Largest Economies Ranked: Data from 1580 to 2025
Video Overview & Insights
In this video, I ranked the world's leading economies over time (from 1580 to 2025) using Nominal GDP data. I based my analysis on the IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) database, supplemented by reputable sources like the Maddison Project Database for historical consistency.
Sorry if I missed some flags, I promise I know more than just USA and Canada.
Keep in mind, historical figures before 1900 are rough indicators of relative economic size and order of magnitude only. The numbers represent Nominal GDP in the current US dollars of their time, without any inflation adjustments. In cases where standard datasets had gaps, I used estimated growth rates and alternative sources to fill in the blanks.
The "current USD" value is a highly theoretical construct for comparison, especially for periods before the US dollar existed. I scaled historical economic reconstructions using a nominal anchor. For example, England's estimated national income in contemporary pounds, then converted to a USD-equivalent based on its metallic content.
You should make one inflation adjusted

Hi, I'm Sasha.
Was surprised to see how fast the USSR sank but then I realized it was the break up of USSR at that time.
I crunch numbers, play with data, and create cool visuals. If you enjoy my work, a little support can get me a coffee and a cookie for my baby girl, Eva โ๐ช

@AprilscanvasIn the Modi administration, India came back to the list..๐๐
@prajaram1918I remember that even in 1997 we were saying in the University (that I was going back then) that India is a rapidly expanding economy with big growth opportunities. Now in 2026 it is the fifth economy and maybe soon it will even be the third biggest!

@its0073Seeing these metrics ranked in real-time really highlights the gap between the USA and the rest of the world right now. Looking forward to seeing how 2027 projections change this.

@anthonymorris5084Interesting how Russiaโs adoption of socialism propelled them to second in the world in only a few years. And as soon as they adopted capitalism they became irrelevant.
