, The Prestige is soooo underrated overall it's almost painfull.

Edit: I love Interstellar with all my heart. The only film, to this day, that when I went to see it on the theatre and it ended, I just stood there thinking "what did I just see?", totally awe struck. No other film ever did that to me. I just witnessed movie history.

Going along with the first 3 movies like "okay, I understand the ranking." Seeing Batman Begins like "okayy that's kinda low." Seeing Tenet like "oh God, I forgot about Tenet.. how the hell!?" 😂 Overall it's a very solid ranking, just Inception is pretty low. I know it's blasphemy to some, but for the life of me I just have no motivation to rewatch Oppenheimer to give it another chance.

Nolan movies do so much yapping instead of showing. Along with questionable audio mixing and abrupt editing, they often feel like a bunch of noise that looks like a movie but doesn’t feel like anything brilliant. They’re made for a massive, broad audience to have a decent time. If you want something boundary pushing, Nolan is not that guy. Competent? Sure. Crowd pleasing? Sure. But truly exciting? I don’t think so.

@martn_manhuntr
@

Sorry but IMHO Tenet is one of the worst expensive movies ever made. It's extremely complicated for nothing, I dislike the lead (he doesn't even have a name WTF), the color grading is ugly, the plot makes zero sense, it takes itself too seriously...

I watched interstellar for the first time with my wife when she was pregnant. When I watched it the second time I was already a parent. Could not hold back the tears when Murphy said "Because my daddy promised me". This movie definitely hits completely different when you are a parent. However, still Interstellar is 'only" on 3rd place on my Nolan list only topped by Inception and the dark knight

I think the top 3 i would re order...because i believe Oppenheimer to be one of the greatest pieces of cinema of all time...for the mere fact that im not sure any other director could execute that story line amd all the layers so comprehensively with such intensity.

Dark knight mos def...another perfect movie...

Yes,.imterstellar...probably competes with Inception for me...

@cedars18

I respect this list other than your ranking of Dunkirk. I think it’s a masterpiece. Tarantino himself also said it was the best film of the 2010s.

I can understand why some people overlook it. I was disappointed on my first viewing.

Firstly, I was expecting more of a strategy/action film. However, it’s a film about how war boils down to small acts of human bravery.

Secondly, I didn’t fully appreciate the mechanic where the film portrays the same events from three different perspectives (land, sea and air – reflecting the 3 arms of the military), but each is happening over a different span of time, and they culminate at the end.

I think a lot of people missed these things too so I really encourage you to rewatch it

But I was blown away after I watched it again.

The top seven are really hard. to rank. I’ve only seen Tenet and Interstellar once. I enjoyed Inception less each time I watched it whereas The Prestige is the opposite. The Dark Knight is technically more impressive than Batman Begins and Heath Ledger’s performance is one of the greatest acting performances I’ve ever witnessed, but the movie has a lot more bloat and pointless scenes whereas Batman Begins tells a perfect super hero narrative. Memento doesn’t need IMAX and huge action budgets to deliver its message: it’s the pinnacle of Nolan’s out-of-sequence story telling which I feel has become blasé by the time you get to movies like Oppenheimer, which I found very overrated.
