LEGAL-ISH DISCLAIMER

Have to wonder if the real underlying issue is monopoly sports, rather than open sports with promotion and relegation. Uk has always had legal bookies and I can't think of any widespread issues like this. Real competition takes care of itself

Legal sports betting makes it easier to catch the illegal bets. It's counter-intuitive, I know.

I watch sports when I go to a bar. I pick my team at that time. If they lose, I care until I leave and then donโ€™t think about itโ€ฆ at all.

More User Perspectives

@

the NBA noticed that people that bet on the game were the only ones that watched the game.

@kevinoverholtzer3126
@

what if the pitcher is throwing a rigged pitch and the hitter is betting that he will have a strike on his first pitch at the same time it starts to look like that South Park episode.

@kevinoverholtzer3126
@

could you imagine being a player and having a chance to make big money just by rigging one pitch not even a whole game just one pitch.

@kevinoverholtzer3126
@

Sports betting is against the law in California. And hopefully it stays that way. Because this is really bad for society. I don't really gamble that much anymore. I learned my lessons. So, it's easy for someone like me to say this. Again. This is really bad for society. Hopefully, we can put the genie back in the bottle.

@94115david
@

I suddenly feel blessed that I never liked watching sports and am not interested in gambling

@ggkirhuyds4731
@

Itโ€™s crazy I got two sports betting ads watching this lol.

@sethjackson3078
@

Itโ€™s sad to hear my coworkers who talk about sports constantly, and most of their conversations revolve around sports betting. Youโ€™re now in the minority if you just follow a sport or a specific team because you enjoy it. Itโ€™s now primarily just gambling and thatโ€™s pretty sad.

@felixfinesse328
@

To my understanding, one of Cleveland's pitchers who gave money for information on specific pitches made something like $15,000. He was in line to make an eight-figure deal in his next contract. I can't comprehend the mind-numbing stupidity of that. It's like lighting a $100 bill on fire so you could pick up the nickel you see on the ground.

@iandhr1
@

"Fantasy projections may speak again if certain individuals in Florida post anything online." You made me spit out my coffee.

@iandhr1
@

Online betting has destroyed WAY more than just sports. No one understands, the majority of sports are like wrestling given how fixed most of the results are.

But next to NO ONE understands that the predecessor to all this was Moneyball. Billy Beane was doing most of what Legal Eagle says here, but he was VERY clever about it.

@SirJoelsuf1
@

the whole Billups arrest seemed over-dramatized, complete with scripted podium appearances. If he was selling out his team, franchise and job by leaking Blazer info as head coach, of corse that should be fully investigated and punished. But if it was just about his appearance at shady poker games, I think that charge would be Very hard to prove as a face guy who just shows up

@urthpainter
@

The UdotS is so stupid.

@thomasdeas1941
@

And in the short time frame since this video came out, we already have a new scandal and arrests for college basketball players shaving points, rigging games, etc., as part of a betting conspiracy.

@TheJingles007
@

I remember a female friend asking why I liked sports, I told her that you could trust the outcomes. Even when there was a questionable call that decided the game (and this is me talking as a forever salty Detroit Lions fan), you could understand why that call was made (bias towards winning teams).

Gambling messes with that trustworthiness. Suddenly you have to wonder whether that ref call was by the rules, an honest bias towards winners, or coming through on a bet made by a friend to cover some bad spending (like bad bets on last week's games he didn't ref in).

@godozo
@

Good thing it was just Donaghy and none of the other refs...

@guy4835
@

What gets me is that people seem think these gambling influencers are actually gambling with their own money and not a bankroll provided by the casino.

@ninjaswordtothehead
@

Nothing will change until something bad happens to an athlete or famous person at the hands of someone who lost everything. Then suddenly it will be a problem.

@ninjaswordtothehead
@

Itโ€™s beyond this to me. Even if there was no illegal bets, the reason people are gambling more is thereโ€™s no hope. I canโ€™t make ends meet, so Iโ€™ll bet money and hope i can cover rent and keep my kids eating. Billionaires extract their billions from the economy whatโ€™s left over, we all struggle to buy food.

@biffbobfred
@

A friend of mine admitted to me he had a sports betting addiction. But wasnโ€™t until after I had introduced him to the Thrillz betting app. I thought I was doing something harmless because he had introduced me to mobile gaming platforms that pay you a small amount of money for playing mobile games like Monopoly GO or Animals and Coins.

But it was this friend who made me sensitive to the dangers of this online betting stuff that is now everywhere. The developers are literally tempting people every day to jump off the cliff.

@DaRyteJuan
@

1:33 โ€When you hear about sports bets, you can basically think in three buckets. First, money lines โ€ฆโ€
You probably should have added parlays as a fourth category which is a derivative of the three underlying buckets.

@DaRyteJuan

Iโ€™d like a video in the same nature as this one about prediction markets like kalshi, and how your rigging and insider info argument applies to politics

@ic3koldlynxyt192

My favorite NHL team has a pregame segment for FanDuel, intermission reports sponsored by FanDuel, and in-game break off segments dedicated to FanDuel bets.

The worst part is that Iโ€™m not narrowing things down with those descriptions. FanDuel is also in Canada, as anyone who listens to The Sheet can tell you.

Forget sportsbetting. There is a much bigger version of this problem in the new Polymarket-type markets where people can bet on things they can directly or indirectly influence. These aren't relatively inconsequential sports team results. They are political, policy, legal, etc. decisions that have real life consequences.

@hunterhenryk
@

You are absolutely correct. It is out of hand and must be stopped.

@dwmatl
@

Online betting hasn't destroyed sports in the rest of the world, sounds like a US problem.

@ledbythereaper

Saying Vegas sets lines based on publicly available info is hilarious

@Mikey-vx6ro

omg...this is another example of "enshitification".

@94115david

Remember we only know this is happening because people beat the company. I can almost guarantee all these websites do the same exact thing but in reverse. They get their inside info but if 70% of people lose they pop champagne, if 70% win itโ€™s an investigation and unfair.
