One of the WEIRDEST!

Video Overview & Insights

On this episode of Weird Movies With Mark, I talk about Spookies (1986)!

"Yeah, I'm going nuts 'cause I gotta stand here and listen to you!"

The boomers and silent generation movie makers were really trying to freak kids out purposely.

If I recall correctly, killing children in films was considered an extremely taboo subject for a while, pretty sure it was outright banned under the Hays Code. When it became possible to depict the killing of children on screen it was considered an extreme shock, unsurprisingly that shock was quickly cheapened by a large amount of movies using it.

4:49 I have a theory. People knew kids would be sneaking that VHS in late at night, when the parents were asleep or not at home, the perfect setting to scaring the shit out of them. Like Dan Cummins and the toy clown. ๐Ÿ˜‚

19:00 fun fact, the producers of this fine film originally asked Madonna to be cast as the zombie bride.
Somehow she turned them down, BUT only because she was working on the music videos of her new album.
Her appearance in this film would have either destroyed her emerging career OR made the film into a cult classic.

I ran away from home once when I was a kid. I wasn't angry or anything. I just felt like it was something you should do at least once. So I ran away. And by "run away", I mean I walked to the end of our driveway and just sort of squatted there for a half hour. We lived out in the woods, so there wasn't really anywhere to run to. I got bored and went back home. My mom never even realized I was gone.

The popularity in the 80s of children meeting untimely ends reminds me of the children's literature of the Victorian era, which tried to scare children straight with morality tales of terrible fates befalling naughty children. Maybe it's a cyclical fad.

3:50 I'm just thankful it was late enough in the history of production technology that they didn't shoot day-for-night.

Weird. You would think the stuff with the guy trying to bring his wife back was the original film and "jerks out to party" was the added footage, but no. Why did they add something so plot-heavy to flesh out an unfinished film about "teens" going to party? It would have been much easier and more seamless just to do more scenes like Billy's and introduce random characters that get killed before the main cast shows up.

If you kill the grim reaper, does death stop bring a thing?

There is a very good and interesting backstory to this so called movie "Spookies" which is better than the movie itself. You should check out the Vinegar Syndrome Spookies (and Twisted Souls) documentary "Twisted Tale". It discusses the special effects, the original cast and crew and all the behind the scenes craziness that was going on. It's well worth the time...especially for fans of this genre. The VS Blu-Ray release of Spookies and the documentary "Twisted Tale" shows and fully explains it all from beginning to the end. It's very interesting and it cleans up all the confusion this movie had!

Duke: โ€œWhat? You question my ability to lead? I get us thrown out of a party, then take us all on a drive into the wilderness. What happens? We find an abandoned house in the middle of a graveyard. I make us go in to party, and some chick turns into a ghoul or something and tried to kill is or make us read like some Levar Burton or sumthinโ€™. Then these dudes try to get away in the car and one of โ€˜em gets sucked into the earth and his grave appears. So the rest of us break up to search the house, and I get mad for no reason, throw myself at a door, roll down a flight of stairs. I start drinkinโ€™ some wine I find, and fart monsters attack us. How am I not a leader?โ€

There are a couple reasons cemetery grounds keepers use to live in a house on the cemetery grounds. The main reason was to maintain a constant presence 24/7 to discourage grave robbers and vandals, and the other reason is that they used to dig the graves at night so that no one saw them doing it during the day from the road or in other areas of the cemetery. They still Dig graves at night now in some places but they usually have security guards at night rather than having people live there in a house. They can dig graves during the day time now using tent/shelter things with canvas walls that hide and obscure the graves preparation from passerbyโ€™s and other people in the graveyard and to prevent them falling into the open grave by accident by leaving it open and exposed so they keep it covered by the tent thing.

I love this movie
Itโ€™s one of my favorite movies to watch during Halloween Season

I know itโ€™s kind of silly but I love the special effects and the overall haunted house setting. Itโ€™s also just unhinged and has a dark ending, of course

6:14 Roald Dahl hated children. Supporters will claim he only hated the obnoxious side of children, but I felt he just hated other people's children in general. Even his writing for adults takes a glee in sadistic violence.
