Those who only watched the movies of for example Persona 3 will never understand how shocking it was to see Aigis slowly turn in to a sentient being like a human specially during the combat, she goes from giving status reporst every time she get criticals or get taken down to literally scream in pain like a human would 😮

One of the most frustrating parts of the persona community is the weird aversion to playing the games. One of the most popular inside jokes in the community is that “Persona fans don’t play their own games,” though slowly this has gone from a punchline to a mantra that’s being upheld. I’m certainly not the first person to notice this, but it’s a trend that I've seen become more common as time goes on. While it’s easy to point and laugh at these people, lately I’ve been wondering the reason WHY this option is so appealing. If you’re watching this video, then there’s a very high chance that you view video games as art. One of the most important parts of video games is their level of interaction, and Persona is no exception. Interaction and player participation is the sauce that gives this medium its unique flavour, but lately, it seems as though people are allergic to this secret ingredient. This topic has been on my mind for a long time, and because of the recent trailers for Persona 4 revival, I figured it was time to put them into words. This video isn’t about shaming people, rather I want to understand why people experience persona like this, what exactly they’re missing out on, and most importantly, how we can get these people to overcome whatever hurdle is stopping them.
I admit to watching the games since I was interested in understanding why they were good. I'm just not as much of a fan of the deadline feeling and day to day management aspects. I really just want to go do the dungeon and fight some guys
If you want to stop larping as a persona, then you came to the right place.
Persona's larping problem. Persona is a video game franchise loved by millions. Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 are among some of the most recognized and loved JRPG's in recent years. While games like Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 4 Revival, and Persona 5 Royal have a lot of fans, there's a strange subset that haven't played the games despite what they've seen. A big problem with the Persona community is The Persona Community's Larping Problem. This has been an issue for the past few years, but it's been getting worse lately. Larping Persona means that instead of playing Persona 3, Persona 4, or Persona 5 yourself, you end up watching Persona Let's Play instead. While this is a good way to get an impression of Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5, it's far from the best way to experience these games. In this Persona's Larping Problem video, I will be going over why Persona Larping is so popular and what exactly these people are missing out on by not playing Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 themselves. This video will act as a guide for How to Get Into Persona while also debunking the most common talking points against Persona's gameplay. Persona's Larping Problem is the opinion of Nam's Compendium and doesn't represent the fanbase on the whole. Ultimately, I want people to play Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 the way they were meant to, as it's the best way to experience Persona
"I don't like turn based combat" aka "I am a coward who is afraid of stepping outside my comfort zone"
More User Perspectives
i (kind of, not entirely) blame super smash bros ultimate in terms of the massive western exposure from that reveal -- like, going from playing as joker in a real time platform fighter alongside mario and sonic where you just run around and beat up stuff casually for two minutes, and then going to a turn based 100 hour JRPG
@SonOfSparda07the main reason is that they just hate videogames but still want to be a part of a community.
@deadweight73346:56 man world ends with you was such a sick game. Did ruin my ds bottom screen though haha
@huckfinn4686The modern games literally have a story/safe difficulty that makes it impossible to lose in combat. There’s no excuse even if you're genuinely terrible at turn based RPGs and menu management.
@RezRakerMy favorite part is these same people are so exclusionary of others playing the games or having different opinions on them.
They got mad at The Weeknd for playing Persona and getting to play or see Persona 6 early 😭 like why do you care people are having fun with the series? I noticed this as Persona 5 became more popular after its release, been just getting worse every year
I need to know is someone who played persona 5 on safety difficulty also a larper? Because you are just pressing attack until the guy dies, no need to even manage SP because you just replenish it all when joker dies.
because if playing on safety difficulty makes you a larper for not really engaging the gameplay that would mean that even if you play persona 5 you can still play it wrong in the eyes of fans.
in short who cares, let people enjoy how they enjoy their media
I was one of these people, I only ever watched JohneAwesome play through P5 and P5R. Then last December, I finally actually played P5R... and I now have about 400 hours in the game lmao
Edit: I didn't play it simply because I had wayyyyyy too many games I was trying to play and actively on my backlog, and Persona is a pretty easy game to watch in the background as I worked. I just finally got through the majority of my backlog, so I took the dive and loved it.
They see me larping....... they hatin
checking the tl tryna catch me larpin dirty
ok i'll stop that was cringe sorry
Posers have always existed. People wear Rolling Stones t shirts without even knowing that it’s the band’s logo or saying how much they like Kurt Cobain and they have only listened to one or two Nirvana songs.
@hydrogensnake12This is every game now, so much of the discourse is dominated by terminally online losers whose primary hobby is social media and so can’t even be arsed to actually engage with anything despite being unemployed.
@Dram1984NOOOO DONT PUT EASY, DONT WIMP OUT!!
@flamehiroKinda curious how you know if they played
@flamehiroAs someone with 20/200 vision acuity, emulation via PC is your friend. Get a friend to assist in setting up the software side of things, and go for it. Use whatever adaptive tech (hardware or software) you need.
@Scout-FanfictionI'm convinced these people are just kids because then I'd understand. I don't really watch playthroughs anymore but I used to love them as a kid. I would say I know the game or i'm interested in it but I would never say it's one of my favourites or something like that if I hadn't properly played it. I only have a problem with the extremes. All the playthroughs I watched, I eventually played those games because that's what I wanted to do and they were completely different experiences. Consoles are expensive and exclusives used to be a bigger deal. I think it's kinda okay to call yourself a fan but I wouldn't say it makes sense to act like you know everything about it or it's your favourite game because you haven't experienced it.
@MK_Mike203on the subject of people having Pokemon as their impression of turn-based RPGs, I think many are unaware that those games are intended to be a kid's first introduction to the genre, it doesn't get much more basic than that combat system
@massiviveWake up get up Larp out there
@prettyoriginalnameprettyor7506Persona is my favorite game, I can’t wait to play it
@ipat202Accessibility is a terrible excuse. These people pay $10 bucks to eat at McDs every week but can't bother to save to play something that was handcrafted by artists? Persona games are always on sale too. No excuse
@matten_zeroP3P was my first persona game on psp back in 2010 and boy it did took years before I could properly play P3fes because I have a really crap hardware until I got a pc in 2016 to emulate p3fes, and then by 2019 I had to get a vita just so I could play P4G, then eventually got into P5R via pc port in late 2022. So I still had the means to play these games with the intention of wanting to get immersed into playing the game
Idk how the new generation of persona fans just loves the idea of watching = fan but not even play the games so in reality they are just bystanders trying to fit in to look cool and engage even when they only just watched it
Persona.. or any game for the matter has no place for larpers.
@KChronoI genuinely hate the overuse of the L word
@liminalbitPlayed through 90% of 5 then switched to Royal and finished it with my Fiancée. Took over 120 hours but we adore it.
@Trinket_Masterfor the longest time i couldnt really enjoy p5 despite loving it was bc it costs so fucking much
@caoinhnamkhanh2795this is going to be a problem when people have complaints about changes in revival and people who never played P4 will tell you to stop complaining because you are dissing their favorite game of which they will not play
@DrRyan82994not persona but I've seen sooooo many dmc larper it's fuckin crazy...
@sylnz97In my experience:
I played P4 Golden, dropped it, then found someone who finished it while entertaining me. (EditLthis was on the vita)
I played P5, dropped it, then did the same. (Edit:PS4, on release date)
and these were good experiences and was time well spent.
as for reason why - it's simple.
So simple as the gameplay in Persona is, which turned into boredom.
and the reason for that is because I played a lot of Jagged Alliance 2, one of the most complex and player choice games.
edit 2: No wonder people choose to watch it, because it's piss easy, there's no real challenge to it, the story is the same to everyone, unless RNG is considered as one, and buffing the enemies life doesn't add complexity, your options remains the same.
LARPSONA!
@awanama4565Well I was seeing ppl talk about this game non stop so I wanted to watch videos to see what the hype is about And get understanding on the game before I play but then I was like still indecisive so I kept watching videos to see if I’d enjoy it enough to want to play it
@em0cha0xd23Go on then, have a larp.
@thecousinbellicI came in so ready to start swinging. Royal will always be the inferior version of 5 and I don't need to play it to know that. Tae is bae and how dare you recast her, atlus you feckless cucks. (This comment is a semi tongue in cheek critique of atlus and their obsessions with rerelease-chan. I am so fucking sick buying each game twice just to have the second buy have an additional story that undermines the message of the original. The answer, femc and Alex really embody this point, but royal bonus content looks like a waste of time at best, which is still a step up from femc but still...).
That said I actually have nothing to disagree with on this video. Nice.
Never made available?
EVERY game prior to P5 were available on Vita when P5 came out.
"Just play this 100 hour RPG with many different outcomes and cutscenes depending on how you play" yeah uhh no thanks i have a life
@DeltabolsterPeople forget they can like things without being completely knowledgeable. I like Persona 5 a lot, but it’s been so long since I played it and even then I only got to unlocking Makoto. I intend on replaying it from the start and finishing it, but atp I don’t really interact with any persona circles since I don’t have the knowledge and that’s ok. You don’t have to pretend like you know everything to be interested in something, but posers just missed that memo somehow
@domncena77even following a guide from A to Z is better to not play the game
@mikimiki5841I really like the persona games but I'm also on the other side of the fence. I've played every persona game apart from the first one. And outside of the second game and persona 4 Golden, I did not complete the other games. I really liked both P3 and p5 but there was just too much content and not only did both games start to drag, they also gave me decision paralysis in some moments. It's hard for me to justify sinking 100 hours into a game when I'm working adult. With P3 reloaded, I tried to follow a walkthrough thinking that that might simplify things a bit but it made it even worse. The social aspects felt like chores rather than interesting elements and everything just kind of felt like a checklist. I ended up dropping that game halfway through. I might try it again at some point but it's really hard to for me to get back into it.
With p5 royal it felt really bad that I would often complete the dungeons in one day, and then I would just have social interaction for the rest of the month with no active gameplay. When I played Golden on my Vita, it took multiple days to complete each of dungeons which made the game feel much more varied. I didn't mind the little padding interactions and mini games as much when I had the ability to just go back into a dungeon when I wanted to. In P5, they almost encourage you to complete each dungeon in one or two days with how tight to time management becomes. I do hope the rumors are true that they plan to simplify these games a little bit for persona 6. I love the cutscenes where you're actually interacting with the side characters, but then there are tasks that just feel like they are padding or a checklist like going to a restaurant to eat a burger or doing some random thing just to get a stat up.
Maybe it's a matter of not having immersion but I can only watch my character do the same animation so many times before I kind of drives me insane.
LARPing is a huge problem in this fanbase, even among people who have played the games. The fact that players who would say Persona 4 is their favorite game in the series haven’t actually played Persona 4 is disappointing to me. While P4G isn’t a bad game, it is a fundamentally distinct (and in my opinion inferior) experience when compared to Persona 4.
@obviobviI think my biggest issue with these larpers is that they dont even buy or play the games yet have the loudest opinions in what should be in persona which pisses me off, plus most of them skip most of the story and then make up bs about characters and such. If you dont have any of the games or have never played them, then you need to shut the hell up once in a while. It sucks because i try to put my friends on persona and the jackasses who dont even touch the games say the weirdest stuff about it ruining it for others. Its like that one my hero academia situation where everyone thought the anime was ahh when it was just the fanbase or stranger things.
@Diamond-eq2hjI've had much the same experience talking to 'fans' of Fire Emblem.
Three Houses was the last one where there was a huge uproar about which route is the "most correct" route, where it felt like one side were entirely basing their choice on the fan art and fan fictions and character designs, and the other was talking about events in the games themselves, which made it really difficult to have a conversation in the first place.
Now the upcoming game seems to be a sequel to three houses, so it'll be interesting to see what the discourse will be around that.
I'm in a weird place right now when it comes to playing persona have 3 portable 4 golden and 5 royal on console and I have played them. only for a bit and I don't really remember how far I got on 3&4 I only remember 5 and that I stopped on the second palace witch maybe is due to the fact I don't play console much if at all anymore and also the fact with 5 I tried to do a max all social links run as my first run (with that maxing the links part I was biting off WAY more than I could chew in one of my biggest moments of hubris i have ever had)
@zEr-ne5riReally hate this new wave of tourists who aren't even aware they made animes and mangas and movies about persona you can be a fan without being a sweaty tryhard who grinds for hundreds of hours to see number go up
@saysallawtf am I hearing
@wielkuThank god idk who tf Nyx is but thanks for showing the final boss, totally not a spoiler.
@Ital890Another larping in the night
Lemme watch the playthrough
Basing my opinions over the general consensus
For every moment larped with you
Not engaging with the medium as intended
But never fully not engaging in discourses surrounding the game
Going to claim I'm poor and try to justify the fact I'm using disabilities as a shield to make a claim that could also be said for watching a playthrough (geniuely you guys have no excuse)
Until I'm accepted in the fandom as a passive consumer 🥹✌️
I get what you're saying, but in my opinion, I don't think any amount of lowering the difficulty and all that is going to change anything because they already don't like the genre. When I see people who don't like JRPGs play JRPGs, typically it's because those games have other systems that give it a bit more action. Like Expedition 33, or the Mario RPG games. I honestly don't think any amount of easing or dangling keys (flashy moments) is gonna get people to play.
Larping is annoying, but I feel there's not much we can do.
I picked up P3 fes ages ago at gamestop. Just thought the case looked cool and it was 12 bucks, even got 30 bucks for it when I finally traded it in to buy 4. I've played ever atlus smt persona styled game since. Even got my brother hooked into the series. If I'd had just watched it I doubt I'd have been as invested.
@Demon_TiemWhen i first played persona I always struggled with playing since my friend was one of those people who always has to do everything right or perfectly, so id be playing and theyd be constantly backseating, to the point where when i played alone, i even fell into the habit of needing to lookup what the best thing to do each day is, or those daily guides to be the most optimal. Each day would start with me just sitting there looking up what i could do and it felt more like a chore.
3 reload was the first game i just played on my own terms and had a blast. I respect wanting to break the game by being broken and doing everything perfectly like my friend but its just not for me
