living in san francisco vs. nyc | one year later

Unpopular opinion: SF transit is nicer. While NYC has unparalleled transit coverage, the subway itself is really not the best. It's very dirty, the tunnels are a cellular dead zone, and there are frequent service advisories and weekend closures. In contrast, the BART and Muni in SF are very clean, have full 5G service in the tunnels, trains run well on the weekends, and most of the buses are electric and in general, felt nicer than NYC buses. Also, the BART to SFO beats any of the trains to EWR, LGA, or JFK. I never needed to Uber in SF and it felt very walkable and more pleasant to walk around than NYC especially with all the beautiful scenery in SF. So I would actually give the reward for walkability and transit to SF.

You have beaches in NYC and can go surfing. Im from the west coast and love NYC much better. You can get out in nature in the city a lot more places then central park. It sounds like you don't know the city very well.

Sf crowd is older and more passive and lower energy, the city was pretty good before VID and there could be a valid argument about SF vs NYC before , but now , it's uncomparable, SF is a great city as is , but it's just needs more time to recover and becomes the city again, it is the more beautiful one of the 2 , hands down

I think you're underselling SF public transit. Muni buses+muni metro+BART is a pretty comprehensive system. It's not NYC but great for US standards imo

I think the reason why more homeless people are sheltered in NYC is because the winters are too harsh to survive outside. NYC has a law where they have to provide shelter to anyone who asks for it. SF doesn’t have any laws to guarantee shelter for everyone.

I had a friend who moved to SF from NYC. She eventually moved back saying “you can’t talk to a view.” I’m from Chicago and prefer over SF. Although I prefer NYC over Chicago.

SF has the most dense neighborhood/community in America and has the highest walk score in America and is the most uniformly urban city limits end to end in a way better setting. U dont need a car in SF. SF public transportation ranks 2nd behind NYC only on the actual rankings. NYC is bigger and busier as a whole with more options of things. It deoends what you like.

Love this. I lived in SF for 10 years with no car, zero problem for me. Plus, cars get broken into a lot there and parking can be a pain.

You did not describe S.F. Properly or you haven’t been anywhere besides N.Y.and S.F.

There is hardly any nature in S.F. I was born and raised there. So.Cal is way better if you like nature. It rains quite a bit in S.F. Except in the summer. They have had severe floods. It fairly rains in so.cal, so you have lots of fires. I don’t recommend L.A. but So.Cal is way more affordable. San Francisco and surrounding areas are very dangerous. The rate of homelessness in California is higher because our weather is better. We have more homeless people in California than in any other state. If you are a young male, it’s not as dangerous, but it’s just a matter of time before you have a crime committed against you. The police will help you if you are shot, but, other than that, there’s nothing. You have to leave a voicemail when you call 911. You will see naked people for sure. Poop, on the streets. It is a place of extremes. If you love nature, beautiful beaches, then move to So.Cal

A nuanced thought to add about nature, public transportation, driving, and the overlap. Like you said, one huge upside of NYC is the excellent public transportation and not having to have a car, but at the same time it limits how much you can explore without transit around NYC. There are tons of intense hiking options, beautiful beaches [a lot better for sunbathing/swimming than nor cal imo!], lakes, rivers that exist year round, etc in NJ and upstate NY that are super close to NYC (similar to Santa Cruz distance or especially 4 hours like Yosemite or Tahoe) however the reality is that many people in SF have cars that allow them to leave, while many people in NYC do not.

Living in an outer borough may make it easier to have a car, and in that case, those things would be much more acceptable.

My take is that hiking/outdoor variety in CA is 1000x better, barely can compare even though I love the hiking in upstate NY, along the deleware water gap, and elsewhere surrounding nyc. However, in my humble opinion, beaches in NJ and on Long Island, while crowded and maybe less aesthetic than the cliffy nor cal beaches, they are SO MUCH warmer and nicer to lay out/sunbathe, sand is so much softer, and water is so much warmer for swimming (in summer) vs the cold pacific ocean!

As a NJ-born NYC loyalist and lover AND avid CA hiker/camper who moved to the bay area a few years ago and is looking to move to SF in the coming weeks, awesome video. I love both cities so much.

I <3 SF. I get around on MUNI here with no problems (though I do wish we had better 24 hr service--also, SF shuts down too early, especially compared to NYC).

Come on Nightlife in NYC vs SF cannot be compared at all. Yes there are parties and secret spots in SF but it’s still 1/1000 compared to NYC. Also people are radically different, since in sf people going for after parties are mostly burners.
