Not apples to apples. ESP is a more robust, thicker 30 weight for Euro applications. The 0w30 and 5w30 should BOTH have been ESP. The AFE is a fuel economy spec grade and therefore a thinner 30 weight that shears down into the 20 weight range much more readily.

“Viscosity Grade
SAE 5W-30 is the best viscosity grade for the vehicle. Do not use other viscosity grade oils such as
• SAE 10W-30, 10W-40, or 20W-50.
If in an area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls below -20°F (-29°C), an SAE OW-30 oil should be used. An oil of this viscosity grade will provide easier cold starting for the engine at extremely low temperatures. When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, always select an oil that meets the dexos1 specification or equivalent. See "Specification" for more information.”

What about with hot weather? I have V60 d5 from 2012, coldest temperature where i live in winter is -5 C... But from april until november it goes from 10 to 35 degrees (summer afternoon on the sun).
I use 0-30 but should i maybe switch to 5-30?

I am from Montenegro (Mediterranean county with very hot summers, few months more than 40°C, and winters with maximum one month temperature not lower than -8°C). I bought XC60 2.4 D5 couple weeks ago. Vehicle is imported from Sweden and manufacturer recommendations for oil is 0-30 A5B5, but in Sweden is a way different climate. Should I continue with 0-30 or use 5-30?

Why to compare it in -30? It's edge case temperature, not normal as usually (for places where people lives). The interesting thing is what will be the diff between these in -15

First number is the viscosity for cold temp. Second number is viscosity at operating temperature. for warmer climates like the mid-west we rarely see temps lower than -10 F. So 5w30, 5w20,0w20 all are going to be acceptable. Remember the main reason of newer model vehicles "requiring" 0-20 was for CAFE regulations...not flow. Research EPA and CAFE oil regulations.
Its always about the $$$.

Car recommends 0/5w- 30/40 grade. Just switched from 5w-40 to 0w-40w and seems to be a big difference according to this when the average temp in winter is below -20c, altough a block heater will make it matter less

5 w stays on the parts better .. Especially if your car is sitting a while ,,, The thinner oil drains easier but stays off the parts 5 w gives a better coating and it drains off less... Never ever change your oil's engine weight always go by manufactures recommended kind

Here is what I don't understand. Why would 0W-30 ever be a bad idea to run in an engine that recommends 5w-30 or 10w-30? Why wouldn't it always be better? Cause as far as my understanding goes.he W just means the viscosity in cold temperatures, it's "winter weight" or it's viscosity on start up. Since the oil will warm up rather quickly and become 30 weight, why wouldn't you want it as low viscosity as you can get on the start up to get that oil lubricating as fast as possible. Disclaimer: Yes I know, I still use the recommended oil type in my cars, I never go against Manufacturers instructions. I just want to understand the logic. But I am human and sometimes just do what you're told doesn't sit well, I need more information on the why!

Guys don't be fooled. Even for Canadian winters you could still use 5w. Provided you do your oil change once a year and in spring. The logic is that by the winter the 5w becomes less viscous; hence, as viscos a brand new 0w.

If you are counting on oil to protect your engine at -22F then you are a bit of a dope. Buy an oil heater or move to Florida!
