Once poor, always poor? | DW Documentary
Video Overview & Insights
One in four of Berlin’s children lives in poverty. The district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf is a particular hotbed of social disadvantage. People who grow up here have little-to-no chance of upward social mobility. But that doesn’t stop them from fighting for their rightful places in society.
Life chances and expectations shrink the poorer you are. You need the motto in your head " Life is your Oyster". Social work is for middle aged women.
Pierre Hollberg has a budget of ten euros a day for groceries — to feed six people. His wife is living with severe disabilities. They share a four-room apartment just under 90 square meters large with their four children. The parents’ bed is in the living room, and there’s no space for a dining table. His mother-in-law, Evi, supports the large family any way she can. Every two weeks, she visits a charity food bank, which distributes groceries for free.
There are many reasons people may fall into poverty: illness, unemployment, and separation, included. Single mothers get hit particularly hard. Jessica is a mother of three from Hellersdorf with two vocational qualifications. But she spent many years unemployed after separating from their father. Recently, she's begun working full-time, but earns less than she when she received social benefits. She still believes it’s important to have a job so that she can be a good role model for her children. She'd like to spare them a life of financial precarity.
The problem here is none of them are educated about birth controlling. more children more poverty
For the past thirty years, the charitable organization Die Arche - or 'The Ark', has been giving kids in Hellersdorf a chance. Their support for children and families is funded entirely by charitable donations. Pascal 'Kalle' Höhn used to be one of those children. After a difficult upbringing, violent outbursts as a teenager, and two and a half years spent in juvenile detention, he’s now training to become a welfare assistant. At The Ark, he wants to help young people avoid 'going down the wrong path' as he once did.
Poverty has many faces, and can affect anyone. It strips people of their dignity, robs adults of hope, and restricts opportunities for young people growing up. The risk of falling below the poverty line is on the rise — even in a wealthy country like Germany.
In a society with free education, liberal social benefits black work as the national sport.... Open encouragement of laziness, those who still fail are the least motivated freeloaders' and do not deserve media coverage...except for the old and disabled of course

Perhaps the father could try working part-time instead of having more children. In certain places, under certain circumstances, and only to an extent, poverty is a choice.

Evie was in agriculture, then in an ice-cream factory, then could not find work? Such jobs are everywhere, East or West Germany. She simply went on the handouts after the unification -- it became possible, and the rest followed suit.
@user-vi7rj9co5jHaving 6 children will make you poor in any country even if you are a university professor.. These "poor" people do not work yet live in clean apartments, eat meat, and have enough clothes. Why do their children not attend school? How is this connected to their being "poor"? At 16, the daughter should have a part-time job and make money.
@user-vi7rj9co5jVery very sad situation
@Rahu_654Definition of poor is different in Europe and in Africa! These kids have 90% more than the kids in Africa.. Its crazy!
@BatmanDarkknight-u8yoh, are these people poor? i wanna show them what's the meaning of poverty
@vastoryexplainedThere's no reason to skip secondary school. Free public transit, free schooling and Free meals if they qualify. Its just laziness, and they will set up there own failure. Said by me from a signle parent household below the poverty line. I still graduated
@slackandlackYet, Germany takes veey good care for the illegal immigrants!!!
@subhastheboss07:52 - I had to rewind it couple of times to re-assure myself she wasn't flipping off the camera.
@The.Real.MyMoonWho stopped them to do study and working?
@ZoomDoom-pl8ocThey’re complaining that a cucumber costs €1.80 and saying they won’t be able to afford groceries — yet they smoke, and a pack of cigarettes costs on average around €9–10.
The program even opens with the “heartwarming” note that the woman has cancer, but in the very next segment she’s smoking while complaining about the price of the cucumber in her hand. Somehow she can afford cigarettes, even after receiving a cancer diagnosis, but not basic food.
This is not poverty
@Jiafeiinyourareakeep it up! just one more regulation or a tax on the productive people will fix this!
@eduardomoura2813Cucumber vs Cigarettes -----> which team are you?
@rk8250Ultil today Germans dont understand that the "poverty" they have is better than the middle class of the rest of the world
@WaelYaktiPeople in the comments have never seen bad days, just because poverty in other places looks different doesnt mean this is not poverty. One or two bad decisions should never make life like this. One misfortune can set you back so much!!!
So lets have some heart and not say that these people asked for this...
Poverty in Australia, no home, no rental, living in a tent but have free health care.
@carriefawcett9990Nahhh, I saw an HP printer. I'm done! European poor is different from what I know poverty to be. Barbados is leaving the chat.
@MichalaRockLooking at the family cooking, they are poor but they seem to all giggle and be happy, 20:35 . So many families that have everything won’t smile and laugh together, spend time on their phones in their rooms and hardly speak to each other. These people might not earn a lot at life, but with all the health issues and bullying, the win at life. Let this sink in!
@anthonyogallus7982thats not even a real poverty, try to go to the philippines, and see how poverty realy is.
@BurgerBoi-f8l8uHow said(!) 80 % of the population can’t even afford to have her life and the biggest reason is the system that Germany co-created.
The west is ruining the world.
you Germans can not even raise your voices against the PALESTINIAN GENOCIDE!
Again how said(!)
you know that Germans not only watched but also helped and supported the genocidal Israel!
As an asian, I don't consider this documentary as really poor. It looks like more a lower middle class.
@gerishmae1343has cancer... smokes.
@vicc570Something about Lea’s outfit tells me she ain’t gonna be ‘poor’ for long 😅
@umbertostanley3866Theyre not poor they're cramped and Peire needs to get a job .
@josedez6352"It's a harsh reality that poverty is often cyclical. When the system lacks real opportunities for social mobility, children born into poverty are essentially starting a race with weights tied to their feet.
@EuropeTodayExplained"she recently learned she has cancer" shows her smoking yeah, no shi-
@ohkeibyePoverty in Germany is middle class in India .
@holbrook-ul9cfBless these families . Heartbreaking.
@Jnx-iCu2I would love to be Josie's American Bestie! I went to college for social work as well
@MandyMaeMoonpieDon't you worry, population replacement program is going to obliterate you as well.
@Tristan8768821:18 Instead of taking 4 to 6 generations to escape poverty, try 4 to 6 job applications.
@MyNameIsUnavailableLazy.
@MyNameIsUnavailableImagine the smell in there.
@MyNameIsUnavailableThey are not poor... They eat to much...
@sthone325Luxury for children these days, their parents time. They develop emotional stability well more than the children who are able to go on vacation with parents once in a while. I think these children are blessed since there is no addiction among parents and grandparents.
Parents who work 996 have no time on a daily basis and have money for vacation.
90 square meters is not small in Japan; it's big.
@常楽院秀水Germany should only take care of it's citizens ..
@LEE-ZEOBefore 30 yeara we pakisani and indian think europeon people are high figh Rich and steong healthy tall people . but now on social media we see europeon people also as same us
@hadedghani5422To people who complain about a family having 4 kids: Easy to criticise a family!! What would your family be like if one of the parents got that ill and the other has to stay home and care??? Do realize: poverty can indeed happen to everyone! Children from poor families are brave children.
@iquiltasigoalongLmao this is rest of 90% of world lives maybe more than that. This isn’t called poverty lol. Come to India and you will realise what is poverty.
