Netflix CEO Reed Hastings on the battle of the streaming giants – BBC Newsnight

Video Overview & Insights

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sits down with Kirsty Wark.

I just know that after more than 1 year and a half on (semi) lockdown, Netflix has meant a survival tool for most families, at least in my country.

After losing subscribers for the first time in July this year, Netflix has announced a £400m investment in British productions as it gears up for a battle against a plethora of well-funded new rivals.

This was a horrible interview, so severely leaned to one side.

But will that be enough?

Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

Walt Disney owns half of Endemol Shine, which makes many of these so-called Netflix "Originals."

Those are pretty solid answers. I mean he is right - content is king. Disney have an amazing catalog and I think they will be the biggest competitor. As for Apple TV, only Apple sheep will buy into that.

Awesome job Netflix. I am actually impressed. Unbelievable was fantastic. Then I watched The Spy, all in 2 days, end of F world was great. Master of None super. The Crown woa didn't believe I would be interested in the UK monarchy. House of cars total classic (what you did to Kevin Spacey though he single handedly built Netflix!) also shame you deleted all Louis CK content, that guy is the absolute best. Some of that mee too stuff is just total bullcrap.

When it went up to almost $13.00. I called them after 7 yrs and the nasty customer service rep, just pissed me off enough that I cancelled my subscriptions. I have Amazon prime and it serves in 2 categories TV and free delivery. Why should I be abused as though I am a stupid person that doesnt understand how wonderful Netflix is... are you kidding me mostly the genre is screaming, blood, and guts. This guy is out of touch.

The only real threat to Netflix is Disney

@TOSStarTrek

Face it there’s only so many Finnish, Russian, Chinese and German crime dramas you can watch before you realise Netflix is just shit and you cancel your subscription.

Never seen Netflix is it free the only way they can compete if it's free

I think they should concentrate on Serieses rather than movies.

Netflix has been the only subscription I have for the last 4 yrs. Yeah I considered stopping when the price moved up and prior to family threat of strike. What makes work is diversity of content and that its the underdog. Who else has the balls to produce Narcos, Marco Polo, the Crown and at kast some SF such as Star Trek and Lost in Space? Its the definitive underdog we all love.

Other streaming services are not really competition and lack diversity. They all lack gay content even Netflix. The only real competition is Amazon.
