Mechanics Rank Best & Worst Engines
Video Overview & Insights
We asked real mechanics to rank some of the most popular engines in the automotive world.
Not talking about the the old school Volvo engines is criminally underrated too, let alone the 4.0 engine from the dj jeep platform

How can you not know the VW AP 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 4-cylinder engines?!?!?
Tuned versions have even beaten American V8s in drag races.
Huge thanks to our experts!

When you showed a Tuareg in 1.9 TDI part I know you know shit

how about next time put "honda 4 cylinder" and we only talk about the D17 or L15 cuz wtf was that "BMW 6 cylinder" bruh
1 subscribe = 50+ hrsprs
No Ford 4.9L inline 6? Engine originally only came with 80 hersper in 1966. Add a turbo and boost to 16.5psi and hit 601hersper and 702 foot pounds of torque.

Then you have this guy(Keith Lopez’s Turbo Ford 300 I6 Wagon) turning a station wagon into a drag car with the 4.9l hitting almost 1k hersper. I know there are a lot of great engines out there and you cannot cover them all.

No Mitsubishi why? 🤔
@AustinTurner-k1wCan you turbo the Prius engine?
@amermeleitor5.0 is really that low?!
@xnight.shadexTDI should go right to jail.
@MehblehMusicGood idea to have guys rating engines they know nothing about.
@charlesreynolds2694Work in a machine shop, you'll totally have a different opinion on your list.
@sebastiancordova6839Everything you said about Subaru applies to BMW engines plus the tune ability of BMWs
@machoman7165Where's the ea888
@SirPapaJon4:37 This guy is a "mechanic" and he his thrown off by a straight 6 making lots of torque.🙄🤔
@BPzeropointTurbo the toaster, got it.
@generalizzzimoWhere does AMG fit in?
@betaomega04looking for small block ford. something like a 4.6L or 302
@theorphanobliteratorLs364
Truck motor. Iron block. LS3 top. All swappable from a ls1. Super budget friendly and ready for boost or bottle
Pretty sure the jeep 4.0 was part of their acquisition of amc motor group back in the 80s, and amc motors had a decent reputation. It deserves a c at least.
@MajickPalindromelittle do they know the only engine my dad has ever rebuilt was a rotory out of an rx8
@kaibencollet1191I drive a 2000 BMW 328i and it has the Inline 6 M52 motor. I believe it gives roughly 180-190HP stock. Not a bad engine at all. Definitely can take a beating, if anything i recommend that you do. For a daily, it's power plus the smoothness of the ride and great economy? Its definitely in a class of its own but right now I'm in the middle of turning it into a drift car so the economy is gonna suffer a little but it's ok...it's for the boys
@Im_EPKI drive a 2010 CR-V with the K20, that thing is FAAAAAAAST. I feel like a racecar driver in my little mom car 😂❤
@mvuanyeusiiReliability isn't a consideration?
@adamf663rotaries are NOT hard to work on, we did one back when i was in highschool in the late 90's/early 2k's, the guy got it cheap because the owners buddy told him the engine was blown.. it just needed apex seals..
now their is a trick to having the seals hold up better, both better seals are out there than what those came with, and, oiler mod, no more pulling oil from the oil pan... i have driven a datsun pickup from portland to seattle more than a dozen times... thing never broke down...we did get 4 flats from a police stop stick set they left when somebody evaded them.. but we got new, name brand tires (michelins infact) to avoid us suing them over their fckup... tuned out it was a f-ing kid in moms minivan they chased down who evaded them for over 90min...
they arent as complex nore hard to work on as the rep would have you think.. they are infact a bit more simple than many piston engines... if you swap the carb for an efi system(who wouldnt?)... they become alot easier to tune...
no torque but.. that truck.. is still running.. its had rebuild on the engine.. took us 2 days and alot of that was bs'ing.. as we worked, you have to put weight in the back to start in a gear below 3rd...on a 5 speed...i keep telling him to get it a better transmission... his daughter took that thing the moment she got her license and... even she wants to give it a more suitably geared trans...
one night we got pulled over with his street bike and a bunch of plants in the back... the state trooper heard us pass him and... needed to see wtf we did to that datsun... when he saw under the hood... "wtf is that?".... 'crate engine from an rx7 i paid 350usd for'... he bought a few of them at that price... all of them still running.. even the one that was in a geo sprint turbo wagon/hatchbach thing that got totaled... engine was recovered...
that first one we did that was just a rebuild was easier than we expected... the mazda shop guy stopped by and told us not to replace anything but the seals and he would refund the rest of what we bought.. the ONLY thing showing wear was the seals... had the guy brought him the car it would have been under 3k to have them do the seals and oiler mods, he helped my buddy do the oiler mod he had to order another kit.. once thats done they are alot less prone to problems from our exp.... the dont really like using modern engine oils for engine lube... you can also just do what my buddy did till he got the mod done... 2cycle oil into the gas tank when you fill up... makes a huge dif to how long they will just keep going... honestly im not even a mechanic im a computer geek who grew up wrenching and if somebody said "if you can rebuild this, you can have it".. provide the parts and tools and just stand back.. they are genuinely just.. not that hard to work on.. now carb tuning them can be a nightmare but so can tuning a carb on anything else.. i both love and hate carbs... you can fix a carb in the field.. if the efi fails... good luck fixing that in the field... but my gods they can be a nightmare to tune... also part of the fun though if im being honest... most of us tech/mech guys are at least a bit masochistic from my exp :P
Mopar Hemi's were not all the same. Current generation is more like an update of the LA engines. First gen Hemi's are 50's, 60's, second gen is late 60's early 70's. Current generation is a hemi in badge only. Not asying the LA engines are bad, Viper V10 is an LA.
@mrclownprinceNo love for the UZ platform, UZ1, 2, and 3 are beasts!
@ciiziinNo VR6
@alexbravofjell52552JZ is S tier no ifs and or buts. RB25DET isnt junk its just ok. Ive heard enough
@DJToneRII knew these guys were messed up as soon as they put the 2jz in A but the k20 in S
@04srt4champ"makes all the right noises" smashcut to a leafblower.
@8584zenderI'm not a mechanic and I know people love the 2JZ and LS but for me there's 3 great engines: k20, Buick 3800 and the Mazda 2.5 skyactive.
@s.gibson9329The Ford Lima 2.3 is a fucking beast
@ButterBoy-i3xYARIS ANYONE ?!
@alejandroaguilar9038Stopped watching right when you didn't put the 2JZ on S tier.
What experts lol
BMW’s B48 is a great engine - add big Turbo, forged pistons and enhanced thermo management- easyly up to 400 HP reliably. Put it in a cleaned F22 with buckets seats add better brakes decent coil over with more negative camber and tweaked alignment light wheels good semis and a lsd and you have a fantastic and quite affordable track tool.
@luciustitiusJeep 4.0 is a child of American Motors Company (AMC) used by jeep after chrysler bought them out ,,, its old reliable. And Simple other wise its a old iron boat anchor
@doctorwhodjMe watching the video while owning a c5 corvette and an 8th gen si... and a 350z
@rodrigodhein5641Ecoboost should be there too, those 2.3’s are solid
@D_herpBro, you did the 4 liter dirty! They run FOREVER. And yes, Sandro, you can turbo them, and they are fun as fk😂
I own several Jeeps, Cj-7 witha 4.2 and a 4.0 head swap, TBI injection. A TJ, and a Cherokee Sport with the 4.0. All of them have picked up parts for my FD😂😂😂
You did multiple RBs but not multiple Zs ex: UZ/1JZ/2JZ? 😢...😅
Also, Barra? Come on guys...
the jeep 4.0L disrespect is crazy 😭 i know some people with 400,000 on those things
@neodymium3229I appreciate the comedic value, had some great laughs. But B58 and Coyote in C-tier? Can't take this even remotely seriously.
@kbk9535my coyote is c tier :/
@natecartwright2319Lumping all BMW inline 6 engines into the same group is stupid; the B58 and S58 are arguably the best tuner engines of the 2010's/2020's by a landslide and as long as you keep up with maintenance they'll last as long as any Toyota or Honda engine.
@SlamTF2modern jeep sucks but no hate for the inline 6 4.0. you're crazy. one of the most bulletproof motors ever built and torque for days.
@aunderiskerensky2304Putting the TDI in the F or D tier is just dumb, this are the most reliable diesel engines ever made, they came stock with 106 hp and people where rushing more than 500 hp with does, 4 cilinders but they don't die
@nilfernandez2873Great motor, had great experience rev limiting the shit out of them. Yeah lets put bmw i6 in C tier
SMH
Honestly Honda first before Toyota is correct Honda are real sleeper u never see a 2 jz sleeper build but everyone always want some vtec
@BoostedEclassNo ZETEC. 0:20 😒
@dondeemanNissan SOHC VG30/33 never gets any love. Dirt cheap, parts for days, holds tons of boost/power. S tier fight me.
