Labor accused of fuelling a 'whole new housing crisis'

Video Overview & Insights

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer says Labor’s tax hikes will result in a housing market slump.

Yes, let's keep housing prices high and try to make them go even higher because everyone can afford a million dollar house, right? If all you're buying a home for is an investment I have no sympathy for you if you lose money on it because you're part of the affordability problem of homes nowadays.

— @thegreek4006

“You’re reducing the incentive to invest in housing so you’re seeing a decline in investment,” Mr Downer told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“So, if there’s less investment in housing, then house prices will start to fall … you’ll get fewer houses built.

WHY can't we have politicians that serve the people...
Id GLADLY agree to the finance minister getting 5.mill or the PM a year if EVERYTHING was done for Australia 1st , lobbying was banned and they weren't allowed another job after leaving office.
Ie. No avenues for selling us out or excuses for getting it wrong.

— @ronburgandy1475

“Gradually over time, they’re creating a whole new housing crisis.”

Un Aust Liebour dont give a shit & never will. Taxpayer leeches for life.

Albanese Government is worst ever in power.
First homebuyers are at risk with negative equity to potentially with Albanese loose their asset.
Disgusting for those who are in already economic stress.

The council rates are supposed to be the costs of providing services. Therefore they should not be based on the property value - that is just embezzlement for the government. Cost of providing services for 10k residents in Brighton is no different to providing services for 10k residents in Dandenong. Same number of employees, IT, etc.

No one is accusing them, it’s what they did. It’s an observational fact that the Albo government is systematically working to destroy this country from the inside out. This is why politicians and their policies should be subject to criminal proceedings and ‘change of position’ should be assessed and approved by independent bodies, including oversight by other elected parties as to whether they are valid or election fraud, which is what most ‘change of positions’ are. There also needs to be criminal proceedings for gross misappropriation of public funds. It’s truly disgusting.

I’m struggling to understand the inconsistency in the arguments here.

For years, property investors argued that removing tax concessions wouldn’t affect housing affordability because they supposedly had little impact on prices. Now that changes have been made, we’re suddenly told it’s the end of the housing market. Which is it?

I also agree that immigration should be reduced, but basic economics suggests that lower population growth would also reduce demand for housing and put downward pressure on prices. That’s exactly the outcome many of the same commentators on Sky News claim to oppose.

The positions seem contradictory. You can’t argue that tax changes won’t affect prices, while also claiming those same changes will devastate the market, and then support policies that would also reduce housing demand. The logic just doesn’t add up.

Chris, you got no idea what you're talking about, house is for shelter, not to make hundreds of thousands of dollars on, you guys sicken me how you carry on. Pay for your own investment properties, not the taxpayers, start paying tax, like the rest of us, so SUCK IT UP, and get over it. Labour did the right thing.

We the big and biggest voter group will continue to support Labor. Labor will soon allow us to access our Super to buy a f roof over our head and cap ur m f greedy rent bastards. F retards unfair policies to use our money as a hedge for your own personal gain and make us work and rent forever. F off. We the youths won’t vote for any party at all who favor these unfair policies. Why the f do we need to pay more taxes without getting any benefits vs ones that r cashed up. wtf is this??? U can’t win because we will have an edge over any parties simply we make up the biggest voting group. Period.

It will also force rents to increase as there will be fewer homes available, plus the increase costs now of owning an investment property.

A former front bench cabinet member in John Howard's LNP led govt before retiring to land the cushiest diplomatic post in the foreign affairs dept being the Australian Ambassador in London. As Australia's longest continuously serving Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander (the colonial c#cksucker) Downer authorised the first of many not insignificant federal govt donations to the infamous quid pro quo extortion racket known as the Clinton (cash 4 political influence) Charity Fund which was later revealed in a US senate investigation hearing as a legally non compliant sham not for profit "Charity" front for laundering the millions of donations granted by sovereign foreign govt (such as those multiple "donations" made by the Australian federal parliament courtesy of Alexander Downer, then significantly escalated by the Rudd/Gillard Labor govt and continued furthermore by Julie Bishop, the FA Minister under the Abbott/Turnbull NLP govt era specifically for example, but back to Alexander Downer's dubious exploits whilst serving as the Australian ambassador in London, it was unveiled how he later crossed over to the dark side (informally acting as a spook for MI6 & informant for the corrupt Obama administration's justice department brazen/illegal attempt to spy on & smear Trump's 2016 election campaign with the dubious collaboration of various allied national intelligence departments of the "5 Eye" countries specifically, & Ambassador Alexander somehow got front & centre in this whole grubby scandal by meddling with nefarious intent in London by getting way out of his league & potentially undermining US - Australia diplomatic relations (especially fraught with political risk if DJTrump was to ultimately defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US presidential race) for the worse if his bad faith meddling & needless interferring in his diplomatic dealings with Trump campaign assistant, George Pappadopoulos. The "colonial c#cksucker" in this instance highlighted how Donald Horne's main premise of his critical/derisory historical commentary in his sarcastically titled book called "The Lucky Country" was lamentably spot on, that making the assertion that the Australian colonial experience from 1788 to later nationhood during the late 1800 & 1901 Federation of states & territories that would subsequently serve as a unified force for the British Empire in various global theatres of war followed with the post WW2 period to the present time being notably a prosperous consolidation of the nations abundant mining & agricultural resources enjoying decades of boomtime but notwithstanding this "luck", Horne contended persuasively that Australia has essentially been a remote colonial backwash of the British Empire and has consequently been lumbered with a nepotistic executive ruling class that has f
rendered it vulnerably fraught to the perils of bad moments in history which thankfully have been few in terms of good fortune & providence that abundantly flows but the born to rule son of a South Australian conservative politician who attended exclusive English boarding school in preparation for his birthright in the national Liberal Party machine to later briefly lead same before exiting to become Australia's longest serving Foreign Affairs federal minister then a role no less prestigious as Australia's Ambassador to the British Empire based in London but notwithstanding all this apparent grooming & actual hands on "diplomatic" experience at the highest level quite evidently amounted to naught for Alexander Downer's capacity for monumental incompetence & as Horne emphasises, Australia has by and large been administered by an incompetent crew of knuckleheads that far from being stocked with meritoriously appointments of the best & brightest within the British Empire, good fortune has consistently saved Australia's bacon well beyond anything that resembles a fair return for sake of good management!!

This is intentional. the government will then have the excuse that the only option is to have foreign investors & Superannuation giants to build housing.
Like the UK did.
This is negligence, its deceitful campaign, that will financially benefit Labor’s benefactors.

Labor know exactly what they are doing. Burning the country to the ground or driving it into a ditch at warp speed. Immigration is important when 90% migrants vote labor.

What a crock of shit. Houses are too expensive - Govt has caused a housing crisis. House prices are falling -- Govt is causing another crisis.

@AP-bm8ic

We need to replace CGT and stamp duty with an annual land value tax. This would make it easier to transact houses and encourages people to make productive use of the land they own.

Reduced confidence centred around housing is likely to flow through to the economy more broadly..... hold on tight, it may get messy.

@davidrenton3120

Exactly, Jim Chalmers has not studied any Economics with his budget, he has no understanding that when Demand vs Supply equals to housing crisis, equals more homelessness when rents skyrocketed, equals to social unrest when supply is not meeting with demand. What this treasurer did is the most obvious bringing Australia to negative GDP, higher interest rates, higher inflation, investors invest abroad and not Australia, housing crisis continues with more migrants and low supply plus no investors, first home borrowers goes into default on loans with higher and higher interest rates.. Jim Chalmers is a wealth destroyer and poverty maker of all Australians.

It’s been a runaway freight train for the last couple of decades but admittedly throwing bricks under the wheels is a sht idea but what can you expect from the quality of intellect running the government.. and the crazy thing is that it’s so simple to fix it but when you are working so hard your make it harder for yourself well you are going to end up with a total mess that someone with actual real intelligence and integrity is going to have to clean up. That day can’t come soon enough.

Good ridens to the elite property investors. Have it too good since the 1990's. Why should they keep their privileges and renters out of the market 😮
