Our Big Monthly Supermarket Haul | Frugal Living in France
Video Overview & Insights
Join us for our big monthly supermarket haul as we stock up on food and household essentials while living a frugal life in France. We carefully plan our shopping, compare prices, and look for the very best bargains to stretch our budget as far as possible. This monthly shop tops up our pantry, freezer and cupboards, helping us avoid expensive impulse purchases throughout the month. If you're looking for practical money-saving tips, budget shopping ideas, and realistic frugal living inspiration, come along and see exactly what we bought, how much we spent, and how we're making our budget work in 2026.
Do you find that buying frozen mushrooms, onions, and potatoes are less expensive than buying fresh and cutting it yourself (and freezing it to make it last the month) where you live? Not a criticism at all. But I wonder if having someone else do the processing is added to the cost or is there a volume / convenience savings where you live for these items.

We have a dinner plan for 6 weeks. I know what's coming up and I'm able to buy in bulk to provide the main protein ie chicken, sausages, mince and fish. With prices rocketing, I keep an eye open for good offers.
We don't buy beef or lamb now.

You have such good prices, imho. ❤❤❤ the salmon. That would maybe give me 10 portions for Fish Friday! I could eat it every day. 😋 😊🌻

Great haul- you are so smart to pick up the beef burgers at that price. Your prices seem reasonable (for the times) I find the produce here (MN in USA) also poor quality . Even potatoes are not looking good. I'm planning to shop framers markets for veg this month.

Another great video but the best and funniest you said was "If I was to tell you fruit/veg from the store was a pile of rubbish, I would've been paying it a compliment. I had to watch that 3x. LOLOL Here in the states fruit/veg have no flavor. It is rather sad. I get they have to pick things so early to get it to the store but it just takes all the flavor away. We are the same type of household. Beer is spread out thru the month and I read how chips per serving and divide them up that way. Mixed nuts we love and on the container service size is 1/4 cup. So I leave a measuring cup in the container and that is what we eat and are able to make it stretch. Before we would grab a hand full and that was beyond the 1/4 cup. Would love to see some video on the grocery store produce section to see how little you have due to the heat there. Have prices also risen? I would assume so.

This year in the heat I’m doing quite well with the salad leaves, tomatoes and things like courgettes and herbs which I am growing in pots - just watering them well and being careful about where they are positioned so that they are not in full sun for the whole day. One way of getting some fresh veg in my diet.

I have started going to Lidl again. No music on and just get the shop done ✅😊❤

Watching the video for the second time - just try buying that lot in Australia for that price!
$310 more likely closer to over $400 AUD.
The majority of Oz people cannot afford the best so now the major supermarkets are bringing in store brand. Cheaper but much lower quality and quite a lot of additives.
Would like to be able to purchase the burgers/beef patties- very easy and tasty with an egg on top and frites.
Yes, a very good and informative video 🇦🇺☕️🐾
The fruit and veg in the states lately has been rubbish as well. I go to the farmers market in the summer and pay a little more but I see it as cost effective because it lasts longer.
@stephaniet9264Great price for the Norwegian salmon. I wish we could get those steak 'hache' things here, minced beef is getting SO expensive. And i really admore your self discipline ... if I opened those crisps, that would be the ned of it ! xxx
@frugalgrannyukI love those huge tomatoes…..they look really inviting. Tomatoes on toast would a lovely meal for me !😊
@penelopechamberlain1822the salmon looked lovely ☺️
@christinerose9648I think you did really well for your money. Some people may think you're buying lesser quality food but the ingredients are cleaner than here in the UK, most cheaper foods are full of fillers, chemicals etc. You got a real bargain with the salmon, the equivalent in supermarkets near me is between £30-£35 for those sizes, so that was fantastic.
@Divergent1111My mother and I used to roast a beef roast with a pork roast, together. It made the best gravy. I always add a little ground pork to ground beef when I make meatloaf. The combination is so delicious. I bet the ground meat and pork sausage mix you bought is delicious. The heat hit growing things hard here in Michigan, too. It was cheaper to buy a big bag of frozen organic strawberries than it was to buy a flat of fresh berries plus farmers were really limiting the number of people, and the times, they would let into their fields. Your grocery hauls and menus always seem to be pretty well balanced. I would say you do pretty well on a low budget.
@johnmelissaziech6207❤
@peppypexJane i hyped before even watching the video because I knew it was going to be brilliant, always is And it was. I watch and it amazes me the amount you so carefully get, and turn out beautiful meals from it.
I'm thankful that you both work hard to do this, and bring it with love and big smiles. Appreciate you both so much.❤❤
Hi Jane. Just wondering. Before you do your monthly shop have you worked out your meals for the month and shop accordingly or do you just shop and then make up meals around what you bought
@ChrissyS1963Just hyped jane and mike because you are both lovely and brilliant to watch ❤❤
@TamsieBingham£160 for the month for all that is fantastic in the current environment. Ingenious to use the beef burgers as mince. Makes me chuckle that the French cheap ham is from the shoulder, in the UK cheap ham would be all MRM / mechanically recovered meat 😂
@helenhood5020You rule Queen Frugal! I'm not going to comment any longer on YouTubers who don't answer. It's only yourself, a man who is travelling around Asia like a funny Robin Hood and an American lady, doing a low budget beauty products, who answers now. Oh yes and a man called Tony Glass and a lady called Zoe. Money seems to distort most people.I will watch this vlog later as I need to pick up a prescription.Take care Jane. You are so thoughtful. Bless you. 😊❤
@Beth-j4r4wYou did well with your shop Jayne and Mike
@lenaharden5486I didn't know you could feeze mushrooms. How do they turn out?
@niclouholI was shocked to pay AUD$12 for 500gms of beef mince (95/5 lean) which is equal to €7.31. This is the best supermarket mince you can buy. A higher fat content makes it cheaper. Mince used to make a cheap meal - not any more!
@joolzmac1Awsome ❤
@tracycreaser4462I love shopping at Lidl in UK. Their bakery is amazing ❤
@jaynecatherineepinkett3454❤
@shellymacchi1900I love your grocery hauls. I wish the food in the U.S. were as clean s it is in Europe. When you read the ingredients of your meats and cheese it's just a few ingredients. When I read ingredients of our products, there are ingredients that I don't know what it is or how to pronounce it. We pay about the same price for cheese and butter when we have sales. We don't have frozen mushrooms and frozen onions in my state.😔
@kakelingaI think you have done very well. Wouldn't it be lovely to buy top quality but, like you, we have had to change what we buy because food is now so expensive and our budget will only stretch so far. We are finding the same here in the Uk regarding fresh produce. We have more choice, at the moment anyway, but the quality is awful for some things and it does not last very long. I refuse to buy it! We are having temperatures over 30 degrees which is clearly causing problems.
@TeresaJackson-iz5goAs always , amazing haul!
@TurboButtons28Thank you both xx
@TracyOwen-y9tYou often mention - we don't eat out, we don't travel or participate in costly happenings (my words). I often wonder, do we have to go out to eat, buy expensive coffees and so one. I for my self like the frugal food I make, from scratch and so do the people around me, I don't have a need to go out. I really enjoy the life around me, work in the garden, more, learn myself how to make a garden, read, bake, hike, enjoy the calmness and so one, ordinary things. I don't have a desire, or longin to travel. I don't have a need to participate in concerts, exhibitions or happenings. I think, the thing is to enjoy the frugal life, in a way make it a hobby. When younger, there were a group of friends having a club with three other couples, eight persons. They had everyone in turn make a three course dinner for 20 Finnish marks, for all in the group! When euro came, 20euros for eight persons. It was a challenge. All the stapels they had at home, could be used, like olive oil, spices, flour and so on, was not included, counted in the 20 euros. But they were happy innovative guys. This is reality for most of us and I think about, how make the everyday life,, more interesting and fun in our thoughts and inner world.
@AnnavonBruunGroceries are so high these days. I hyped your video
@RosieLindley-s1tYou did good with your shopping! Tomorrow, Saturday, is my batch cooking day: spinach feta egg casserole, banana bread, flatbread pizza, and perhaps some turkey chili. I think zucchini bread too—but I use cake mix as a shortcut. I might grab a rotisserie chicken at Costco for dinner. Stay cool!
@roseanndivincenzoOverall, your prices seem much lower than ours, here. USA.
@jonnaborosky8836Nice looking salmon filets. I.can't get over your food prices... about half of my.costs in East Texas! Produce at the grocery today looked gorgeous but it was expensive.
@lynnallen1315I love this grocery haul video because it demonstrates that you walk your talk. You have a budget for groceries and you stay within it and you model the hard choices that people have to make when shopping for groceries. Buying the food you can afford is certainly different than buying the food that you want. Thanks for sharing!
@stars2244Hi Thanks for the video Jane and Mike. I am lucky to have a vegetable garden here in NZ which is helping keep some of our grocery shopping down.
@JanetLowe-t4bIn the US, our produce is rubbish right now also. We had the heat wave just as you were finishing yours, although on Monday our heat wave will be back. Planning on making a lot of salads and cool weather meals, or putting things in the air fryer or the crockpot. What a year it's been weatherwise. The idea of beer and crisps sounds delicious and very cooling. A burger with it would be grand too.
@Sally-wm5jhHere in small town Canada, at our local market it's not the cheapest place to buy but I want to shop local and keep them in business close to us. Some of the prices are as follows......
Greek yogurt 2% is $6.99
Sealtest 2% cottage cheese $4.99
Small bag of grapes $10.36
Celery $3.99
Their Bakery pack of oatmeal cookies $7.99.
In this order we had 13 items for $80.69.
Superstore is not much better and the produce was not the freshest.
Your monthly budget and shopping hauls are my favorites. Thank you 😊
@laurajohnson8898❤❤❤ I really appreciate your food haul videos and admire your shopping savvy. It just emphasizes how much more our groceries cost in Canada even though we buy the no name store brands at the cheapest stores wherever possible. It’s mainly because of price gouging and the great distances travelled, at today’s fuel prices, to supply the food shops..
We are fortunate enough to live in a fruit and vegetable growing region where we get very fresh products locally in summer but the prices are not necessarily cheaper than at the grocers’. Local orchard fruits are sold as quickly as they are brought out to the stands at our nearest farm market. It’s so hot here, that we have to travel with a cooler to keep everything from wilting before we get home. However, we haven’t bought our local field lettuces because they have not looked great lately and so we focus on slaws made from other veggies or look for greenhouse deals. At the grocery store, one romaine heart works out to $2 CAD (1.24 euro) this week but you have to buy a pack of six for $12 CAD to get that price. Who has fridge space for that? LOL. We prefer to support local businesses and food producers as much as possible and are avoiding imports except for certain Mexican products that we can’t grow here.
It seems like the harder we try to save money, the worse it gets. We have recently had lots of visitors which has really pushed us way past our food budget. However, our PM is working on greater food security initiatives that should help to improve things but it will take some time before we are less reliant on imports.
As a side note, many of our (elderly) friends have moved or passed away, sadly, and the cost of entertaining is expected to decrease as a result. I have mixed feelings about that so I can appreciate that you don’t socialize and we may be following your lead in future. Thank you so much for your content.
I don't like that you get so many negative comments. I am constantly impressed by the healthy meals you make while staying on budget. You get loads of veggies - I just don't understand why people need to criticize. Also, I'm also a homebody. I enjoy doing creative things at home (your quilts are fabulous) - and people who criticize that don't understand that for some people that is a preferred way to live. I don't feel I'm missing out on a thing. Hi to your pups!
