Merkava - Tank History and Review

Honestly? I'm really impressed. I've been broadening my horizons in terms of my knowledge of the equipment used by other countries, and in particular I'm really impressed with the work France and now Israel puts out.

I don't think such a thing is possible. Every part of the world, every country is going to have their own specific mission parameters. And a tank is only as good as what you use it for.

I don’t like the Merkava as a MBT on MBT tank, but like you said, it’s not really designed for that role. It’s designed to fight against insurgent forces who’ll be using HEAT warheads instead of mostly APFSDS rounds. The Merkava can hold its own against modern MBTs, if it can get the first shot off. But if it can’t it’s screwed.

4:00 as an israeli tanker in active service, i can assure you the opposite, if you remove the 2 ammo storage units (each has 17 rounds) and leave the tank with 10 rounds in the turret, you can comfortably have 10 crew members (4 crew members + 6 other).
We mostly do this to "evacuation tanks", which are used to transfer injured during combat.

My take away is this (considering the now new 2023 Israeli-Palestinian war we'll be seeing more details on its role) the Merkava isn't the best tank in the world. Its the best tank for Israel, by that I mean, its not a multi-role tank, but a specifically made armored unit designed from the ground up as the perfect counter to soft targets and light-medium armored units.

as a Merkava 2 driver I can tell you, the amount of thought engineers put in to little things and details that make your life easier and safer (as much as possible for a battle tank) is astounding. and it is adjusted for desert terrain in Israel and not any other place.
And even though ive driven Merkava 3 and 4, mk 2 always felt like home ( probably cuz ive slept in it for 3 years :)
