My Rifle Blew Up in My Face

Video Overview & Insights

🎯 Welcome to Another Remlite Hunt Episode!

Holy smokes. Good to see your ok

β€” @joshjameskiwibushman

Not the usual hunt this time!

If you've ever wondered what you'd do if everything went wrong on a backcountry hunt, this is my story.

Glad you’re doing better.

β€” @armydog1002

I headed into New Zealand public land expecting nothing more than another adventure chasing red skins in the bush. What started as a normal hunting trip quickly turned into a rifle that catastrophically failed and blew up in my face.

With a decent amount of shell shock and blood everywhere, I activated my Garmin inReach SOS, knowing I needed help.

That's one of the reasons why I always wear shooting safety glasses every single time. It's like when I'm riding my motorcycle I always wear a helmet, no t just for legal reasons but for common sense

β€” @dommm111

A big thanks to the two good fellas in the hut (you know who you are) who helped me out with things.

If you hunt public land, carry a rifle, or spend time in remote backcountry country, I hope this story encourages you to think seriously about preparation, emergency communication, and the value of carrying a satellite device like the Garmin inReach.

If this video helps even one hunter be better prepared, then sharing this experience will have been worthwhile.

If you enjoy New Zealand hunting content, backcountry adventures, long-range shooting, gear reviews, and honest hunting stories, consider subscribing to Remlite Hunts for more videos from the hills.

This would be the most disheartening experience for an American, I am glad it didn't eviscerate your retinas though, that is the mother of all silver linings here!

Maybe stick to pistols from now on, I would. Or even safer: crossbows with safety glasses.

Glad you're recovering. Did your gunsmith thread the muzzle?

β€” @Brad-RB

Rifle failure

Garmin inReach SOS

Possibilities: ....1) Cheaply made rifle that exceed the steel's structural limits when firing. .....2) Squib Load, perhaps you fired it, and loaded again and fired it and BOOM! .....3) Double charging gun powder, although the dude said he bought manufactured ammo ......4) Suppressor blocked the barrel....or 5) Barrel was not cleaned before going out.

I'm glad you are recovering and all the best in the future . Personally I don't like muzzle brakes and don't like suppressors . Not sure if I understood correctly that you had both on?? 7mm-08 is a mild cartridge, probably no need for a muzzle brake in the first place.

Best wishes for your recovery, I hope you get back out on the trail soon enough.
I'd give you a hug, but it's quite far from Sweden.

Hunting gear and preparation

Long-range hunting

We have deer crawling all over the place around our house here in Oregon. I have to build fencing to keep them out of the garden. They like to sleep under the deck because it's cooler there. I don't have a hunting license, but if I got really hungry, I would just shoot one of the deer to survive. Turkeys everywhere around here, also. I don't need to go hiking all over the mountains to get food.

Did you check the alignment with a rod after the gunsmith work? Or did you at least pull the bolt and look down the barrel? This screams barrel obstruction to me

Had a few pieces of shrapnel goe in my right eye and right hand. I was giving safety lessons. We had multiple guns, and I was explaining to everyone how important it is to always check your ammo. It's embarrassing because I told someone else to read the shell casings, but I myself didn't double-check. There ended up being a 30.06 mixed in with my 308s. I shot it, and it blew up. Missed my retina, so I didn't lose any vision. It could be other things, but that is what happened in this particular incident. At least everyone got a bit of an education that day, including myself.

Sounds like he shot a squib or had a barrel blockage

@

that explanation makes no sense mechanically. The bullet blew up in the end of the barrel? There most likely was an obstruction.

A red dot and a silencer, not going for distance?

@WingWalker1
@

So sorry this happened to you and you have some permanent vision loss

@petewilson2314
@

Commenting for your algorithm. Thank God you made it through this. I'm obviously guessing here, but i'm thinking the gunsmith left a rag in the barrel. nothing else makes sense unless he fired your gun first and had a squib

@SugarMilkbro

Glad you're ok man. This reminds me I need to shop for a couple more sets of Z87 rated eye pro. I usually carry clear and tinted lenses so there is no excuse not to wear them. I've even run ballistic lenses when mountain biking.

@Catman-n4m

something inside the barrel "squib load"

I had the exact same thing happen to me with a separated case. It blew apart and peppered my shooting eye and my hand and virtually identical issues.

Gunsmith not having insurance is in the same league as shooting without eye pro- neither are proper.

@JosefCharoni
@

man thats terrifying. And out there in the wilderness alone. Good on you for making it back. This is a PSA for eye pro, even when youre tromping in the bush. Sunnies or clear pro will do.

@Wonderbread1981

You are extremely lucky. Please update us when you get more information. We should all use this as a lesson to wear saftey equipment whenever shooting.

@pulldeauxduck2480

You need an injury lawyer. If you can prove it was the gunsmiths fault and they are not insured they will get shut down potentially saving others from the same fate. Don't let them get away with maiming you, if it was their fault.

@BlueMountainSports
@

Seem like the gunsmith Left something in the barrel, obviously some kind of blockage happened

@ccoop2416
@

The helicopter ride and the hospital were both luxuries. I'm convinced this dude would have made a full recovery either way, dude is made of solid granite

@davey6058
@

sounds like some mud or something may have gotten in the barrel. why alot of people tape the end of their rifles. the tape will blow off immediately wi the first shot

@azalkathegunpowderdragon9439
@

Guessing a squib load or some other barrel obstruction?

Eye protection is always a must!

I had a squib a few months ago with a Glock 17, thankfully didn't chamber another round otherwise I'd probably have a few less digits and a bit more difficulty typing this.

@CaolanSuibhne
@

why im tryna wear glasses more. i need to upgrade my eyeglasses to a safty variant, but otherwise ive started keeping a pair of old shooting glasses from the 80s in my car. gives me fallout 3 vision as a bonus haha

@azalkathegunpowderdragon9439
@

Sooo. I had a similar incident happen about 18 years ago, no suppressor tho, and what was finally determined was that the "custom" barrel was slightly out of true about 10" inches from the muzzle which allowed the projectile to become unstable and it slammed into the muzzle break and jammed causing a catastrophic explosion. This was an $8000 rifle mind you so not a cheaply made barrel. I was, fortunately wearing Peltor, eye pro and a ballistic helmet. If I had not been, I would be dead. The bolt blew out of the rifle, slammed into the helmet and wedged itself against the liner. I suffered 3 broken vertebrae in my neck from.the impact. It may be worth having yours checked

@badguybuster
@

was it made in China?

@mikeskidmore6754
@

A bulge right at the end makes me think it was a bore obstruction. Did you look through the barrel after you received it?(Idk if i would have, considering it came from a gunsmith) I wonder if an alignment rod or some sort of pin gauge or something was left in the barrel by accident.

@hutchdoesstuff

Am sorry to hear what happened to your eye I hope you see the light at the end of the tunnel and get back in to what you enjoyed. Again praying for you brother
