Michelle Alexander - Mass Incarceration in the United States

Video Overview & Insights

Michelle Alexander delivered the Frank Giesber Keynote Lecture for the 2012 Krost Symposium. Her talk - Mass Incarceration as a Tool of Social Control - highlighted many of the issues she examined in the book.

From the book's description: "The New Jim Crow" was initially published with a modest first printing and reasonable expectations for a hard-hitting book on a tough topic. Now, ten-plus printings later, the long-awaited paperback version of the book Lani Guinier calls "brave and bold," and Pulitzer Prize--winner David Levering Lewis calls "stunning," will at last be available.

In the era of colorblindness, it is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. Yet, as legal star Michelle Alexander reveals, today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against convicted criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans. Once you're labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination—employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits, and exclusion from jury service—are suddenly legal.

Featured on The Tavis Smiley Show, Bill Moyers Journal, Democracy Now, and C-Span's Washington Journal, "The New Jim Crow" has become an overnight phenomenon, sparking a much-needed conversation—including a recent mention by Cornel West on Real Time with Bill Maher - about ways in which our system of mass incarceration has come to resemble systems of racial control from a different era.

TLU's annual Krost Symposium brings together scholars, journalists, government officials, community leaders and others to discuss relevant and important issues of our time. Past symposium topics range from nuclear war to health care to the intersection of art and science to the theological concepts of suffering and salvation. The symposium is one element of the university's Krost Life Enrichment Program, established in 1977 to foster the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual development of TLU students and the broader community. The program's commitment to developing the whole person -- body, mind and spirit -- is a manifestation of, and central to, TLU's mission of preparing young women and men for lives of purpose through leadership and service to others.

One of the founding fathers of the Krost Life Enrichment Program and Krost Symposium was Dr. Frank Giesber, professor emeritus of economics, who served Texas Lutheran as academic dean when the idea of the Krost program and symposium became a reality. In recognition of Dr. Giesber's contributions to the establishment and on-going support of the Krost Program, the keynote presentation of each Krost Symposium is now titled the Frank Giesber Lecture.

Mass incarceration my foot! You do the crime you do the time and I don't care who you are, what your color. It all boils down to how you're brought up. And even then you have a choice because lots of people have had a crappy childhood, bad parents, lack of money and education and chose not to wind up in jail. I'm a perfect example. Brought up White Middle Class. Got out on my own and I went through a period of years where I had NO food! Literally not two nickels to rub together, starving. Did I steal food? NO! It would've been so easy but I didn't. I was taught NOT to steal. Did I go robbing people? Nope. My nature is not to bother people and I was taught to respect people, their property so no didn't go stealing anyone's stuff. Am I college educated? Heck no! School was always hard but I was never allowed to drop out. I wanted to and dad asked what will you do for a job. I said work for you. I was 16. He said no way! No high school diploma, and that's when I wanted to drop out, you don't work for me. So I stayed in school and it was hard and I earned my high school diploma. So I can't blame my education on anything to turn to crime. My paternal grandfather who was born in 1899 had to drop out of the 5th grade to work to help support his family. He didn't do crimes. He could read and write. He never went to Junior or High school or college. Times were tough during the Depression and he didn't turn to crime and he made sure his sons didn't who were born before the Depression in the 20's. They were taught just as I was taught not to hurt people and steal and my parents made it clear to my brother and I, you get in trouble with the law you get yourself out. No visitation, no lawyers they could well afford, no sympathy. So my brother and I never broke the law. We chose that! Anyone can be a criminal if they choose no matter your Class or color and you have the choice to put yourself in jail. And always the victims of the so called mass incarcerated are forgotten. No one cares how many they are, no one cares what gender they are, no one cares what color they are. Would there be outrage of say Rich people mass incarcerated for their crimes? People would cheer regardless of their gender and color. Income or lack of education is a great excuse. Your victims don't care how hard it was for you growing up! They don't care if you're illiterate, they don't care your color. Victims don't care if you had one or two parents divorce or no divorce. A victim of a crime is a victim of a crime. Mass victimization such as robberies, rapes, murders, no one seems to care or they say well this group has it done more to them. Well sorry but ALL victims matter! If you can't do the time don't do the crime! It's about time the victims of crime are noticed not the perpetrators as victims of crime come from all walks of life. And the funny thing about the discussion of mass incarceration. Let's educate them in prison! Let's not help parents give a good life, educate them. Let's rant about the problem but refuse to solve it by making parents responsible for better upbringing without excuses so we can cry oh poor jailed person who gets a college degree paid by taxpayers while the honest college goer is in debt until the grave. Mass incarceration doesn't bother me. Mass victims of crime does and that's ignored!

Hmmmm…let me think about this. USUALLY ANY “incarceration” event happens AFTER the ‘po po baby’ commits a CRIME. Almost NO ONE goes to prison without a long history of CRIMINAL behavior OR they did one REALLY BAD C R I M E. USUALLY MOST incarceration occurs AFTER a history of criminal “EVENTS” (you know, boring stuff like theft, battery, drugs, victims being INJURED, MURDERS, but I guess this looney tune Marxist thinks a CRIMINAL doing CRIMINAL things is just a victim in this horribly racist country.🤮) Only someone trying to destroy the fabric of our FREE society would blame the law abiding people for the personal CHOICES a selfish knob head makes just to gratify themselves with some easy cash or excitement. How embarrassing someone at this school of LOWER education either doesn’t understand and recognize this communist assault on America OR…..like WAY too many overpaid schools of indoctrination, they too are the ‘useful idiots’ Lenin bragged would pop up to destroy their own countries.
