Obsession Is Way Darker Than You Think

Video Overview & Insights

'Obsession' explained. A video essay (with spoilers) about the dark deeper meaning of ‘Obsession’ (2025) movie, written and directed by Curry Barker and starring Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter. In this video I get into its deeper themes and symbolism. I consider the One Wish Willow, demonic possession and more.

Thanks so much for watching! Lots of comments have been drawing my attention to interviews with the cast and crew saying that it's NOT a demonic possession movie. So I decided to respond to that in a follow-up video: https://youtu.be/i7mY87kmlso

To me the horror was the lack of agency the woman had in the relationship. She was taken hostage by him, had her life ruined by his stupid crush and he was the “victim” in the movie.

I dont think Nikki was possessed by a demon in the movie I think she was acting out what intense love and obsession actually does to a person especially when its not reciprocated

In very mild defense of Bear, I think he gains some semblance of humanity and goodwill for others when he sees that Sarah finally gets accepted to art school after being killed. It's at that point that the shame of what he's done finally sinks in and he decides to end the curse the hard way. The writers made a pretty complex, dynamic character at this point. We don't get too much backstory on this character at first, but he is introduced as a rather disrespected, 5th-wheel type. We aren't made privy to how he got to this point, but seeing the way others treat him (cutting him off all the time, etc), it's understandable that he might not be too confident. We also don't get too much info on Nikki prior to her wished version other than being the "cool writer type." Later on, there are hints that her life isn't all roses either. I really liked how the writers held a lot back or buried these elements in the details.

What if the real nicky actually made the last wish. The subconscious had enough power to convince her to wish that he would love her so much he would die for her.

Curry barker himself said that Nikki isn’t possessed by a demon . It’s the wish fulfilling bear’s wish. The willow isn’t cursed, it’s the wish itself that’s cursed. The willow is neutral

Obsession plays a double meaning. Bear is the one obsessed with possessing Nikki. He's longed for her since HS. The reason? Because she was nice to him. He didn't know that she was estranged from her dad. He didnt know that she was seeing his friend. He didnt know a lot of things considering how long he's known her. She was a doll to him

i couldnt care less of the "horror of bear getting or not getting his wish" the real horror is people like this really do exist. not outwardly malicious. not seeking to hurt. but in their weakness, inability to take action, and thinking only of themselves they ruin lives.

bear is so selfish that when confronted and begged to end Nikki's life, he doesn't try to think about her pov but asks "what's so bad about being with me?" making it about him.

This movie is the slow destruction of 2 Humans, on a Psychological and physical Level. Bear Starts as likeable dork that seems innocent but His Obsession with nikki Turns him Into a devil or maybe reveals bis true self. The Titel "Obsession" can also refer to him. He isn't willing to give Up Nikki even If it means she is posessed by a demon, he Just wants her to act more normal.

Ok you convinced me. It’s not just about a wish gone wrong. Nikki was definitely possessed.

I finally watched this movie 2 days ago and one weird thing I noticed is the first night Nikki and bear are in bed together. The digital clock goes from being around midnight to like 6:55 am in one cut. Idk if this intentional or just something that got missed in editing.

That's interesting information about the green men who also appears in GOT House of the Dragon. I don't think Bear's death was sad bcause the demon can no longer torment him but that they we're about to embark on this obsession together , and now that's no longer possible.

I feel like this movie was sending a message to all those out there who simp over women and that obsession is a path to certain destruction and chaos that rots you from the inside out , making someone forget about everything else that matters in thier life and only think about a certain person thus blinding them because of thier fantasies stay focus brothers there's more to life than chasing someone who probably doesn't share the same feelings, as a former simp please heed my warning DON'T LOSE YOURSELF OVER SOMEONE THAT DOSE'NT FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT YOU !! 😢

I learned something about love potions too! In a Christian perspective the “spell” it isnt a love spell but a lust spell .. so a demon goes to the persons dream or makes the person thinks obsessive thoughts.. it reminded me of this but ofc a demon here possessed someone… the solution if irl… is Jesus ofc, breaking all curses in jesus name

I think the film could be a cautionary tale that men and women express love differently due to having vastly different hormonal systems. If you take out the possibility of possession (it could be she's subconsciously aware of or influenced by the willow, rather than possessed), this seems like the most likely explanation for the deeply erratic behavior seen in the film. Testosterone plays a major role in how men place value on love (men on average produce 10-20x more), the message being conveyed in the film could be women likely aren't equipped to handle the intensity men have for the object of their desire. A lot of men try to deny it, but romantic love, what they like about their partners (Bear liking how she talked to the homeless man for example), filters from physical attraction. It can come across as creepy to people that can't see the nuance, so many men develop social skills or behaviors (often subconsciously) to cope around their biology. She's not compartmentalizing, ignoring impulses or pretending her desires don't exist, she's feeling it all without choice

That chemical fixation transposed into her hormonal system, without any learned ability to cope, drove her to completely lose sight of herself, to the point she imploded, dissociated and pleaded for death in third person. Nikki may even have repressed manic behavior in the past (her nickname 'freaky Nikki'), which could have contributed to the breakdown. The film is meant to help people empathize with the burden men have to deal with. It's not saying men are like Nikki when they are lonely and desperate, rather the film asks what it would be like if a woman, possibly predisposed with mania, were to receive the burden of possessing the psychology of one 'predating' the opposite sex, as men are designed to with women

I find it funny it's become a bible on how to spot pathetic, weak-willed men that don't love in the same capacity as women.. Maybe one day more will see it as I do, and this will become a cult classic for that reason. I personally think it's Curry's intent to see how the film is interpreted over time, when sensibilities shift away from what's currently popular

Though I haven't watched the film and have only heard of it.

Once upon a time, a man named Toby had a wife and lover named Samantha. When Samantha died, she went to Heaven. While God was helping her get settled into the mansion He had prepared for her, Toby was left grieving on Earth.

In his grief, Toby turned to a demonic spirit named Ti'lak, whom he knew from his time practicing Wicca. He begged the demon to resurrect Samantha so that her soul could return to her body and she could be with him again.

But it did not work the way Toby expected.

The problem was that Ti'lak could not bring a soul back from Heaven. He was not even allowed into Heaven because of what had gotten him cast out in the first place. As a result, he could not return Samantha's spirit or soul to her body.

Instead, he animated the body itself.

He jump-started the brain and restored bodily functions, but he never returned Samantha's soul. Her spirit remained in Heaven, completely separate from what Toby now saw walking around before him.

The body retained all of Samantha's memories, but its behavior was strange. It acted almost like an alien trying to imitate a human being. It knew it was Samantha, remembered Samantha's life, and possessed Samantha's memories, yet its mannerisms, body language, and behavior felt fundamentally wrong.

Despite being soulless, the body operated with its own agency.

In reality, Toby was spending time with a body that had been separated from its soul—a desouled, dispirited body. It functioned similarly to how an atheist might imagine a human body functioning: as a purely physical organism acting independently.

Within the story's universe, however, this was abnormal. Every other human being possessed a body, soul, and spirit working together. The soul served as the source of life and consciousness. This was the only body that no longer functioned that way.

What does this have to do with Obsession?

Technically, Ti'lak was animating a dead body—something akin to Frankenstein's monster, though without combining multiple corpses.

That led me to wonder whether the wish in Obsession might operate in a similar way.

What do I mean?

I had a theory that I discussed with God during prayer. The theory came from something the actress said about Nikki. According to her, Nikki was simultaneously experiencing something similar to locked-in syndrome and a form of teleportation where she would pop in and out of her own body. Nikki could see through her body's eyes without fully controlling it, yet she could also seemingly teleport in and out of it. The actress Inde and Curry Barker decided to blend both concepts together.

This raises a question:

What is Nikki's body is acting without her agency?

What if the body behaves as though it loves Bear when Nikki herself does not?

When characters say, "This is a new being that you brought into existence, and you're responsible for it," I wonder whether the wish responded not only to Bear's words but also to Bear's beliefs.

My theory is that Bear began as an atheist. Since atheists generally do not believe in souls or spirits, Bear viewed Nikki as purely physical.

The problem is that Nikki's behavior makes little sense otherwise. The only alternative explanation would be that Nikki was misidentifying her own actions as someone else's because she loved Bear excessively leading to abnormal behavior. However, that conflicts with the actress's explanation that Nikki was teleporting in and out of her body.

Furthermore, why would loving someone more than anything else lead a person to harm themselves? It would not and the only way it would be is that person viewed that as how you show someone you love them or saw that as what the other person needed, not just wanted, in a deeply unhealthy, self-destructive, and distorted way.

This is why the sleeping scene stands out to me.

Nikki says, "She's asleep. Kill me."

Bear responds, "Is it so bad being with me?"

Nikki answers, "I've never been with you, Bear."

That exchange is strange because Nikki claims Freaky Nikki is asleep while simultaneously speaking through the SLEEPING body.

If the body of Nikki is truly asleep, then who is speaking?

It seems as though the body's biological rhythms are functioning independently & Nikki's spirit is no longer synchronized with her physical form.

If souls and spirits exist in this universe, then when a person sleeps, their soul should not remain fully conscious and active while the body rests. The body, mind, spirit, and soul should function together as they do with Bear.

That interconnectedness is why the bedroom scene feels unnatural. Bear's body sleeps, and his soul literally sleeps with it. Nikki's body sleeps, and her soul is still awake.

The spirit of Nikki should have been asleep if her body was asleep like Bear's case.

Because of this, I theorize that the wish interpreted Bear's request according to Bear's worldview.

If a Christian version of Bear had made the wish, perhaps the body, soul, and spirit would all have fallen in love with Bear together.

But if Bear was an atheist, then the wish may have operated on the assumption that Nikki consisted only of her physical body.

Under that interpretation, the wish ignored Nikki's soul and spirit entirely.

It acted only upon the body.

The being created by the wish would therefore be Nikki's body, animated independently of the soul that originally gave it life.

In this theory, the wish effectively removed Nikki's soul and spirit, rewired the body, in such a way that it granted the brain an independent consciousness so it could function according to Bear's understanding of reality.

The result would be horrifying.

Nikki would lose agency because her body would gain agency.

Her spirit would become disconnected while her physical form developed an independent will and Bear doesn't believe in that connection ever existing..

This would explain why Nikki sometimes appears detached from her own body, why the body behaves in ways she does not recognize, and why she repeatedly insists, "That's not me."

Technically, it would be her body.

But it would no longer be entirely her.

The body would possess Nikki's memories, habits, and physical form, yet it would operate independently from the soul that originally inhabited it.

This theory could also explain the shadowy imagery surrounding the body. The shadows may symbolize the absence of the soul. The body appears hollow because something essential is missing.

The glitches, strange movements, and conflicting behavior might represent Nikki attempting to regain control over a body that has become its own sentient being.

In that case, Nikki and her body would eventually have to reach some form of coexistence.

They would need to communicate, cooperate, and share agency.

The body would not simply disappear, and Nikki could not simply reclaim complete control.

Instead, they would have to learn to function together as the Holy Trinity (The Father, The Son, & The Holy Spirit) does despite Nikki and her body now being somewhat separate entities.

Under this interpretation, the wish did not merely alter Nikki's emotions.

It fundamentally changed the relationship between Nikki's body, soul, and spirit.

The wish misplaced her soul, teleporting it out of the body, possibly to see if the new mechanic would work, granted her body independent consciousness, and then forced both into a state that neither was meant to occupy.

As a result, the universe of Obsession itself would be dealing with something entirely new: a human body capable of functioning independently from the soul it was originally created to work alongside.

And that possibility is what makes the theory so interesting.

17:20 The only true unconditional freely given love is God's. Human love requires overcoming our own and the other's brokenness to come to a place of trust that is earned. It doesn't come quickly, it doesn't come automatically, it takes time and patience and effort. This is also why I'm uncomfortable with "love at first sight" rom-coms - that's not how it works.
