Liverpool SACK Slot, Iraola In!

Video Overview & Insights

Josh Williams: https://x.com/DistanceCovered

Klopps football was like a jaeger bomb and packet on a nightout. slots first season was like vodka redbull, (still energetic enough to let you see through the night but no where near as intense as Klopps football a lot more controlled), Slots second season was whiskey and coke, amazing at the start but will make you tired towards the end. Only way I can describe it

I'm a big Liverpool fan I have fond memories of slot. He inherited a team in transition and won the league we finished top of the league in the Champions League so I'm not here to throw him under the bus there was a lot of Misfortune that happened to our team unfortunately he was a victim of that but at the end of the day we won the 20th title with him that will always be remembered fondly so you can miss me with throwing them under the bus I will never do that it was unfortunate how things transpired and turn around but that's at the end of the day slot will be remembered as one of the managers that brought us number 20

I think we won’t last season by default, competition was poor and Klopp left us a pretty strong team. However I said it at the time, the ball we played wasn’t great - I never thought ā€˜wow we’re amazing’ best ball I saw us play was against Real in pre-knock out table

Suffice to say circumstances flattered slot and I think we saw that this season even after spending insane money

Konate has not renewed the contract so he was clearly gonna leave on free. How Liverpool let it happen is bonkers.

ofc his tenure will age better, because the title win is set in stone & performances fade. but that doesn't change how bad the performances were after those first 9 months in the league. bad football principles badly implemented. but he got over the line for a title, so he will be etched forever rightly.

We as Liverpool fans have had all season to stew on what's gone right and wrong over the last two years with Slot. The best way I can sum it up is that 24/25 was the perfect storm in a good way, and 25/26 was the perfect storm of everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. We'll forever remember him for his achievement in winning the Premier League and wish him all the best in the future but I think it was the right decision at the end of the day.

@seandoyle7167
@

There's been so much talk about the squad not being good enough and not having the depth, but he sanctioned for good squad options like Elliot, Morton and Quansah to leave the club as he wanted a "smaller group"

@rhysadams4182
@

Vague as usual. Nothing substantial said

@kehsihba09
@

I just wonder...had a team to play a campaign WITHOUT.a PRESEASON training... would the manager be criticized and sacked if he would get the 5th place without playing exciting football
..?!?! Because THAT exactly happened: Liverpool SKIPPED preseason because of Zota's death...Players were there, physios were there but, nobody had his mind in training.. These things NEVER happen. You have to go 60 years before to find a similar case. So how a team can be criticized for something do rare...?
Unbelievable..

I think history will be kind to Slot's tenure, because it will show 1 title in 2 years. It won't show the day to day failures and bad performances and poor man management. That being said, he did break a fair few bad records this season.

@HobbesCandie
@

Another reason he's gone is we've broken almost every negative record in our history just this season.

@hofspades4412

Slot’s tactics was never performed well in premier league, in first season he was lucky to inherit klopp’s well oiled machine and both man city and arsenal failed. So Liverpool easily won the league, any sensible manager would win the league in that situation. But signes are showing that team is struggling and performance was never same like before, a lot fans saw that and pointed it, but Slot ignored, management ignored with the height of winning league. And then second season come with real challenges, his inabilities became obvious..what’s happened was that that’s much simple.

@NaingHtunLin1
@

18:05 Josh thinks he’s walked?🤣🤣🤣 he’ll never get a job even half as good as Liverpool, he’s the luckiest man on earth to even have been here this long.

@ross370
@

I think his tenure will age well once the horribleness of this season fades in the memory. Getting rid of him now before it gets even worse and toxic will ensure this—doing it now means rational Liverpool fans are ok will him leaving while still able to extend the gratitude and respect he deserves. There's also massive scrutiny on the men upstairs (Hughes, FSG people) for their role in how the squad building, indicative of a general awareness that this was not all on Arne.

@jxshsewell
@

Everyone seems to think this is a last minute thing from what Iv read and listened to. I think it’s as simple as they made a decision to review candidates weeks ago and agreed to make a decision once the season was done.

Iraola, who Hughes knows, and hired previously being confirmed out the door mid April as well?

@salexa171
@

Love listening to Josh. Always attempts to understand why things go the way they go. Unlike the knuckles draggers who only want to scream "Slot out" repeatedly.

@JohnDoe-mi9pn
@

The entire comment section after the brentford game for mo and robbos goodbye was slot out. I’m sure someone looked at it and said 60k people spamming slot out and slot is just sitting by himself on the bench isn’t a good look

@Etan1122
@

Liverpool fan here. I think it’s the correct decision and I’m so glad you mentioned Jota when you did. I think it’s been an incredibly tough season for the manager and a dressing room that’s almost impossible to control. That being said the decisions we were seeing on the pitch were inexcusable. There were many reports towards the end of the season talking about the manager and the board having an end of season review. I think what’s happened is he has doubled down that he wants to play his style of football. Slow, technical build up, very Dutch, and that’s what cost him because whilst there may be nothing wrong with that. It’s the antithesis of what Liverpool fc is about. I’m happy with the decision and I’m grateful to Arne for what he’s done. But I’ve gone from a feeling of dread about next season to a real excitement of what a high intensity manager can bring next season with the players we have.

@TheFalseni9
@

Enjoy hearing your thoughts James. Didn't even play this one, just put it on so I could comment about what a bellend you got on. Any other liverpool fan and I'd probably listen to the whole thing.

@tanishqrahuja987
@

1st mistake buying frimpong when you had salah. Its an obvious clash of playstyles.

2nd mistake was wirtz.

Sadly their youth miracle is still too young and the older youth players arent good enough.

@HEmainMain
@

People need to start bringing up Mo Salah having arguably the single best individual performance over a single season in premier league history as the reason we won last years prem.

He even said to Slot, let me do my thing and ill win you the league. Then he goes and gets more goal contributions than any player ever. Instead of the slot trophy is should be the Salah trophy.

Game after game of rubbish football saved by a Salah moment of magic.

@bfree8563
@

Imo the problem with slot is that I just don’t see a way back for him. For me, he earned another season at the helm but ultimately if you break down how he fixes this mess, it’s either 1.) he buys a whole new team/core or 2.) he magically gets a personality change and the players like him. Since clearly 2 ain’t happening and he hasn’t earned the right to completely rebuild the whole squad, that’s why I believe it was time to go for him. I do think we will look fondly on this period in years to come, and I’m sure there’s a job out there where he’ll be brilliant. But it just goes to show how important those large voices in the dressing room are and Arne never truly had their backing it seems.

@lfcyeezus
@

How his time is perceived will depend on how it goes after. If iraola does well then I think his legacy will only shrink

@beanoboy62
@

I think just because it’s a short term success doesn’t mean it’s a failure

He was a short term success and handled Jota’s passing with class but he just wasn’t the man for the long term and that’s fine

@kd5973
@

Liverpool have played horrible football since the PSG loss last season, we won the league because Salah,VVD and Szobo carried the horrible structure enough to get us over the line. So I don't think it's fair to give Slot any excuses, he had to go.

@youssefhossam327
@

You’ll see this next season that Slot wasn’t the biggest issue. The players aren’t going to magically find form. Slot got the best out of the players one season and then the worst out of them the next. If your cars running great yesterday and then it’s won’t run at all today, is it a driver issue? Or maybe there’s something else going on under the hood

@damonbennett8376
@

After the title win, there was a division of why they won: Klopp's squad vs Slot's tactical tweaks. It's a bit of both. 2024, Slot was incredible. 2025 onwards, including that half of the title winning season, things changed. It's those changes, the reported lack of intensity in training, the lack of intensity on the pitch. We knew the season was a writeoff due to the summer, but they didn't look like they wanted to do better. Slot dealt with a difficult summer very well. It's purely the direction that needed changing. Slot is a good manager, has good ideas of how football should be, but he wasn't adaptable to the awful bus parking, and there was an obvious lack of motivation overall. A new manager will set things in motion for something better

@TheOtherSeanConway
@

His communication was the problem for me

@utah9650

@kevinmalone8564

Since when was 27/28 seen as over the hill?

@MichaelJones-by9ng
@

Even from a lot of Liverpool fans that were very vocal about him leaving there seems to be a lot of respect for him now he’s gone.

For me I think it’s the right decision, but I am sad that it didn’t work, he won us a league and got us through a really tough time. I hope he’ll be remembered for those things rather than the pretty dire football we saw at the end there.

@antony558
@

I wasn't really Slot in or Slot out, but I'm glad they made a decisive decision now, rather than wait until part way through the season like United would. He had an entire season to prove he had answers to our issues, and unfortunately wasn't able to. I'm going to look back positively on his tenure, but my instinct is that history will look kindly on this decision.

@DannyHodge95
@

There’s so many things. Being the only team Getting outrun by Chelsea. No pressing or energy. Persistence with Gakpo. His treatment of quansah and chiesa. How lucky we were to get champs league.

@AntmanArma
@

Maccalister was a Klopp signing, and played Klopp football, so don’t really agree with the take he can’t do it. In the year Liverpool won the title, maccalister was arguably our best player, in fact if people remember (footy fans have such short memories), szobo was thought as the one who would lose his place to wirtz.

@revstew22
@

most reassuring part is that he can bring in 2 wingers and a midfielder of his choice, which should be enough to make his style of play work. This season we had a lack of press all round but there’s players there who can press, then if not he can bring his in

@GoTuahDaMoon
@

I think Slots time at Liverpool will look better as time goes on. League win in his first season then virtually an impossible job in his 2nd. Jotas passing, sky high expectations after winning the league, massive squad turnover all just make it so difficult to be successful in this 2nd season. From preseason onwards the preparation won't have been ideal with players and staff grieving. Transfer sagas like isak dragging on longer than we all would've liked. The cards he was dealt really weren't great. The main thing that's really let slot down is the type of football we've been playing and how he's spoken to the press. If the football was exciting and he was more enthusiastic and excited about Liverpool when speaking I think a lot of fans would still be on his side, the way we were with Jürgen when we had a couple of poorer seasons

stop getting this guy on he’s annoying

@OddityHQ
@

Slot deserves alot of credit for his dignity is all the tough situations.

@um931
@

All those excuses are so poor. An elite coach coaches through factors and gets the best out of what he has. Klopp did & Pep did. On the pitch we looked worse week by week.

@bigsmoke9876
@

This season was saved by the first few games where we scored super late goals or the worldie free kick v arsenal. If you take them moments of brilliance by the players not slots you could take the 1st matches as draws which at the time felt fair for the games. Take those 8 points off and we actually finish 10th. So the season looks good because we finished in champions league spot but the performances didn't match the league position.

@24Qu4v3rs
@

I think Salah has had a massive impact on this season's lack of energy/performance/cohesion. Contract signed, performance dropped off, then he dropped a bombshell before AFCON which blows everything up, then again a week before leaving. Maybe he's been creating an atmosphere in the dressing room all season

@matthewbrears2129
@

Too much happened in the last year for Slot to manage well. Jota, massive money spent, which suddenly put pressure on everyone, and then massive players underperforming. Salah seems to have been undermining the manager for the entire season, while also being woeful after his contract was renewed. Van Dijk too. I wanted to see Slot given another season after Salah left

@matthewbrears2129
@

Slot might have had to go because of results. He 100% had to go because of the lack of intensity, sitting back and getting hunted down like weak prey at home, at anfield, by lesser teams is by far the most embarrasing thing I have ever witnessed in my 20 years as a liverpool fan. The Chelsea game at anfield is where I knew he was out, the meekness after the 1-0 goal was the antithesis of what should happen, Chelsea was vulnerable, afraid, and we scored once then cowered like a hurt animal for the rest of the game hoping they wouldn't finish us off.

When I heard the news I high fived my son

@kennyobrienaiti
@

Thank God he is gone. He is up there with Roy Hodgson for providing the most terrible football in recent LFC history

@kennyobrienaiti
@

I have nothing against Andoni Iraola, but I don't understand how some fans are acting like he's automatically an upgrade over Arne Slot. Slot had already proven he could win the Premier League, manage the pressure of a massive club, handle expectations, and compete while playing every 3–4 days across multiple competitions. Iraola has done a good job, but managing a club like Liverpool is a completely different level of pressure and scrutiny.
One disappointing season shouldn't erase everything Slot achieved. If you're sacking a title-winning manager, the replacement should be an obvious upgrade, not a manager you're hoping might become one. Too many fans got caught up in wanting more exciting football and forgot that winning is what matters most. It's easy to demand intensity and entertainment when you're playing once a week; it's much harder when you're competing on multiple fronts all season long.
The same fans who had no patience with Slot better give Iraola that same energy when things get difficult, because no manager wins every game and no team plays perfect football for an entire season.

@najiibhassan9807
@

Sorry to hear that Josh is getting a hard time. The sad side of social media. Keep going because the analysis is informed, insightful and thought provoking.

@robertcowell1324
@

12:13 are you saying sacking Slot was illogical? We literally had a historically bad season. Didn't they have something like 20 losses in a season? Not to speak of the fact that there was no improvement and even victories were too close, like we barely made it.

You say something similar at 15:54. Odd sentiment

@keepo789
@

Opinion on Slots tenure will be judged depending on what the next manager does. If Iriola can get slots signings playing anywhere near their potential and getting better results overall it is going to make last season look even worse despite any mitigating circumstances. Conversely if the team continue on this downward trend it will be more like Ange being viewed much better after Frank and Tudor.
