Moving to a new city won't make you happy (and that's okay)

Video Overview & Insights

In this video, I want to tell you why moving or traveling never gives me the things that I want — and how that somehow always ends up being exactly what I need.

I like this video. But getting through my job through one winter in Minnesota still makes me want to continue my current job without the harsh winters (I drive semis locally). It would be quite a life change. I have lived in the same Minneapolis suburb since age zero (I'm 26.5).

This is what we call "too talented, not enough sleep." I sell sleep. (Also editing.)

I'm moving to a new city by myself for the first time in a week. I'm 25 and I'm going to start a new job there. I'm excited but also very scared. I don't know what to expect... I'm happy I watched your video before!

I left NC for Hawaii...hated it...then SC, FL, CO, Montana, VA, Idaho only to find my home state was the best...and I was running away when I needed to face my pain

Leaving Washington state for sunnier places next week! I’ve been in Washington 5 years and I love it but the weather makes me depressed and I’ve never adjusted and after 5 years I learned it’s not going to get better

For me its the urge to try something new. Im lived in a suburb 13 miles form chicago (a good city btw) and lived there for 24 years. I needed something different. Ive now been in seattle for nearly a year and i like it. But dont think ill be here that long cause i ultimately dont want to be THAT far from family. Sometimes i feel like these moves are good learning experience

Leaving Seattle two years ago was an amazing decision for me, but I came prepared with a game plan, a mindset, and research on my new city. I hit the ground running. Life hasn't always been easy, but it's better than being stuck where I was born and lived most of my life.

Moving stripped away not only all my previous comforts, but also all my businesses living in my previous city. Since moving, I've certainly had to face myself and that in itself can be a grueling process. Day by day, things are getting better, and despite the challenges, there's been no urge to move back to my hometown.

In 2018 after prison, I moved to Houston by myself on the condition of 1 year of Parole. I found a Job and manged to keep it until 2021. In 2021 I made a stupid dissision to move back home with my parents in my hometown. The safety net of my parents is what made me not take jobs seriously and jump on to the next until my luck ran out. Its 2026, no job for the past 2 years. What gives me hope is eventually inheriting the house and sell it and move back to Houston or even Austin to start over. In terms of growth, I was better off in Houston.

Thanks. I know happiness is an inside job. I just needed a change of scenery but I know that moving won’t solve my problems. I’m hoping that I’ll become a more resilient person and grow more into myself without the influence of my family.

Moving to a new city was the worst advice I ever received. In my old town I knew and grew up with people and family was close by.

In a new city, I'm still an outsider in most places after 7 years.

My reasons for wanting to move to what would seemingly be a different world, are pretty much some of what you mentioned and wanting to get away from all I've known: the culture, the people, the sights and sounds, the overall environment and it's energy - because I think I'll become worse off if I remain where I am. I can't see myself living the rest of my time on Earth in this same place. I have to get out.

Regarding the dark things I might be faced with upon changing that aspect of my situation, I'm pretty much already there. I already know all too well everything dark about me. It's in my head all the time. When I first started strongly considering getting away, never once did I assume that those personal issues would cease to exist by doing so. I just simply don't want to be here. I gotta get away. Even if moving will only improve my mental health a bit, I see that as a win. It's nearly an emergency escape that I need.

I moved from Philly to Idaho, to California and then to Vegas. This is relatable as I want to move again.

Can’t tell you how helpful your videos have been for me man! Greatly appreciate the work you do. I have always wanted to move out west and I’m absolutely committed to making it happen this year before I turn 30!

Thank you so much for this realization of yours. I will be moving to Alaska next month from Dubai (I am from Philippines by the way) I am just hoping that I won't regret moving there and won't get so depress.🙏

I moved abroad to study and I ended up becoming a completely different person and every summer/christmas when I moved home I became depressed. When my studies finished I had no idea what to do, so I decided it must be traveling/being away from home. Spent the next 2 years working bad jobs to save up and travel, while those experiences were incredible they were in no way perfect. Lots of challenge, learning, struggle and a reminder of the different issues in my life. I came home after one and Covid happened so I ended up getting super focused on self development and trying to figure my life out, and in many ways I did. I find I have a lot of limitations living at home with my family and see moving out/away as a way to learn all the things I need to (saving, living on my own, socialising as an adult...) but I'm excited about the future and see so many possibilities, I see the path forward

Love hearing your insight, not planning on moving but my adult son is, so thanks for sharing your experiences. Helps me to have a better perspective to have a meaningful discussion about this with him. I’ve moved to two different cities in the Southeast in my life and both times was super rushed and I lost things and it seemed to trigger hoarding -but got help and now the house is (almost)spotless except for one room but it took a lot of work.

Finally moving from NYC to Chicago at the end of this month and I thought I would happy (I am!) but I had a wave of sadness hit me and cried. I know the move will be good for me but I’m managing my expectations

Thought going to europe and traveling would make me happy.but honestly you gotta be content and happy with yourself.the experience and the journey may be amazing but sometimes a tree in a hurricane bus stronger when it has roots than without

Thank you for your videos and all the great support you are bringing to people facing the same challenges ! For me about 18 months ago I came to the USA from another continent, where I had to leave everything behind, my family, friends, house and dogs 😢… I had that motivation that once I’m in the USA I will work hard and progress and explore many new things… I didn’t consider that I might have homesickness or get depressed…until I changed my current job to make another move to a new city (Gainesville) in a new state … only after being accepted in my new job I felt homesick, scared and anxious about what struggle might be there waiting for me and if I can make it again or not, and an endless cycle of « what if » … I started ruminating on how things will be once there, and how can I adjust myself again… I do struggle with general anxiety btw … I feel lost and scared… what do you advise me. Thanks

Thank you for the video Tyler! This really resonates with me as I'm contemplating a move from City A (Atlanta) after 7 years to City B (Austin or Miami). I have a remote job so I would keep the same job for now but I feel like a need a change and my fears and challenges are precisely what you brought up in this video. Would you still recommend a move to Austin for someone to move alone (I'm 31) in 2024?

@Realmadrid9292
@

Thanks for the insight. I am contemplating moving from a small/medium sized city (population 200k) to Atlanta (City B). I’ve been forced to work on myself after a breakup in March. Tried to do new things and create new relationships but I’ve found it to be quite difficult in the city i’m in because of the general age demographics (mostly older people in my city). All my highschool friends are in the military now and I’m still at my parents house at 24 years old with a remote job. It’s about time I leave and start my own life. I appreciate your videos!!!
