One correction - even Brooklyn can be expensive. There are good places to stay in Queens and uptown Manhattan and if willing to go farther out, some areas of New Jersey - the area around the Meadowlands Sports Arena, Montclair and Jersey City. Also easier to rent a car out there and explore some worthwhile spots near NYC.

Tipping culture is a THING in NYC, but you don't have to tip for coffee, etc. Cafe's definitely will ask on their register app, but often locals dont. For bar/pub culture, its typically 1-2 dollars a drink.

On times square.... yes you should go at least once, but be wary. I recommend honestly going in the morning or during theater showing times (less people). Or go with the intention of seeing a show. Its definitely not a hang out place haha. If you do want to hang nearby it, do go to bryant park or grab a bite off of 9th ave (or in between 8th and 9th) for hells kitchen eateries.

Thanks so much. I am comming to America for the first time in my life, and I've picked New York because it's the closest from Europe, and I've never been on another continent. I want to see how I'll do on a long flight. I was thinking I might take the train to Washington while in US but I'll see how it goes. I am soo ooooo excited and really appreciate all your tips and trips. I'll binge watch it again closer to my trip and take notes. I can't wait to see the skyscrapers and feel the vibe of this beautiful city 😍

We stayed on new jersey side and went in on car on Sunday when parking was free and traffic was light. We found parking rather easily. But rest of the week we took the bus across the river that brings you to the bus terminal right in the middle of the city. That is in the mall too so free washrooms.

3:31 I definitely agree with Mark’s point. Important to go to the bathroom multiple times before you leave.

This is one of the common mistakes visitors make when they travel. Not many bathrooms are public, If you ever go to a restaurant or store, many ask the people to purchase someone before using the bathroom. Much it as it unfair to you folks, couple reasons why.

1. Maintenance and crowd control - It requires a lot of cleaning and lot of times people will just leave it messy would not care on condition it’s in and some business don’t want many people to their establishments to use the bathroom a lot.

2. Security measure - Preventing crime like vandalism and other things.

It’s simple. If you’re not going to dine in or anything, then you have no business here.

Thanks for saying it's not scary. People have been hyping NYC danger too much recently. My tip would be go to a less touristy neighborhood to see the slower side of the city with less bustle. Food will be way cheaper and the experience will be more unique.

Don’t assume all pizza places are created equally, they definitely aren’t! Also, if possible go to a sporting event, it’s worth the money even if the team is not having a good season, sports are a huge part of New York culture.

It's disappointing to see tourists going into chain restaurants in NY like TGIF Fridays, just because they are familiar. There are so many unique food options that may be the best meal of your trip if you just do a little bit of research and are willing to step out of your comfort zone to enjoy excellent authentic food (eg Chinatown, Jackson Heights, Harlem). And if you can afford it, splurge on a fancy restaurant booked in advance (11 Madison, Le Bernardin).

Good restroom advice. The unofficial city motto is "Restroom for paying customers ONLY". I would also add that you should know the difference stops between local and express trains.

@RalphStarkPhoto

One tip for using Uber in NYC is- sometimes if you search for a ride it might come up as say $40 but if you walk a block or two in the direction you want to go and try to get to a more central spot away from a crowd “like when the broadway plays let out” the fair might be $10 less. We did this several times and it seemed to work pretty good.

So funny how the "prepare your feet" advice only applies to non NYC Americans. Just about everyone else around the world walks a ton.

@tubz
@

You’d be amazed how a lot of tourists that’s never been to the states really only want to visit NYC. It’s like Americans when we go to other countries, they only go to super touristy places.

Statue of Liberty book your tickets months in advance. If you you can’t get tickets for your trip ride the Staton Island Ferry ( FREE) runs practically all day and night and great views of the Lady Liberty. If you get a ticket to walk up the base of the statue, Be Prepared it’s not a short walk and elevator is only for Emergency

Crossing against the light, beware of the Bus Lane! Car traffic might be stopped but the bus lanes can be wide upen

@TheColleendoll
@

Yes use the bathroom when you are in the restaurant or tourist site. You cannot get a free pass to the bathroom by just stopping in… buy food or drink then they give you the code to enter the bathroom. Department stores you can stop by and not buy.

@TheColleendoll
@

You should take the train because it's the cheapest and quickest way to get around but use goggle and make sure you know the train closest to where you gotta go; for instance if you gotta take the R train make sure you know which way so you don't end up in Queens when you want to be in midtown Manhattan although when I met these tourists that did that they were in a part of Queens very close to the city ( Manhattan ) like 2 or 3 stops away. Goggle is your friend it will tell you what train to take to where your going.

One situation I found in New York..(year 2000)..was on a bus tour - double decker open top bus...Was a water balloon landed near where I was sitting (top deck),with quite an impact.....I was wondering if that's a common thing with thoes open top double decker tour busses 🤔...

Wolters world you definitely don't know New York diversity which consist of 5 boroughs of Manhattan Brooklyn Queens Bronx and Staten Island

We also have New York state which is Yonkers,Mount Vernon, White plains, Scarsdale, & Westchester county

So you wouldn't know about New York diversity until you see it which you gotta visits and learn about New York diversity

Yonkers & Mount Vernon connect with the Bronx

Queens is the largest out of the 4 other boroughs

GreAt video. I live here. Do take the subway. Do plan on walking. Don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk, don’t stop at the top of a staircase or escalator. Don’t take up the whole sidewalk. It is a fantastic and safe place. We have a lot lower crime rate than many places. Have fun. We do love tourists. And don’t forget to go to the theater. Not cheap, but so worth it

@jackfahey4610

I would love to travel to New York one day. That being said, it's not the TV shows and movies that make me scared of New York. It is the anecdotes I've heard from people that have lived there. My grandparents lived in New York when JFK was president and both of them witnessed police killings first hand. I imagine the crime today isn't nearly as bad as back then but still much worse than my own country.

Learn the difference between Express and Local trains in the subway. If you have to travel a long distance, using express trains will be a lot nicer.

NYC also has world class sport teams, ballet, opera, beaches, gardens and zoos! If you need a break for the hustle and bustle.

If you do decide to drive into NYC, do yourself a favor and park at Port Authority Bus Terminal. It's less than a block from the Lincoln Tunnel and connects directly to the Subway. It's especially easy to do if you make sure you're in the rightmost lane in the Lincoln Tunnel.

take the staten island ferry day or night or both, it's free and has some of the most incredible views of nyc

When looking for a hotel, street view in Google maps. 2 blocks can make all the difference between great place to be and.... Not great place to be in NYC. If there's a hotel a couple blocks away for $50 bucks less (or more), there's almost always a reason, and it's not that you've found a sweet deal.

That said, don't be afraid to go off the beaten path (for things other than lodging). There are great parks, museums, and restaurants everywhere in the city, check the side streets, check the boroughs. You'll find gems, have a more unique experience, and probably save money.

Love your videos, been watching for years. Life long Queens native of 51 years, so I know what I'm talking about! Is NYC as dangerous as it was in the 1980s/early 90s when I was a fearless niave kid/teenager/young adult exploring the city? Well, that's a tricky answer. Back in the bad ole days, crime was really condensed into certain areas of Central/North Bk, South Queens, most of the Bx and mostly upper Manhattan. Why? That's where the crack epidemic was hitting hardest. In black/hispanic low income areas. Drug dealers, gangs, you name it. But it was easy to avoid. The problem in 2023 is street crime is absolutely so random on any street in any borough. I live in what is considered the safer part of NYC in outer Queens past LaGuardia airport near Long Island, and we've never had gun violence, car jackings, home invasions and random street robberies like we've had since 2020 and the BLM riots. The main reason is criminals have no fear of getting caught or watched by the NYPD. The NYPD is no longer aggressively policing. It's not worth it to them. Risking another George Floyd type incident. So my advice to any tourist is...well, do the touristy things!!!! Stay in midtown or downtown Manhattan. Only take crowded subways and during the day. If you are out at night, make sure it's crowded. DO NOT venture off the beaten path. And I really wouldn't advise venturing into any of the other boroughs where most native NYers live because the criminal element is well hidden in those areas and is more likely to target a tourist. As in most cities, the locals quickly can identify someone who isn't from the area. And this especially goes for the outer boroughs of NYC. Stay safe folks.
