Yes, there was more to the story. Of the disappearance of Flight 19, you also had 2 other planes disappear that went out to find them.
You don't mention that how come in some of the other books that I've read and whatever else Flight 19 disappeared, but you sent out 2 Sea plane's that went the same route. They took and did whatever they could, but they too disappeared. There's also a mention that somebody else from land witnessed an explosion in midair that might have been one of the seaplanes
