Race Footage: First Ever Monaco Grand Prix (1929) | Sporting History

Video Overview & Insights

Great footage of the first ever Monte Carlo Grand Prix. Organised in 1929 by Anthony Noghes, the race sees British driver William Grover-Williams driving a Bugatti 35B taking the title. He beat the great German driver, Rudolf Caracciola.

BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY

Why the stupid music?

— @atheist3765

Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.

Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.

Absoluty gold footage.

— @heian8868

The Monte Carlo circuit is still one of the most demanding and dangerous formula one circuits with its narrow streets, windy tunnel and tight corners around the city. The famous Monaco harbour has also played its role with a couple of drivers having crashed into the sea - the most famous being Alberto Ascari. Watch the newsreel about his death here: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/death-of-ascari/query/alberto+ascari

Absolutely beautiful, thank you for posting. I must say, it is things like this that sit in my head when they talk about taking it off the calendar. Some things are so unique that they simply can't be replaced. Thank you for this lovely reminder :)

St. Devote, beau rivage, the tunnel, the old chicane, tabac all still recognisable.

why does it look wider

The worst change to Monaco was getting rid of the hairpin. The double apex monstrosity we have now even removes a much needed overtaking opportunity.

Even in the old times Monaco was hard to overtake.

There is a statue of Grover Williams in Monaco, but ironically it is removed during racing as it's in the middle of St. Devote.

It's incredible as a new F1 fan that I can actually recognize this track. It looks very similar to how it looks now, just without all the safety equipment. Awesome footage.
