"(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, released in 1967. Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during both Bee Gees concerts and his solo appearances. It later appeared on their 1968 album, Horizontal.
This was the first Bee Gees song I ever heard. I am commenting this on 20.05.2026 the 14th anniversary of Robin Gibbβs passing. I love early era Bee Gees.
The song became the first of the group's five No. 1 hits in the UK Singles Chart, reached No. 1 in twelve other countries, peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually sold over five million copies worldwide. When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts.
On August 27, 1967, Beatles' manager Brian Epstein told Maurice Gibb that "'Massachusetts' is a great song that would be very successful."[citation needed] Epstein died later that night.
Before dico,rap,hip hop,and all other"music" there was the Bee GeesπΊπ²πΆβΉοΈ
When it was released in the UK, the title was "Massachusetts (The Lights Went Out in)" but the subtitle was later dropped. In America, Atco Records delayed it to release "Holiday". The song "Massachusetts" has a minor claim to fame in the history of British radio as it was the second record played on BBC Radio 1. The first song to be played was "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move.

Feel I'm goin' back to Massachusetts
Something's telling me I must go home
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
The day I left her standing on her own
Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco
Gotta do the things I wanna do
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
They brought me back to see my way with you
Talk about the life in Massachusetts
Speak about the people I have seen
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
And Massachusetts is one place I have seen
I will remember Massachusetts
I will remember Massachusetts
Ah-ahh
The drummer kinda looks like Richard Carpenter. Obviously Richard was a keyboardist and not a drummer.
@andrewleung6282Splendid accompaniement maurice
@Chris-xx8jrA staple part of British top hits history, and to a lesser rating of #11 in America (1967). If this happened today in MA, it is not clear to me at all that FEMA would dispense its rapid response team to assist there, particularly where Harvard is sited, the Boston/Cambridge area. Damn! Barry was fit!
@geerterriThe 60s Bee Gees were young, and the songs they wrote and sang were of more thought and substance than the songs of the 70s version, although I liked both periods a lot. What a fabulous musical legacy they created and left us.
@tomdooley4226π wonderful
@TanteLeonieCombrayCiao Antonio. Forza!!!

@bcnmanhattan50I love how clear this is, but itβs frustrating how the camera keeps leaving Barryβs face! It shouldβve been illegal to do so.
@PresleyPark-c7yLooks like this came from one of the very few clips/episodes to survive from the early years of the UK show βTop of the Popsβ.
@MrWildcat2009Footage taken from 1967 Boxing Day edition of Top of the Pops...Shame the intro by Alan ''Fluff'' Freeman has been edited out.

2nd SONG TO BE PLAYED ON RADIO ONE ON OPENING IN 1967. WITH FLOWERS IN THE RAIN BEING THE FIRST BY THE MOVE. BARRY GIBB SAID THAT THE SONG WAS WRITTEN TO BE GIVEN TO THE SEEKERS AND HAD NO REPLY FROM THE SEEKERS MANAGER π·. JUDITH DURHAM KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT UNTIL SHE BUMPED INTO THE GIBBS YEARS LATER. THE SEEKERS RECORDED THE SONG IN MEMORY OF MAURICE WHEN HE PASSED AWAY ? A SONG WELL WORTH LISTENING TO BY THE SEEKERS. OBVIOUSLY WITH THE VOICE OF JUDITH DURHAM IT WAS BOUND TO BE A CLASSIC WITH GREAT HARMONIES BY THE GUYS.
@harryhackney6416Iβm impressed with how clear and sharp this is, unlike many older videos Iβve seen. Whatever happened to the other two boys in the group?
@peecee1384Never heard this sound better Sammy!! Great synch work as well !! Cheers Tiger.
@TigerRogers0660Notice all the smiles, they just found out this song was NO. 1 on the charts!
