One Tool SURVIVAL! No Fire Starters Needed! Shelter & Fire
Video Overview & Insights
Jason Salyer with ON3 Survival and Preparedness heads deep into the North Georgia appalachian wilderness to answer one question: Can you survive in the wild with only one tool?
In this machete survival challenge, I build a bushcraft survival shelter using nothing but a survival machete and natural materials found in the forest. No tent. No tarp. No modern camping gear. Just one cutting tool, practical knowledge, and decades of wilderness experience.
A quality machete is one of the most versatile survival tools ever made. It can build shelters, split wood, process firewood, make feather sticks, clear trails, prepare food, craft tools, harvest natural materials, and perform dozens of wilderness survival tasks. If I could carry only one large cutting tool into the backcountry, a survival machete would be one of my top choices.
In this video I construct a simple bamboo lean-to survival shelter, one of the best beginner bushcraft shelters because it is fast to build, requires very few tools, and provides excellent protection from rain and the elements during short-term wilderness survival situations.
I also demonstrate one of my favorite primitive fire-starting methods, the bamboo fire saw. After years of testing friction fire techniques, I have found the bamboo fire saw to be one of the fastest and most reliable primitive fire methods whenever quality bamboo is available. Special thanks to Alan Kay for teaching me this incredible survival skill.
The bamboo featured in this video grows throughout parts of North Georgia and provides outstanding natural material for survival shelters, primitive fire making, camp tools, cooking, containers, traps, and countless bushcraft projects.

What is the best survival tool?
Many experienced survival instructors consider a quality machete one of the most versatile tools because it can build shelters, process wood, prepare tinder, clear vegetation, craft tools, and perform many camp tasks.
Can you survive with only a machete?
Yes. With the proper skills, a machete can be used for shelter building, fire preparation, food processing, trail clearing, tool making, and many other essential wilderness survival tasks.
What is the best machete for survival?
The best survival machete is one that is durable, holds an edge well, feels comfortable in your hand, and matches the type of environment where you'll be using it.
Can a machete replace a survival knife?
A machete can perform many of the same tasks while also excelling at chopping and clearing vegetation. Many outdoorsmen carry both, but a machete alone is capable of handling most wilderness survival tasks.
What is the easiest survival shelter to build?
A lean-to shelter is one of the simplest and most effective emergency shelters because it can be built quickly using natural materials.
What is the bamboo fire saw?
The bamboo fire saw is a primitive friction fire technique that creates an ember by rapidly sawing dry bamboo against another piece of bamboo. It has become one of my favorite primitive fire methods after years of testing.
