MAGIC IS IN THE MIDRANGE (mix tutorial)
Video Overview & Insights
Mixing the Midrange for KILLER mixes!
Cutting EQ vs Boosting EQ. Showing the difference once and for all!
https://youtu.be/IzF9mg47g38
Every time I say “Lets see what’s happening“, what I mean is “Lets listen to what’s happening”. Poor choice of words on my part... also, the point of this video was not to prove that my my EQ moves sound better. The singular purpose of this video was to show people “how“ to focus on the mid range. Not how to EQ something. I came up on a console, and consoles don’t level match. So after thousands and thousands of songs for my career, I don’t do it either. Now if I was showing you guys the difference between two equalizers, of course I would level match. But for this application it wouldn’t have made my point any different. Hope this video helps you!

Firstly I thought what are you doing by boosting mids, sounds out of box, but then when you tuned lows and highs everything stood in its places and started sounding really great, thanks for the video

Wouldn’t you run into issues when boosting so much of the midrange. Like if you had a guitar and vocals in the midrange boost??

I hate when these “mixing engineers” on yt try to tell you that they have a magic trick to mix your vocals when the vocals they r mixing vocals that are already processed and 90% of the way done.

It's great to concentrate on getting your midrange right - but do be careful, - the Auratones can give you a false impression of how punchy your mix is. You need (as another commentator says, below) - several sets of different monitors, and headphones! Auratones may give the impression your mix really kicks, but it's falsely-enhanced by the auratones. (I've got 6 pairs of them left over from the 70s/80s - and I'm not getting rid of them!!!)

I tend to pull the midrange in a lot of elements down as there is a LOT of buildup in that range. I'm confused now, lol.

Please tell me! After mastering, the track sounds fine. But when I raise the midrange on the equalizer of an android phone, the strong distortion destroys my track. What could be the problem. The equalizer does not spoil other people's tracks. Thanks!

THANKS for this. I have tried this and when I get the bass sounding good in the mids (with an eq blocking below 200 and above 4k), it is WAY too loud when I play it normally (without an eq blocking things below 200 and above 4k. How can I make it translate better? I am REALLY trying to get more consistent mixes!

Thanks for this video! I watched it ages ago didn’t act on it. Last week I finally bought an Auratone 5C my mixes are night and day better after one day! My mixes sounded so congested on this speaker and taking the time to make them clear and punchy on this little guy made them leaps and bounds better. Cheers!

Hello sir. Thank you for useful information with so friendly flow. I’m voiceover artist, I use u87ai and also tube and ribbon mics with preamp Neve Shelford Channel. As a AD/DA converter I use RME UCX II. How much a difference in actual file and also in monitoring I’ll get with Lynx Hilo 2? Also I've heard an opinion that in UCX II almost premium AD, but DAC not so clear, so if I'll get external RME ADI-2 DAC FS I'll have a 90-95% same quality as Hilo 2? Or I shound get Hilo 2? Thank u.

Very nice !!!
@neptunerecords2872I started on a 4 track tape recorder and my first style of sound is still most requested. Even when i dont want it .... they still all do. Never let someone else dial you sound. To be unique, choose your own
@Promethian_Aham-JyotiNever let other make yoir own sound
@Promethian_Aham-JyotiYou a sound engineer.... Your Mic is too loud. My Tipp, make more gain to your Summ - Limiter.... Trust me! You get more louder!
@Marc-itI know this is old idk if you’ll see this, but I noticed you’re not cutting anything. Every song I mix there is an annoying instrument clashing with something that I can’t seem to get right. I end up scooping whatever is clashing to make room for it, but it takes too much of the sound away. How are you boosting in all the same range without anything clashing? Thanks!
@thedojomusicgroup1570I’m listening on my iPhone 13mini in ‘25 and hearing the difference. Point me and the rest of the lazy chronically late party-goers over to some of your mixes. I’m just a casual producer hoping to have an inground pool one day
@chrismusic1837I think cut about 200 and leave the highs without any cuts would be much better for both high and mids' cuz if u cut highs and leveled everything u will end up with too loud highs.
@mohamed_hosny49Just great!
@SverrekJohansenHow does the Pro Q4 updates change this approach?
@MrAusmoThanks for all the great info! But you link for the Auratone 5C is suspicious. EDIT ... Hmmm, I checked again and it was fine. Weird.
@kjvisual7!!!
@moripsmusic8715Also have a different types of midranges in the music is not something universal ......
@Braxton-y6yAlso the concept where the music industry work in the west is something unfitable with different cultures and communities ......... they are want something wrong from the peoples here . .......
@Braxton-y6yIs not only the magic in the midrange is and the clean power ..... the clean power can be a power of a
magician of a holyspiritual person or many different things about the culture of the place where you live .......
Hey I've got loads of unreleased stuff recorded if you need stuff to use for your videos.
I use a lot of violins and cellos so if you ever want to show how to mix those sounds give me a shout and will send you the stems see if they are any use 😊
When you boosted the mids on the drums it just got louder. It didn’t sit in the mix very well.
@Bulletman426I really liked this video and your way of presenting. Subscribed.
@aaronbaldwin2845Wow man cool tip. One thing you didnt mention I bet would work is to compare your mix with a reference with the mixbus EQ on!! That probably would work too!
@klaatuklaatu1Please translate indonesian ,,,😂
@samaradehoy4545Don't you have to be careful, so everything isn't clashing in the same frequency range? I have always kept the drums and the bass in the low, to low mid frequency range, vocals and guitars in the mid to high frequency range. If any frequency range becomes too crowded it will not sound good.
@Fl_Music_ProducerWould you extend this concept to tracking / the processing that’s obviously gone into these stems before you got them?
I’m excited to mess around with this concept, but I’m used to doing some pretty aggressive EQ work pocketing my kicks/bass guitars. I can totally see how this approach makes more sense in bus EQs and master bus, but I’m not sure if I should be leaving my individual tracks completely bare beforehand.
