Pirate Expert Reviews Famous Pirates in Hollywood Movies

Video Overview & Insights

Iszi Lawrence, comedian, podcaster and history presenter rates more portrayals of famous pirates in Hollywood historical movies. Iszi has worked on the Netflix documentary 'The Lost Pirate Kingdom' and is the author of Blackbeard's Treasure, a tale set in the eighteenth century during the golden age of piracy in the Caribbean.

stopped watching after the first 90 seconds when she claimed that pirates were not hung in the carribean , when the vast majority of pirates captured in the region were indeed hung there , only in rare cases were they transported to england etc for execution , do better history hit , do better 🤦‍♂

— @saor4340

Iszi first reviews scenes from 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' (2007), where she talks about the legend of the 'Pirate Code' and how much truth there is behind it.

She then moves onto the next film in the franchise 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' (2011) where she takes slight issue with Ian McShane's depiction of Edward Teach aka 'Blackbeard', who would have been 35 years old when he died, despite the actor in question being almost 70 at the time of filming.

Why does noble 6 not wear shoulder armour?

— @Jdayum

The next film Iszi reviews is 'The Black Swan' (1942) in which Laird Cregar depicts infamous pirate captain and later Governor of Jamaica, Henry Morgan.

Finally, Iszi rates the classic film 'Sea Hawk' (1940) starring Errol Flynn as an English privateer, loosely based on Sir Francis Drake, who defends his nation's interests on the eve of the launch of the Spanish Armada. How accurate is Flora Robson's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I?

Villanueva looks like my uncle 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Pretty sure pirates of the Caribbean wasn't going for historical accuracy and was going for more of the pirate life and myth/ legends

I have trouble with anyone trying to review movies like Pirates of the Caribbean for historical accuracy.

Making motherhood sound like the worst thing ever is an incredibly idiotic take.

Why are they calling the queen “Your Grace”? The correct form is “Your Majesty”. “Your Grace” is for Dukes and Duchesses.

Actually the British didn’t mind pirates till they attacked British navy they were useful wen they attacked the Spanish

That explains the pirate hunters hoisting the red flags.

When she mentioned female pirates I was really hoping she would have said the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley. It’s nice to hear my family lineage brought up in this type of conversation.

@devdog99

Do we really need to spend time pointing out that rigging coming to life or magic pirate-killing potions aren't accurate? C'mon.

Does she know this is a fictional movie ?

Its a small group of pirates..of course they can split the goods lol. As if their sample size makes sense on a country size level. "They were ahead of their time and better"

It was a fact that Keith Richards did attend the Pirate council 300 years ago

All the stuff you were saying about At World's End (especially the opening scene: have you ever even seen the movies? Yes, you're right that most of these things wouldn't happen like this but the entire previous movie explains exactly why these things are happening the way they are here. Also, On Stranger Tides is depicting Black Beard much later in his life than most media that he's featured in does. Matter of fact, at this point most people (including Jack and Barbossa) assumed he was dead. In this lore, his death at 38 was an untrue rumor. And his purpose in the story is that he wants to find the Fountain of Youth because he's dying.

Americans were so sick of England we didn't even want to hang people the same way

They're movies. Not documentaries.

Do you have any other qualifications other than you write childrens books about pirates? That doesnt make you an expert on anything.

About Ian Shane as Blackbeard, of course the actor is old, but back in the glory days of pirates they got a lot of us no doubt. A man in his 30’s may very well have looked 50 or 60.

MAD respect for the way she starts by saying “whether I think that these pirates are accurate or not”

Straight coming off as humble and intellectual in her approach

I would suspect, Black Beard would hide his family's to protect them and himself.

Doing the math, Blackbeard being alive in On Stranger Tides would've meant he was in his 60s-70s. Yeah he old af lmao

Who knew that a Disney film wouldn’t be historically correct? The entertainment industry is failing us as a history teacher. They probably hired a children’s book author to authenticate the facts for them.

@HoldFastAndStoic

Spain wasn’t getting gold from the Americas. They were plundering it and sending it back to their country and killing the native people that lived in those areas.

The haircut is a HUGE red flag that this person will slant history to make women and gays the creators of everything. Prove me wrong.

Does anybody think for one second this lady’s view of history isnt biased?

@dudeman5504

What's this childish feminist commentary? Disparaging women for contributing to stable society and having descendants, calling piracy "more fun"? Plenty of women love their families, children and homes. Aside from being a crime, being a pirate wasn't "fun." Also, very few women can just dress up as a man and pass. Most women can't look like a man, let alone sound or walk like one, or lift as much weight, or fight as well. If there were more female pirates, we'd know about them.

@SalvableRuin

Pirates are not HANGED in the Caribbean. Not "hung."

@SalvableRuin

If it was egalitarian, why would anyone want to be captain?
