I’m an oil painter who paints in thin layers. I’ve been thinking of trying acrylics since they go dry more quickly and you’ve convinced me to try it. I’m just concerned about mixing the same colors each time I paint. With oil paint I can premix a ton of colors, put my palette in a Masterson’s sta-wet palette box, stick it in the freezer, and my paint will last for weeks that way.

I've learned these tips as the years have gone by. However, the tip to keep the acrylic paint wet longer by placing the paint in the tray...hat's that's new to me. I just recently learned it.

I use a mirror I found outside and a spray bottle of water instead of a stay-wet pallet. If I want to stop, I cover it with a plastic box. Even allows me to create very flexible consistencies.

Oh my goodness that stay wet pallete or whatever it is called I was sitting here leaning forward mouth agape… blew my mind. I have a refrigerator in my living room, which is my studio, and I put my stuff in there lol. Oh my gosh, I need one of those so badly.

Very good advice. However, how fast acrylic paint dries depends on where you live. I am in the American Southwest where the air is very dry. I have to use a wet palette to keep my paints workable.

Also be prepared before you start. Plan out what your painting and prepare the paint on the canvas.

I’ve been watercolor for years and I am so frustrated and want to try acrylic painting.

Thank you for these tips and saying that it's ok to take your time when it comes to painting. I've been told that if I want to make a living out of my art then I need to get faster at painting. I've been told that painting and doing art in general isn't a career but a hobby. Basically, a lot of people saying a lot of things that make it hard to even pick up the brush. And then I spiral thinking what I am even good for, I have no skills that I enjoy making a living, yada yada yada. I'm nowhere near your level of expertise but I do know that if I keep practicing and doing research, I will one day. Hearing you say that you don't need to rush really put things into perspective for me. I don't need to act like a machine and produce art at a fast pace. It's ok to make mistakes and it takes time to develop skills as well as putting your name out there to be discovered. For now, I think I will just make art to make art because it's something I've always enjoyed doing.

Unpopular opinion but I like when a little white canvas shows throughout the painting. Modern art is so focused on perfection thanks to the proliferation of digital art, but a little white showing is a signal to me that the art was done by hand and by a human and without digital tools that make art easier to do. I personally don’t like pinpoint perfect art. It looks soulless.
