I am terrible at small talk, but over the years I have made great improvements. One time, at a kids birthday party, I found myself standing next to a young guy. I said hello and then he started to admire the scenery. I immediately pointed to his shoes and said, “I love your shoes! Where did you get those shoes?” His shoes were actually really nice-very colorful and looked mighty comfortable. That opened the floodgates. We ended up chatting for nearly an hour.

3:32 very true, it's very easy to fall into that trap when you meet someone for the first time and are interested in them

Why everyone assumes we have fancy weekend plans? I’m just here ordering takeout, binging shows, napping all day and ignoring my to-do list. I feel seen so hard

My son-in-law turned me onto your podcast. I’m really enjoying listening to it. There’s so many good nuggets of wisdom. I really appreciate you. A possible topic of discussion, how to deal with narcissistic people? Maybe you’ve already talked about this in the past podcast, but I had several narcissistic people in my life that are family members. I could always use help with this topic. Thank you.

My husband often asks our adult kids “tell me anything good” and at first we were annoyed by it but now we all are training our brains to select something good from our lives that will encourage each other- things we read, watched, heard or thought about to share with each other

@sarahfreeman5325

No, good try brother. What are you excited about? That’s the dumbest question I’ve ever heard. I was trying to learn how to stop being so awkward and weird co workers already think I’m a weirdo because of my past drug problems.. I’m in recovery. So I don’t get asked to go to the bar after work.. not just going to come out with Hello, what are you excited about!? Lol

Small talk v being nosy

There is no interaction between humans so mundane that there isn't somebody off the street you never heard of who thinks you need his/her "expertise" to pull it off. I guess this guy will keep smiling as long as people are buying his book (not to mention his "expertise").

How to start conversation when we are somewhere , and we want to explain our problem.
For example, when I go to hospital, as soon as I got there. I am asked ; what wrong with you. Here is which I get stuck how to start. Now you can imagine different situations.

@fardinsediqi7697

What if you really don’t care? Isn’t it being fake then? I am really being honest and not flippant. This is one reason why I hate small talk. Another is I usually say something stupid and not related to the small talk. Any help would be great.

9:30 The head tip is amazing.

@carlosergut

I like conversations that just happen, no one feels forced to say a word, when silence is allowed and then someone talks because they wanted to not because they felt the need to. Why is silence so upsetting to so many people? I dont want to listen to you ramble just to filll the silence. I love quiet people that can talk when they want, then can be in silence for hours later. Why do we have to talk to keep everyone happy?

@Angel-gb9gi
@

This was so good. Thank you!

@kcole0920

I was going to listen to this video, but I decided not to because this guy is making a video in his car. Really? Why doesnt he wait until he is in a room alone to film himself. Not worth listening to someone who films in a car.

@cmvr9138
@

How do you move the interaction to a point where it is worth participation in the conversation? I need to get past what the other person did last weekend. I don't care unless it is exceptional.

I don't feel comfortable telling people about myself. It does not matter if i know their life story or they are a stranger. How can i have a discussion that is not about the participants?

Thanks this cleared up many things for me. Im somebody that worked blue collar my whole life and recently switched to the corporate world. Small talk with these people is one of the first things i started struggling with

Take aways

How are you doing ❌what ✅fun you had this weekend .
What intreseting things you are going to do this week. ✅
1)Discuss about action things going on in their life like fun , what they are going through what intreseting things are planning to do.
2) give options to them like u prefer cold or hot weather . Are u day or night person
3)end the conversation at a high node - like when I start feel like it's going nowhere
