I secretly learned to speak North Korean dialect from an actual North Korean defector and then I went to real North Korean restaurants to try ordering in North Korean and things got a little out of hand.

My first stop was Seoul, South Korea, at a restaurant run by North Korean defectors. My next stop was Beijing, China, where I ordered at an actual DPRK government-run restaurant staffed by North Koreans still “in the system.”
