Living in Japan: $1,113/Month Tokyo Micro Apartment Tour

Video Overview & Insights

Living in Japan in a 323sqft micro apartment in Tokyo - $1,113/month. In this tour, I’ll show you a unique balcony with a very special view.

Why shouldn’t you use soap in that little handwashing sink by the toilet?
The water from that sink goes into the toilet tank. So if you use soap there, the next time you flush, the toilet could end up full of bubbles. 😅🫧
That’s why I don’t use that little sink. I wash my hands with soap at the regular sink instead.

☆★☆ About This Micro Apartment ☆★☆

*Monthly rent: ¥180,000 in total (¥165,000 rent + ¥15,000 common service fee).

How big is it in square meters? It used to say that in your videos, if I'm not mistaken.

— @j-n-y

*Location: Just a 3-minute walk from Asagaya Station, with access to the JR Chuo Line.🚃

*Building: This apartment is in a reinforced concrete designer building completed in 2025. It is a top-floor 1LDK unit with a spacious roof balcony, free internet, and a clean, modern atmosphere.🏠✨

This is such a great apartment! It's practically perfect! I would live there happily. The only drawback is that it's on the 4th floor with no elevator.

— @peluso4oso

*Unique Point: You can see trains up close from this balcony. 😅🚃

I loved the layout, but I'm very curious to how loud the train is with the window opened vs closed. Otherwise...loved it.

Good size apartment!!!
I love trains! I live near some tracks right now, but they are on the opposite side of the building so I can't see the trains from my window, so I have to go outside to watch them

How does drainage on the balcony (from rain or the faucet) work? Guessing there's something in that white corner nearest the tracks?

For the most part this place is well laid out and very functional! The places for the washer and fridge are recessed, and the kitchen sink and cooktop provide a bit of prep space. The outdoor area is spacious….but the trains! OMG.

This apartment is very nearly perfect 😢 why does it have to be next to trains?! 😭 I live in an apartment very close to trains, but not quite this close. It’s horribly noisy. I think a lot of people underestimate how noisy trains are when you are very close to them. You feel the vibrations through the apartment. Can’t watch tv or have a conversation with the windows open. It’s not fanciful, it is really tiring. 😢

This apartment could be decent for a salary worker with a kid. Just curtain off the living room when it's to be used as a bedroom. Alternatively, put up a divider screen in the living room to give the parent a permanent separated sleeping space, while still having a common space to have family meals.

If all micro apartments were this spacious I'd go for minimalist living, especially a separate bedroom and balcony. Except, I eould not have plants. I have a brown thumb. 😂

I wasn't surprised by the rent being that high because of the full bedroom with a good sized closet and balcony, and the nice wood design throughout the apartment instead of concrete, and the nice neighborhood - although being next to a train should have brought down the cost a bit. I do like the apartment. It is easy to arrange furniture, it's sunny throughout the living room, bedroom and even the kitchen because of the nice wood divider that lets sunlight through to the kitchen. Even with the periodic trains passing, I would sit out on the balcony and enjoy the sun with a cup of tea. Nice apartment. I'll be here for the next apartment. ☺

Appalled at the tiny ‘kitchen’ once again! However, the living space, bedroom and balcony are quite nice compared to other apartments we’ve seen.

Sehr stilvoll gemacht.

If the soundproofing is good, I would love to live here. The only drawback is 4th floor with no elevator.

That “Do you like trains?” question was sneaky. 😂

At first the apartment looked standard to most of the micro apartments you have shown us. The stepping out onto the spacious balcony made the apartment much less claustrophobic. I was wondering where to place the furniture including the bed then you surprise us with not just a separate bedroom but a spacious closet! I really liked this apartment. ❤️

Awwwwww, I'm disappointed that you showed the price right away in the title instead of near the video's end. ☹ And so few currency comparisons...that's a shame, too.

It's a very nice apartment, but now that you and others mentioned about why one shouldn't use that sink over the toilet, that's something that I couldn't live with. And if I have someone over, I wouldn't want them having NO soap on their hands before they leave it...soooo, the bathroom/toilet area is a bust. Everything else, though? Very nice! Even with the trains going by so frequently. LOL

Instead of plants or yoga on the balcony, I would have a patio set with two chairs and a table (perhaps with a parasol sunshade) along with a small charcoal grill. That would be my lounging and eating spot on nice days.

Great apartment, one of your best. Still a bit high up for me though.

Absolutely shocked there was a bedroom. Seems like they could have used half the balcony space to extend a bit of the living & bedrooms though. The price seems crazy but I guess you are in a MAJOR city.

Hi Usui, you've found us another great apartment, well laid out facilities, a separate bedroom and spacious balcony beside the main living area. I used to live this close to a railway and you soon learn to ignore the trains so noise should fade away. Very nice, I wish I lived closer.

I could live here, except that hauling groceries up four flights of stairs would get old very fast. As for yoga, I'm an old lady and I wouldn't do yoga anywhere.

1:18 4th-floor walk-up with no elevator, next to none kitchen storage, an unjustifiably (given the level of daily outside noise) high rent....apartment is nice, but still a no for me. 🙂‍↔️

You can’t use regular soap for these types of toilets, as it will start to mess with the toilet plumbing over time. They are for rinsing your hands only, so the best solution is to wash with water and then have a spray bottle of hand sanitizer nearby to disinfect your hands after flushing and rinsing. I have one of these toilets and the real bathroom sink is downstairs 😅. So that’s how I keep things clean. Anyway, it’s so nice to have an outdoor space to relax but rent is getting more and more expensive in Tokyo nowadays don’t you think, Usui San?
