Okinawa Independence and Reality

Slogans like “Free Okinawa,” occasionally seen on social media and international media, give the impression that Okinawa broadly seeks independence from Japan. However, the reality of Okinawan public opinion is quite different.

Okinawans have a strong pride in Ryukyu culture and history, but the vast majority also identify as Japanese citizens. A 2022 survey found that about 85% consider themselves Japanese or both Japanese and Okinawan, while support for independence is limited to only a few percent. Similarly, a 2015 public opinion survey showed that only around 3% supported independence.

The independence narratives circulating on social media are often amplified through emotional messaging and repetition, making support appear larger than it is. Cultural pride and national identity coexist, and regional pride alone does not justify a call for independence.

In conclusion, the voices advocating Okinawa’s independence are a tiny minority. Discussions and reporting should distinguish between emotional impressions and actual statistical realities.

Ryukyu Kingdom was a kingdom founded by Joseon, its parent country. Erasing all of that history, and recently, after the Meiji Restoration, annexing it, they internationally declared it Japanese territory. The US military, in 1972, did not return it to Joseon. Instead, they staged an illegal show by returning it to Japan, a country invalid under international law. This is fundamentally invalid. Records show that Ryukyu Kingdom came to the Joseon Dynasty as an envoy, paid tribute, received investiture, and served Joseon, not the Ming. Furthermore, the reason the Qing Dynasty has been unable to conquer it since it was Joseon territory. So why erase history and deceive the world with such a fabricated story? Joseon and Ryukyu Kingdom are so closely intertwined and engaged in necessary trade that Joseon's territorial losses are simply too great. Among Ryukyu Kingdom, Daema Kingdom, and Tamna Kingdom, only Jeju Island belongs to Joseon. Daema Island, under the jurisdiction of Gyeongsang Province, is now part of Japan as Tsushima Island, and has never left Joseon. This island was granted autonomy by Joseon after Yi Jong-mu's conquest of Tsushima in the 1400s. With its history erased, Joseon remains the weakest and most divided nation.

As someone who lived in Okinawa for 12 years it makes me a little sad that Bourdain didn't go to any of the great foodie spots in Okinawa. Stickywich, Slappy Slice, Zazou, Pizza in the Sky, Flex, Thaicoon, Ralph's Burgers, Taco Maria, and more have been crushing it for over a decade making some of the best gourmet foodie sandwiches, pizza, burgers, Jamaican food, Thai food, Mexican food, and more. He did the typical white tourist thing and focused on nothing more than the traditional food, which is ok but it's just sad that he didn't focus any attention on the future of the Okinawa food scene. Okinawa is known for more than just Japanese/Okinawan food. They are known for curry, french patisseries, and more. RIP Anthony Bourdain though, he'll always be a legend and hold a special spot in my heart.
